After the success of Breaking Bad, Watch With Mumsnet is back with Better Call Saul, a brand new Original series from Netflix.

In this dark comedic prequel to the Emmy-winning Breaking Bad, we meet ambitious small-time lawyer Jimmy McGill six years before he becomes Walter White’s morally challenged attorney, Saul Goodman. We follow as Jimmy (played by Bob Odenkirk) transforms from an optimistic underdog struggling to make ends meet into the notorious legal legend who puts the criminal in 'criminal lawyer'.

With one episode being released on Netflix each week we’d like you to visit the thread at different points throughout the season and let us know your thoughts on what’s going on. We’ll be updating the thread with new topics of discussion surrounding each week’s episode. Episodes will be release every Tuesday only on Netflix. Everyone who joins the discussion will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will win a Toshiba 40” Full HD Freeview HD Smart LED TV* and 6 month Netflix subscription, a further 5 Mumsnetters will win a Better Call Saul goodybag.

Note on spoilers: We want to hear your thoughts on everything, from plot twists to season finales and more - but if you’re talking anything that could reveal important plot details then please put Spoiler at the beginning of your post to warn others who may not have seen it.

Happy watching,
MNHQ

I'd love to join but I need to watch Breaking Bad before I start this series!

Ellisisland · 07/03/2015 10:22

Am on episode 4 of this and loving it so far. Am really liking how they are mixing in bits of his BB characteristics with his background.

Ellisisland · 07/03/2015 18:31

Ok am now on episode 6 so all caught up !

Wanted to add to my earlier post a couple of points

  • you definitely would have had to have watched BB to fully get this show. I think it is good enough to stand on its own but a lot refers to BB so would be missed by someone who hasn't watched that.
  • some of the flashbacks to his earlier 'loser' life I am not sure how far back they are supposed to be ? I'm guessing a few years as he has been to law school since
  • the relationship between him and Chuck is really interesting and I infer how that will play out as Chuck isn't in BB (or maybe we just never saw him?)
  • love how the humour is still there. That was one of the great things about BB - the dark humour and I'm glad it's in BCS as well
Middleoftheroad · 07/03/2015 19:05

I am enjoying this and the nods to BB. I love the humour too. I keep trying to predict how it will go, how he will team up with Mike, how he becomes Saul and what will happen with Chuck. I loved the scene with the old lady and the ornaments in ep6! You find that you are rooting for this underdog - like walt white in the early days. That the bad luck that follows two clever, educated men working beneath their stations, will pass. Both Saul and WW become drawn to criminality and I think there are some interesting parallels. Will Chuck's health cause Saul to become desperate just as WW's illness was a catalyst? How will it play out? That keeps me going. Great to see Mike and Tuco - I wonder if we'll meet Saul's other associates soon. Remember his burly bodyguard - can't recall his name or when he came into BB but looking forward to seeing more!

GatoradeMeBitch · 07/03/2015 21:48

SPOILER!!! Did Saul actually need to go into hiding? WW died, the Neo-Nazi's died, pretty much everyone had died except for Jessie and I expect he just wanted to get away from all of that, not chase after the few remaining faces left, so did Saul actually have anyone to hide from in the end?

MyLIfeAsASeriesOfStatusUpdates · 08/03/2015 05:23

Love it! Very slick and something to fill the gaping hole in my heart that Breaking Bad left x

debofost · 09/03/2015 09:12

Looks like it could be fun, i think we miss out on so much alternative Tv, because is tend to stick to main 3 Tv channels. I have heard good reports on Netflix, wondered if they do a free trial?

LittleMissRayofHope · 09/03/2015 11:44

This weekly release is killing me!! I tried saving them up to binge watch but couldn't! #weakwilled

maismommy · 09/03/2015 13:26

We loved breaking bad. Infact we are watching the whole thing again on Netflix atm. We watched the first episode of better call Saul but we were disappointed. Maybe we were just expecting it to be like BB. It was very slow and didn't grab me. But then again I was trying to settle my son who is teething. Maybe I will watch it again now I have some peace and quiet

WonderWomanwasmyheroine · 09/03/2015 14:47

Love it - have held of until there were a few episodes up but then watched them all in two days! Now waiting for the next one to be released... The flying around to different time periods gradually building up the layers of Jimmy's back story is really engaging and although I was sceptical that it couldn't like up to Breaking Bad it's doing well so far.

Loved Breaking Bad, so couldn't wait to see this! It's great. The only problem is, because you know the character so well, you can see some of the plot twists and scams coming. Shame as Breaking Bad had me guessing till the end.

CapnMurica · 10/03/2015 13:19

I'm really enjoying Better Call Saul - watched the latest episode before work this morning! I like all the back stories and the way the characters seem like old friends.

DowntownFunk · 10/03/2015 13:26

Hooray, it is Better Call Saul day today.

I need to wait until this evening though.

Ellisisland · 10/03/2015 17:28

Watched the new episode and it's just getting better and better. I think one thing this show is doing really well is showing us the history and different sides to characters we already know without diminishing their characters from BB. Hard to explain what I mean without spoilers but am really enjoying this show. Just wish I could watch the whole series in one go!

sealight123 · 11/03/2015 09:27

I've not started yet! I'm watching my first one tonight then I'll be back when I'm all caught up lol :P

ProfYaffle · 11/03/2015 09:28

Great episode last night, love Mike and was pleased to see his character developed.

4nnabella · 11/03/2015 16:23

possible mini spoiler here for anyone who's not watched ...

Agree with most previous posters - we're loving this series. Still got to watch last night's episide but will catch up tonight. Loving the links to BB and seeing other characters develop too alongside Jimmy. Also didn't the 'Saul Goodman/It's All Good Man' reference the whole way through BB until he said it like that in episode where him and his mate found the 'drunk guy' on the floor in the alley can't remember which episode that was

exmrs · 11/03/2015 17:29

Why did mike want the notebook? To see what the police had on him?

I thought saul/Jimmy was going to spill the coffee by accident and Mike took it it he could be trusted I didn't think saul was going to do it deliberate .

DowntownFunk · 11/03/2015 19:55

I think Mike wanted the notebook to find out who had told the police his son was dirty. The show after the point he visited his DIL was all flashback.

FreudiansSlipper · 11/03/2015 23:23

I am loving this show it is so good

this weeks episode is brilliant

PTAblues · 12/03/2015 11:37

I think we are loving this more than BB here in the PTA house. Probably because the characters are much more sympathetic. I always thought Walter White was a dick. The last episode with Mike was fantastic. Really great TV. When he was talking about his son not being a dirty cop it was heartbreaking. I was really upset the episode was over.

Ellisisland · 12/03/2015 13:25

PTA the characters are much more likeable. I agree about this weeks episode too. Seemed to go so fast!

Really hope there is a second series of this

4nnabella · 12/03/2015 15:13

Ellis they confirmed there'd be a second season before this one even started... Grin

Ellisisland · 12/03/2015 15:39

Oh good! Grin
