After the success of Breaking Bad, Watch With Mumsnet is back with Better Call Saul, a brand new Original series from Netflix.

In this dark comedic prequel to the Emmy-winning Breaking Bad, we meet ambitious small-time lawyer Jimmy McGill six years before he becomes Walter White’s morally challenged attorney, Saul Goodman. We follow as Jimmy (played by Bob Odenkirk) transforms from an optimistic underdog struggling to make ends meet into the notorious legal legend who puts the criminal in 'criminal lawyer'.

With one episode being released on Netflix each week we’d like you to visit the thread at different points throughout the season and let us know your thoughts on what’s going on. We’ll be updating the thread with new topics of discussion surrounding each week’s episode. Episodes will be release every Tuesday only on Netflix. Everyone who joins the discussion will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will win a Toshiba 40” Full HD Freeview HD Smart LED TV* and 6 month Netflix subscription, a further 5 Mumsnetters will win a Better Call Saul goodybag.

Note on spoilers: We want to hear your thoughts on everything, from plot twists to season finales and more - but if you’re talking anything that could reveal important plot details then please put Spoiler at the beginning of your post to warn others who may not have seen it.

Happy watching,
MNHQ

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER! No, you see them give each other a sneaky thumbs up after the 'rescue'. Saul set the whole thing up, including the interview, for the publicity and a way to get back at Hamlin!

Bumbiscuits · 25/02/2015 17:16

No accident, set up to get the billboard advert on the front page of the paper and on all the news bulletins. Crafty Saul.

Didn't ever notice before that "Saul Goodman" really means "it's all good, man", doh.

I'm definitely going to rewatch BB...the reruns of that will keep me going between BCS fixes Grin

MarshaBrady · 25/02/2015 17:18

Very, very good. They do that long arc of character development as well as they did for Walt in BB.

And Saul is so much more interesting with it, than he was in BB.

GatoradeMeBitch · 25/02/2015 18:20

I tried that Biscuits - but managed to binge watch the whole lot within a fortnight, so I'm back to square one!

(Oddly though, I didn't like Mike as much on second viewing, and I had more respect for Gus. I hope if Better Call Saul does really well that they might consider a Gus spin-off too!)

Daariina · 25/02/2015 21:41

I haven't watched Breaking Bad yet, but I'm absolutely loving it. I love Saul!

exmrs · 26/02/2015 01:08

Absolutely loving this series.
When I heard they were doing this I thought oh no it will be a cheesy programme with Saul and his crazy clients which are unbelievable and no back stories and you could watch any episode in any order and the premise would be the same but I'm so wrong. It delivers.

ChoochiWoo · 26/02/2015 05:51

Oh i must have missed that ...i like the CD but i do hope something more happens next week.

HellonHeels · 26/02/2015 08:50

I'm only just watching season 2 of Breaking Bad. Wondering where a good point is to start watching Better call Saul. I don't want to spoil BB which I'm really enjoying.

GoatsHaveStrangeEyes · 26/02/2015 16:00

After much insistence from DH we have started watching this now.

DH is really enjoying it and a few of his work colleagues have commented saying it is better than breaking bad but I think I will wait for it to develop a little more before I make my mind up.

Watched episode 4 last night and I did like that Saul Goodman is for "it's all good man".

lionheart · 26/02/2015 19:57

Clever stuff.

Thisisanoutrage · 26/02/2015 20:31

Brilliant. You can never guess where each episode is going to take you. The scenarios are all completely unlikely but when you know the characters, you really start to believe it.

It so far feels a bit ligher than Breaking Bad, which is good as sometimes an episode of Breaking Bad was quite exhausting.

GatoradeMeBitch · 26/02/2015 20:41

HellonHeels If I were you I'd finish with BB first, then watch BCS. There is a spoiler in the first episode, and also little (and big) nods to BB that you will only fully appreciate if you've watched it.

GatoradeMeBitch · 26/02/2015 20:55

BB SPOILERS!!

I reckon BCS will get pretty dark too - something will have to happen to make Saul go from being a fairly well intentioned person, to suggesting that Walter prevent the possibility of Badger snitching by having him stabbed to death in the food line at prison!

mumsbe · 27/02/2015 09:26

Just watched episode 4 loved the message after was confused with the black and white start in episode 1 was confused about who chuck was but all has been revealed. I like the way jimmy is starting to build a tougher character now and becoming who he was in bb.

Spoiler.

Really enjoyed the rescue sceen making jimmy a hero..not sure why he wants to keep it from chuck

Lolly12 · 27/02/2015 09:35

Really enjoying BCS so far. It's not quite up there with BB in my opinion but early days. A couple of observations:

  1. The endings to each episode have been a bit odd, and I have felt they end quite abruptly (particularly the most recent one).
  2. I can't look at 'Saul' without thinking of Robson Green.
PeachyParisian · 27/02/2015 10:27

Best bit so far was the bit pre-flashback! It's a bit harder to follow than BB but it's good in a different way. Not entirely what I was expecting ( not very lighthearted).

Not too sure why it's one episode per week rather than all at once as with most Netflix series. Unless it's to prevent people from signing up for a free trial and binging?

HellonHeels · 27/02/2015 15:05

Thanks Gatorade

ktlq · 27/02/2015 17:00

I'm loving seeing Saul back on our tellies. Or James. It was always going to be hard to follow BB but I think the writers have done a great job so far to pull a story out of nothing. He is such a charismatic character. Love seeing New Mexico back on our screens too. Bright blue skies and wide open space can't be a bad thing in February in Britain, right?

SaphireSaf · 27/02/2015 18:44

As someone who doesn't actually watch much TV, it takes a lot to actually please me. BB was great, and so far although I quite like BCS, it's not upto par with BB and I don't think it will be. That said, I will continue watching.

MagicMojito · 28/02/2015 21:43

Loving the program now I have watched a few episodes together. Personally, i really dislike the waiting a week in between instalments so I'll probably wait a few weeks until I sit down to watch it again. Good program though, definitely.

( This is from somebody who absolutely could not get into BB)

MsRyanGosling · 01/03/2015 11:39

mumsbe I thought the reason he wanted to keep it from Chuck was because he tells him the phones ringing off the hook with clients due to hard work and dedication finding clients rather than down to a publicity stunt. He wants him to think of hm as a hard working grafter. I think ?

EmmaShawcross · 01/03/2015 15:06

A nice slow build up, just like BreakingBad and look what happened there. I'm so thrilled to see some charators back, I loved Mike. Keep them coming :)

DrEllieSattler · 02/03/2015 10:22

I had a binge!!! (Contented sigh!)

Yay for Mike! Yay for Tuco (that was a real surprise!)

I love the beginning. It had a real poetic justice about it when Saul said at the end of BB that the best he could hope for was to be a manager of a Tim Horton somewhere. Made me smile!

Bad, bad Netflix for releasing it one measly episode at a time. Especially on a Tuesday since I then have to wait two full days for DP to get home so we can watch it together. Ratbags.

Still, it is brilliant though. Looking forward to finding out how Mike gets involved with him. I'd also like to see Gus get involved at some point. That would be awesome.
