Railcard want to talk to you about their Family & Friends Railcard, plus find out about what makes a great day out for you and your family.

Railcard say “We’re offering you the chance to treat your family to a fun-filled theatre trip for 4. What’s more, you’ll also win a Family & Friends Railcard and free rail travel, to help you save money on all your future family adventures.

If you win, your Family & Friends Railcard (worth £30) means you can enjoy 1/3 off most adult fares and 60% off kids’ fares throughout Great Britain for a whole year. So whatever outings you’ve got planned, your Railcard can get you there for less. It really is win-win.

But that’s not all! Thanks to our pals at ‘Theatre Tokens’, you’ll also have £250 to spend at one of over 240 theatres nationwide, including London’s West End. And Railcard will cover the cost of everyone’s return rail travel too.”

Everyone who posts their answer to the multiple-choice question below and tells us what makes a great family day out will be entered into the prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win £250 worth of Theatre Tokens plus a Family & Friends Railcard.

The Family & Friends Railcard helps you save how much?

A) 1/3 off most adult fares across Great Britain
B) 60% off most kids fares across Great Britain

We love to spend time on the coast with our dog or going into town on the train to the theatre or museums

As far as my piston-head males are concerned, a train journey makes any outing a good one!

A trip to the zoo or a local farm park is a great day out for us.

Tbh we use the train for longer journeys: visits to family and friends. It's much more relaxing and makes the journey part of the adventure.

But the great family day out:

  1. not going very FAR, so more time spent at destination
  2. bring food
  3. everyone be up for an adventure.

Anywhere you can relax and laugh together, share food, and smile, forgetting the stresses of 'normal' daily life

C - save on both
The ideal day for us would be plenty to keep the kids occupied, stress-free travel (ie most likely train), no queues (and if possible, dry sunny weather!)

Micah68 · 17/03/2015 22:02

C) Both of the above.

I prefer train journeys to the car as we can chat more when I don't have to focus on driving.

A family fun day out for us could be anything from a trip to the local park or farm, going to the zoo, visiting a National Trust site or seeing friends / family.
The main point is getting to spend quality time together, whatever the weather, wherever we are.
There is often a focus around food (!) - whether that be a homemade picnic, meal out or quick fix treat from a sandwich / burger bar!
And of course the day involves lots of fun & laughter - and a camera to catch the happy memories! Smile

We tend to go for days out to London, visiting the museums and seeing the sights or shopping, or we go the other way and go to the New Forest and have a day of walking around with a nice country pub meal to break the day.

A great day out involves everyone enjoying themselves and one where we talk about it years later. Having fun is part of it. It also needs to be as stress free as possible which for me involves planning ahead.

We love a good day out on the train as it takes the worry of parking away... Not to mention remembering where you have parked!

It's nice that we can have a cheeky glass of wine with lunch or dinner as well and not have to worry about being over the limit.

The only gripe that I have about travelling with children by train is the toilets. Oh my. Always an eye opener.

Otherwise it's a great way to get around. I highly recommend it!

Great days out are usually by train as we don't have a car. This can be somewhat stressful with 2 very young children so a day involving straightforward journeys and no delays is a bonus. We enjoy trips to the seaside, nice open spaces and fab food

I always think the best days out for us are days when we plan carefully to get the most out of the day, especially if it is an expensive destination. I haven't used the train for many years and I'm not that keen on driving so we tend to go by bus. I always feel that the train seems a lot of hassle/ confusion with the different types of tickets available. When my older children were small I used the train a lot because I had no car and relatives lived a fair distance away, but I've got out of the habit now. Reading this thread has reminded me how much I used to enjoy that sort of journey with the kids, there was always something to look at and talk about out of the window.

You can't beat a day out in London: something cultural in the morning (tour round the bbc last time), followed by a nice lunch and a wander round a Royal park in the afternoon. perfect.

We like day trips to the seaside it's so much easier on the train as parking is difficult and expensive. We enjoy the travelling and quality time together. Eldest daughter going on a horse riding camp by train this summer - she is as excited about going solo (no parents) on the train as she is about having a week with ponies!!

taz10 · 18/03/2015 00:51

C)Both of the above... for us as a family its got to be the beach some looking in the rock pools and then buried dad in the sand .

A great day out is anything that we all enjoy. And one that hasn't been over planned. My boys and I particularly enjoy getting the train into London and then seeing where the mood takes us once we are there :)

We like to go off somewhere for the day with our dog, bizarrely she hates travelling in the car, it makes her very anxious and turns the journey into a nightmare for us, but by train she's very happy, so we love using the train for day trips

sandgrown · 18/03/2015 07:12

Answer c . You save on both. Our great day out is just having an adventure to a city or seaside . The train journey is part of this! Things to do that appeal to all ages . A sunny day and a lovely picnic. Smile

A great day out has something for everyone, both parents and children, and either new experiences for all or seeing something anew through the eyes of a child. An ice-cream's always good too!

Living in London means we have great train links and are lucky enough to live near a train station. I love days out by train because all the family can chat and catch up on the train, whereas in the car we are all facing forward and tend to just listen to the radio. Its so easy to go both into the centre of London or out of London into the country or to the seaside.
