The team at Hobbycraft would like to find out the arts and crafts activities you will be doing with your DCs this February half term holiday.

Here’s what Hobbycraft say, “As parents ourselves we know what a challenge it can be to keep the kids entertained away for the TV so for the sake of mum’s everywhere who are in need of inspiration we’d love to know what is your favourite crafting activity to do with the kids?”

The February half term is a tough one on most parents with the weather often keeping children cooped up inside. So what theme will your February half term holiday take? Will you be baking hot goodies to stave off the dreary weather? Will you re-create the outdoors inside by making an indoor den and scenery from recycling? Whatever it is, we want to hear it!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where three lucky Mumsnetters will win a £100 Hobbycraft gift card.

Thanks and good luck!

Our half term in Scotland was 3 days and ended yesterday. My DS's and doggie unfortunately were were unwell and we did not get up to much.

freefan · 12/02/2015 19:01

I have already bought in some tie-dying kits and some white t-shirts, also a sock puppet making kit, these along with getting out to the park should make for a happy half term :)

dragon60 · 12/02/2015 19:19

lots, visits to the park, out on the bikes and scooter, no doubt glueing, glittering, painting and a few science experiements from our book

RunningKatie · 12/02/2015 19:22

We are going to bake cookies one day - I've got some new chef's hats and aprons for the dc's. They will love them Smile

DD also got a paint your own trinket box set for her birthday so we are going to do that.

Also, the dreaded playdoh will be coming out as my youngest dc loves it. We have some new sparkly stuff so by the end of the week there will be playdoh everywhere!

stephme191 · 12/02/2015 19:24

we have been baking and will be going swimming tomorrow aswell. Other than that the usual colouring in and making various objects out of cardboard boxes!

starlight36 · 12/02/2015 19:36

We are going to make some wrapping paper for Daddy's birthday. We decorated brown paper with drawings and glitter which both children enjoyed and DH loved last year.

My daughter also wants to do lots of baking and we have a few craft sets (Treasure box and toy shops) received from Father Christmas which have been saved for the week.

beckyinman · 12/02/2015 19:37

Going to see the polar bear at Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Marg2k8 · 12/02/2015 20:09

My children are older now, so I don't have to plan half term activities. When they were younger, we used to do lots of craft activities, such as leaf painting, making playdough, collages etc.

Gardening which includes making a fairy garden. We have some wildflower meadow seeds so they are planning to use those in their fairy gardens. We are going to make masks out of foam from an art supply shop, their list is batman & robin, all the turtles, Spider-man & spider girl, a ballerina and a super villain (?!). They love drawing so will probably do lots of that, and we will take the chalks outside and draw on the driveway, hopscotch anyone?

As we live in Scotland, February half term is now over! (Two days only and one in service day here, first day back today). So what did we do? Baked muffins (good for when there is only an apple, some oil and store cupboard ingredients left in the house!). DS spent some time making thank you cards for the presents he got at his birthday party; he painted a seascape with some poster paints and card stock and we then added octonauts stickers and cut the card up into smaller cards, writing on the back.
We also made a game of 'fling the octopus' by stuffing cotton wool into the end of old odd socks for the head, tying an elastic band around it to keep it in, cutting the remaining heel and ankle into 8 to make the tentacles and sticking on felt eyes. These made great soft toys for aiming into a bucket in the hall. two rainy afternoons covered there! Finally we made sun catchers using card stock and the sweet wrappers from the christmas chocolates tub. Sticking the wrappers over holes cut in the card and then hanging in a window allows the sun to shine through and make rainbow colours on the opposite wall. My DD loves them. Love a craft day.

I've only a couple days off, but we'll do some Geocaching, Orienteering, baking and arts & crafts

capercaillie · 12/02/2015 20:34

Half-term will see my DD indulge her passion for 24hour junk modelling. This has been fed by her Reception class so she has even more ideas than usual. I get little say in this! She told me this morning that she's going to make a cafe. My job is furniture shifting and chief purchaser of all the bits she needs. I already know that biscuit baking is planned. I'm also hoping to divert some of her energy outside by putting a fairy door in a tree - they've just done this in reception too and she'll happily write letters to the fairies and give me a few minutes peace! After 7 days of 24hr craft, I shall pack her off back to school and clear up the creative mess. I'm astounded by her creativity but it's exhausting. Hobbycraft is her favourite shop - I wish I bought shares in it!

baking cakes, visiting park, board games

littleme96 · 12/02/2015 20:47

We will be baking goodies to eat for snacks and as part of our lunches. The plan is also to make easter bonnets or hats.

I think we might also visit a local farm and then draw pictures of what we have seen when we get home.

katys10 · 12/02/2015 20:48

We will be making lots of pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. Plus loom bands are having a revival in my house. My 10 yr old daughter is gradually working her way through her Sequin Art, and my 8 yr old son has some woodwork sets he's looking forward to tackling.

shawbarbara · 12/02/2015 21:02

I'm hoping the weather keeps dry because we intend to go walking - so fed up being cooped in during the cold wet winter- so much to see and do

sealight123 · 12/02/2015 21:02

Well I'll be at work :(
My daughter will be at the childminders having a great time though :)

mave · 12/02/2015 21:24

We're going to the lake district, hired a cottage with friends and their kids so hopefully be able to spend lots of time outdoors in our wellies exploring the area!!

star1000 · 12/02/2015 21:26

I'm working for part of it, but the rest will be split between family days out to places like the Eden Project and days at home doing baking, art & craft and playing games.

Lindy2 · 12/02/2015 21:57

We've got a good supply of crafts including cardboard hearts (from Hobbycraft) to paint. I also got a pack of 30 heart gift tags. My 6 year old is busy writing messages on these. This is great handwriting practice as well as fun. Other things will be cooking together especially for pancake day and the Chinese new year and getting outside in the fresh air.

clareycat · 12/02/2015 22:06

As we are heading to the zoo on the first day of the half term is planned to do some animal themed crafts for our indoor days. We will be making animal costumes and 3D animals with my younger childeren. I think my older child will probably opt for a decopage giraffe though!

pfcpompeysarah · 12/02/2015 22:06

We are going to make shortbread and cupcakes, we are also going to go to have a snuggly day watching a film eating pizza while bundled under blankets at my sons request!!

katiecoodle1 · 12/02/2015 22:26

I'll be baking & creating - we do a lot of junk modelling (using up all the stuff from the recycling bin) and it keeps us busy on rainy days. We decoupage too - we have a ton of pretty creations here (perhaps too much, so I'll discourage that if they want to do that again!)

createbeauty · 13/02/2015 08:09

I'll be going to the park and running around with my son.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 13/02/2015 08:11

We will probably bake some cakes and decorate them with hidious amounts of sprinkles and edible glitter.

Stick random items together and call it a robot, cover the floor in glitter and stick stickers everywhere they'll stick and on ourselves.
