The team at Hobbycraft would like to find out the arts and crafts activities you will be doing with your DCs this February half term holiday.

Here’s what Hobbycraft say, “As parents ourselves we know what a challenge it can be to keep the kids entertained away for the TV so for the sake of mum’s everywhere who are in need of inspiration we’d love to know what is your favourite crafting activity to do with the kids?”

The February half term is a tough one on most parents with the weather often keeping children cooped up inside. So what theme will your February half term holiday take? Will you be baking hot goodies to stave off the dreary weather? Will you re-create the outdoors inside by making an indoor den and scenery from recycling? Whatever it is, we want to hear it!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where three lucky Mumsnetters will win a £100 Hobbycraft gift card.

Thanks and good luck!

ButterflyOfFreedom · 13/02/2015 09:22

If the weather is good (dry at least) there will be trips to the park / farm / zoo.
Though I'm guessing we'll have to spend some time inside in which case activities will likely include:
baking cup cakes
painting / colouring / drawing
play doh
Duplo
stickers
jigsaws
reading

DS is only 2 but is getting creative and enjoys anything involving glue, paints and/or plasticine!

upthehammers · 13/02/2015 11:26

we'll be doing a combination of making cakes, biscuits and bread.

craft wise we've got some easter things to be made (pom pom bunnies and chicks, egg nests etc as well as some things for mothers day (not just for me but for my sister as I look after her children during holidays)
We've also got painting planned.. handprints, footprints, dinosaur toy tracks and trains being driven through ...fun!

While sorting out a cupboard I came across a candle making set I had used years ago. What a great half term activity I'm thinking. We will need to go to Hobbycraft and replenish wax, wicks and colours and then the DCs can choose their own mould to use . I am keeping this activity as a surprise.

While in Hobbycraft I will stock up on paper, pens, pencils , paint, glitter and stickers. Fortunately my DCs LOVE drawing , painting and creating. We will also create things from my 'box' store. These boxes are those I have saved - toothpaste boxes, cereal boxes, anti -wrinkle cream boxes!, especially any box with an opening lid or an interesting cut out. It's amazing what little DCs can create from these. We have constructed an assortment of monsters and many creatively made vehicles in the past. Oh, that reminds me, I'll need to add glue and split pins ( split pins are essential to attach wheels and monster moving parts) to my Hobbycraft shopping list. Can't wait , I'm feeling really creative just writing about it.

Have a happy creative half term everyone.

crafting and baking

MishMoshi · 13/02/2015 12:36

My daughter still has craft sets from Christmas that she hasn't used. Rainy Day plans could involve a set of plaster of paris animal moulds to set & paint, also there is a sequin art set that she has begun but is yet to complete and she loves to draw and colour in so no doubt there will be lots of that going on.

pixelwife · 13/02/2015 13:18

We're baking some cupcakes and making papier mache masks!

Pimientos100 · 13/02/2015 14:08

We will be trying to do as many outdoor activities as the weather will permit. We have also promised my little girl that she can do some indoor camping. We intend yo pitch the little 2 man tent in her room and decorate it.
We are planning in making paper lanterns, streamers and other crafty decs. Can't wait!

lynniep · 13/02/2015 16:34

probably making bags. I make bags as a hobby and the boys always want to have a go. DS1(8) is allowed to use the sewing machine as long as I hover over him. DS2 uses a needle and thread as he is 5. He also likes to make dresses for dollies so he might do that.

stealthsquiggle · 13/02/2015 16:41

I have been ignoring this thread thinking that as a bad neglectful mother I don't have anything at all planned for my DC over half term (and, in my defence, any time I ask them what they want to do I get "nothing" and " stay at home")

However, when I cam to think about it, I do (hooray!) have the week off, and we will do some stuff. It's Chinese NY and I have ordered some lantern kits from Baker Ross which DD(8) in particular will love. The DC will be involved in planning and cooking that meal and decorating the dining room. We will also do a lot more cooking together (or them planning and cooking with supervision) than we have time for during term, and maybe some baking. I also have a curtain to make, which I know DD wants to help with, and we may, possibly, do some more sewing together once we have started, and I may take a deep breath and let DS(12) loose on the sewing machine - and/or dig out my old sewing machine and get it serviced and fitted with a needle guard so that they can both use it without me getting all possessive over my precious baby... Blush

DoingIt · 13/02/2015 17:42

We will plough through the various craft kits DD got for her birthday / Christmas. Paint a figure, make hairbands, make bouncy balls

CathBookworm · 13/02/2015 19:58

Me and my eldest are doing a lot of things with paper at the moment-trying our hand at origami (harder than it looks!) and making 'I Love You' cards for daddy.

Smooshface · 13/02/2015 20:35

Went to hobbycraft today, was tempted by the paracord bracelet set! At 5 dd is too young though! Got her her own smash book pen, will try and finish Disneyland scrapbook, we bought plain one to take with us for autographs and now she is sticking photos next to the relevant autographs!

madsmam · 13/02/2015 21:35

DD1, age 11, has homework of a crafty nature; we she will be building a castle. I have been diving into bins at work collecting appropriate bits of cardboard.

Session 1 will be using a glue gun safely!

MrsRolandRat · 13/02/2015 22:42

Off to the Caribbean with work Shock df is home with daddy so baking, soft play and Pizza Hut I expect.

Princessxo · 14/02/2015 00:06

We'll be painting! DS loves to paint and he literally paints all the time!

polster1 · 14/02/2015 07:04

Pancakes savoury and sweet for Shrove Tuesday. Creating a large painted canvas for their dads birthday.

greeneggsandjam · 14/02/2015 08:08

Making pancakes (must go and buy some chocolate spread) and brownies.

Getting the sewing machine out and try and make some new cushion covers to replace the older worn ones.

Making a birthday card and using the letter stamps inside.

Thinking of some ideas for the Spring display in the living room. I like to make a display around the fireplace for each new season so who knows what it will be, but will no doubt involve lots of green and yellow!

Stoodles · 14/02/2015 08:40

Off to Scotland to learn to ski!

We are massive Geocaching fans here once you have bought the app for £6 you don't have to ever pay anything else. Its like one big adventure & it allows us to visit places we have never been too.

Last year we went on a 3 mile walk through fields & woods & found 6 geocaches. Such fun!

Tangerineandturquoise · 14/02/2015 10:14

We will be painting, using clay and lego- there will be drawing trips to a museum and a day at kids camp.

fuzzpig · 14/02/2015 13:25

Not sure if we will get round to it this week but my DCs (home educated as of, erm, today!) want to learn about ancient Egypt, so we might do stuff like making a mummy/canopic jars (although dreading the mess of papier mache!).

DD has a cabin bed with a desk and underneath it has a sort of crawl space. I figured we could decorate it according to what they're learning about, so we will be putting up hieroglyphics etc so it looks like the inside of a pyramid/tomb. Should just be paper needed for that at least.

Also DS wants to make a car, I figured we would try and do an elastic band pull-back type one if I can google it figure out how.

Daariina · 14/02/2015 14:34

We'll be visiting museums as DS is a massive fan (and so am I).
