Nurofen for Children have asked us to find out what makes Mumsnetters and their DCs feel better when they’re feeling under the weather during the winter months.

Here’s what Nurofen says, “Both adults and children may experience a sniffle or two this winter, but the whole family wants to feel their best to make the most of the festive season. From Halloween to Christmas, there are plenty of family occasions to enjoy during the colder months and being holed up in the house is no fun for anybody. If you or your children are struck down with cold or flu, Nurofen offers a range of products to help manage both adult and child symptoms including fever, sore throats, headaches and minor body aches.”

So, what do you do to help yourself and your DCs feel better when you are (both) down with a winter bug? Do you tuck yourself under multiple covers on the couch and put on a marathon of your favourite TV show? Perhaps you have a special recipe which you reserve for when you’re feeling under the weather which you find keeps you going? Or maybe a hot bath does the trick for you and your DC? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it.

Everyone who leaves their comments below will be entered into a prize draw to win a £250 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

A hot toddy for me and a lemon and honey for the kids. Snuggling under the duvet watching trash telly.

lottietiger · 11/11/2014 21:45

Something rubbish on the TV with a blanket and a cup of hot orange squash normally makes me feel better. Follow that with a hot bath and an early night.

Shakey1500 · 11/11/2014 21:51

My Golden rules for a recovery

Bed, clean bedding, clean pj's, comfy pillows
Tissues to hand
Constant water/juice
Four hourly paracetamol
Homes under the Hammer/Location x3 on the bedroom tv
Dozing when needed
Sausage, mash and gravy

Foolproof Grin

Tzibeleh · 11/11/2014 22:14

A hottie on my feet and ointment for my nose. Plus what Shakey said.

DishwasherDogs · 11/11/2014 23:11

When the children are ill I keep them drinking, bring their duvets and pillows downstairs and let them wallow in front of the tv.

When I'm ill what would make me feel better than any OTC drug, potion or lotion ever could, would be for someone to take my dc somewhere safe for a couple of weeks days so I can sleep and have peace and quiet. There's nothing worse than being ill and having to carry on as normal, even with regular doses of medicine keeping you going.

CointreauVersial · 11/11/2014 23:20

A mug of Hot Lemon & Honey, drag the duvet downstairs, and snuggle on the sofa watching junk daytime TV.

Actually, I am very rarely ill, so that actually sounds like quite a tempting way to spend a day. Grin

For DD, who is 2.6 - correct dose of Calpol. Lots of cuddles, whatever she wants to eat, & make sure she drinks enough. TV time if she wants, & plenty of naps if she needs it.

For me - a warm shower, make sure I take the correct dose of paracetamol if required. Drink of hot blackcurrant, honey & lemon. Lots of oranges & anything else with vitamin C in - peppers etc. Comfort food for dinner, so for me that's lentil bolognaise with rice. Nice tissues and a small bottle of chapped skin oil for my nose, made up as per the instructions in Valerie Ann Worwood's 'Fragrant Pharmacy' book. Blanket of the sofa, given half a chance, a good film & my knitting.

Or, failing all else, just the nose oil, paracetamol & an early night.

A very stiff whisky mac always makes me feel a bit more a if life is worth living when I have a cold!

DuelingFanjo · 12/11/2014 00:33

A tray, a cup, a ful, jug of milk and a whole teapot of tea just for me all plonked onto a thick flowery duvet in front of a good old fashioned film like 'the women' (original version). This works for DS too if you replace the black and white move with puss in boots and the pot of tea with warm milk In a yellow cup.

threepiecesuite · 12/11/2014 09:23

For me, it's a hot bath with a few drops of eucalyptus oil, a big fluffy towel, clean PJs and straight to bed.
4yo DD is under the weather at the moment. For her, it's cuddles on the sofa, a hot water bottle and a bit of Vicks on a tissue at the end of her bed.

ImGoingForATwix · 12/11/2014 10:15

Mugs of hot drinks, cozy comfortable clothes and lying on the sofa (once DS is in bed)

MonicaFree · 12/11/2014 10:46

For DC, if they're unwell I construct them a bed of cushions and duvets in the kitchen. I can get on and chat to them and it's easier to clean up after them than the bedroom. I also think it shows them I'm taking them seriously and making a big Get Well fuss, even if I'm just pottering quietly nearby.

If I'm ill I like Heinz cream of tomato soup and clean bedding.

FPATEL · 12/11/2014 14:03

To sit in my pyjamas in bed with the heating on

monkeyplastic · 12/11/2014 14:43

Lucozade in a glass bottle, and watching films on the sofa, wrapped in my duvet...

elizaco · 12/11/2014 14:52

It's all about home comforts - fire lit, lying on the sofa, wrapped in a favourite blanket; lots of drinks, hot soup and good TV.

Grumpyoldblonde · 12/11/2014 15:14

A hot shower, clean Jim-Jams, Nurofen painkillers, fake fur blanket on the sofa and a bit of rubbishy TV, followed by an early night with the radio on. Lots and lots of hot tea and a hot water bottle.
To eat, maybe a take away curry to help sweat it out and the best comfort of all Hot milk & Whiskey before bed.

Smartleatherbag · 12/11/2014 15:16

Paracetamol, hot drinks, sleep, trashy TV and sympathy. And the special sick blanket. For me, kids not around is good!!
Got a mild cold this week and would like my blanket!

supergreenuk · 12/11/2014 16:20

We always have nurofen in. It lasts longer than other brands and seems to work really well.

It has to be sofa, onsie, TV or sleep and someone to get me what ever I need. Piece and quiet would be nice but with children it just doesn't happen.

thanksamillion · 12/11/2014 19:14

Hot Ribena for sure. I always make sure there's some in the house if I'm starting to feel a bit off. The DCs aren't allowed it though - it's all for me Blush

Babycarmen · 12/11/2014 19:33

Hot water with ginger, lemon and honey, a hot water bottle, and snuggled up in a duvet on the sofa with a film. Perfect!

mummybean84 · 12/11/2014 19:46

when my little one is poorly its cuddles on the sofa a DVD and her favourite monkey Marvin to cuddle up to. For me its good old ministroni soup!

Malkofish · 12/11/2014 20:05

Spaghetti hoops on toast for tea and some cheesy 80s film on the telly usually sorts me out.

laurentperrier · 12/11/2014 20:13

Lots of sleep and fluids . lying on the sofa watching disney films while dp panders to my ever need. And when I'm starting to feel better a hot bath with clean pyjamas and fresh bedding is the best thing ever!

AndHarry · 12/11/2014 21:02

I rely on a raft of Peppa Pig DVDs to get me through the day dozing on the sofa while the DC stay vaguely restful. I also feel much better after a shower and Lemsip capsules.

Purpleflamingos · 12/11/2014 21:04

Whiskey and films for adults, paracetomol, water, and comfort foods for dc. The best comfort food is steak mince in a cottage pie, a layer of carrot mash, a layer of grated cheese, a layer of sweet potato mash, a layer of grated cheese, a final layer of sweet potato mash.

If all else fails, cuddles, chocolate, water, dvd's, medicine and early nights.

Obviously, knowing the difference between under the weather and ill enough to see a doctor and have antibiotics helps (I may have underestimated how ill the dc and myself have been on occasions).
