The team at Hobbycraft would like to find out the arts and crafts activities you will be doing with your DCs this February half term holiday.

Here’s what Hobbycraft say, “As parents ourselves we know what a challenge it can be to keep the kids entertained away for the TV so for the sake of mum’s everywhere who are in need of inspiration we’d love to know what is your favourite crafting activity to do with the kids?”

The February half term is a tough one on most parents with the weather often keeping children cooped up inside. So what theme will your February half term holiday take? Will you be baking hot goodies to stave off the dreary weather? Will you re-create the outdoors inside by making an indoor den and scenery from recycling? Whatever it is, we want to hear it!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where three lucky Mumsnetters will win a £100 Hobbycraft gift card.

Thanks and good luck!

Lots of playdough, collage with glue and sticker collages.
Things that are quick to set up and clear away!

whothehellknows · 15/02/2015 15:14

We're doing pencil rubber stamping initial pictures for their bedrooms, and we might try some fleece fringe cushions (the kind where you cut fringes into two squares of fleece and then tie each part of the fringe together instead of sewing). Apart from that I'll try to shift them outdoors at some point.

Lots of baking and crafty activities

SaphireSaf · 15/02/2015 19:01

I will be doing a lot of reading. People may find that boriing, but we love reading as a family. Picnics are also part of the plan.

deanhead1 · 15/02/2015 20:12

i will be working but my hubby will be taking them on days out and keeping them happy and busy

BunnyFint · 15/02/2015 20:56

We're going to the local petting farm/park/indoor play and have a few other days out planned, We've both been lucky enough to book annual leave so we could both be home for half term. We will also be doing lots of crafty things, ds1 is making his own chunky handled cutlery with some Fimo and dd loves drawing/painting. Play dough is always a winner in our house.

Purplehonesty · 15/02/2015 21:16

I am going to be doing button art with my two dc aged 2 & 5.
I've got a giant tin of buttons from my gran and can't wait to start glueing!
Thought the 5yo could make his name from buttons and I will frame is for him room and the 2yo I wil draw her a picture for her to fill in. Probably a heart as that's what she always wants to draw!

We will be baking as well, usually make cupcakes and let them decorate using my kit. I'm a baker/cake decorator so they love to get stuck into my supplies. And I try not to cringe too much!

queenoftheschoolrun · 15/02/2015 21:28

We're going to do some baking - pancakes of course, chocolate orange muffins and a chocolate birthday cake for my Mum. Also painting as DD has just spent some of her Christmas money on a new paint set. And, if there's time, I thought we might try making pictures using applique, there are lots of lovely ideas on Pinterest.

We'll be popping into Hobbycraft mid week to pick up some Easter craft sets. We visit a friend whose DD is older and they love doing crafts together. It's become a half term tradition!

imip · 15/02/2015 21:33

We will be making soap! We are going to start making some to accompany birthday presents for parties my dc have been invited to. We're putting toy scorpions in transparent soap for a 7yo boy, and I the kids want to make bugle gum ball soap.

Dcs need to junk model a story scene for homework - haven't thought about that one yet, but I am very happy that I own a glue gun :-)

We've had our half term already.

I wasn't well so we haven't done much. Kids had a day with their grandparents, another day just chilling in the house and then quite a few days mainly spent outside tbh. There were about 20 kids out in our tiny street day and it was lovely - chalk drawings on the pavement, playing tig, football, scooters, roller skating etc.

If I'd been better we would have went for a day out somewhere like a hands on museum (kids are 8 and 4), definitely done some baking because we do that all the time and maybe tried paper mâché. Never mind.

Shaler · 15/02/2015 22:50

Half term will involve scrapbooking and doing lots of crafty projects with DD (7) - she has tons of them we haven't got around to making yet as we buy far too many!

I will also be playing Duplo, cars, trains and play doh with DS (3) as well as doing stickers and jigsaws. DD will probably join in with lots of these! :D

We will go out to the park with the kids' scooters, visit friends and go along to a half term event at DS's old playgroup. There will be lots of reading, colouring and drawing and the three of us will be baking cup cakes.

I also hope to potty train DS who (unlike his sister who potty trained before she was 2) hasn't got the hang of it yet! :(

I am beginning to think we need more than a week! :D

Orlita123 · 15/02/2015 23:29

I hope to make some hand and foot imprints in clay for my DCs memory box.

comebacksun · 16/02/2015 07:36

We're going to make sock puppets, visit a museum, have a playdate and go shopping for a friend's birthday present. If we get a sunny day, we'll go bike riding in the park.
I'm also going to teach dd how to do glass painting, which used to be my hobby! She's very excited.

WheresMeBrew · 16/02/2015 11:45

In our house, there is "something" to do every day. Today we are playing out and planting seeds. Tomorrow, we're getting the train into Manchester to go to the museum. Wednesday is baking day, Thursday is painting day, Friday is go to Sainsbugs and pick a DVD each out of the bargain bin and have a film day. In between these activities, the kids play with their toys, do homework, play on the iPad, basically anything they fancy (within reason). As long as they know the main task of the day, they're happy!

Quills · 16/02/2015 13:34

Today we did a science experiment, putting white carnations in coloured water to see what happens to the flowers. Our big project for the week is making a map of the solar system to put on DD1's bedroom wall.

maddy68 · 16/02/2015 14:59

Glass painting :)

vallinnapod · 16/02/2015 15:26

Anything involving a pritt stick! My 3.5 year old just loves sticking and cutting. He is getting more accurate so cutting pictures out of magazines to make scenes is a favourite.

He loves anything with glitter too...me, not so much...

mumsbe · 16/02/2015 16:44

We are knitting hearts, experimenting with pancake recipes and fillings, t shirt designing(just buy cheap white t-shirts and fabric pens keeps the kids happy for hours), making dream catchers and wind chimes, going to a frozen sing along, making a scrap book and having a lego competition.

JulesJules · 16/02/2015 17:32

Cooking - we will be making pancakes tomorrow with some, er, creative fillings Grin
We have already made brownies and decorated them with hearts for Valentines day.

I knitted a heart for Valentines and DD1 wants to learn how to knit one, she's also got a knit-a-penguin kit.
We are planning on making pompoms for the Woolly Hugs yarn bomb contribution.
DD2 is writing poems about dragons and illustrating them with metallic gel pens.

whomovedmychocolate · 16/02/2015 17:50

I will be trying to fight the urge to run into the garden and scream while they attempt to play Terraria without me noticing.

Seriously, we've done some cooking, girl child is doing beading and boy child is doing advanced nose picking.

Boobyandthebeads67 · 16/02/2015 18:57

I've booked my children (9 & 5) into a local craft activity for 1 afternoon. The 9yr old has just been given a loom band kit but we've both struggled with that today Confused so left it until we can figure it out - maybe we should take a class in it, lol. Other than that it will be a visit to grandparent's and mostly them role playing / playing with Lego or watching films.

mummybare · 16/02/2015 19:28

Today DD (2.9yo) had a play with some play doh and did some drawing (a treasure map, apparently) and sticking (of stickers). She enjoyed making a Valentine's card for DH the other day, which involved pva glue and tissue paper, so I might get that out again.

We have one of Hobbycraft's papier-mâché masks and bits to decorate it with (paint, sequins, feathers etc.) so I might do that with her too.

Although reading some of other people's replies I'm thinking Chinese New Year would be a good theme so I might have to do something to do with that...

She loves crafts and I'm a fan too, as long as there's not toooo much glitter involved Grin
