Nurofen for Children have asked us to find out what makes Mumsnetters and their DCs feel better when they’re feeling under the weather during the winter months.

Here’s what Nurofen says, “Both adults and children may experience a sniffle or two this winter, but the whole family wants to feel their best to make the most of the festive season. From Halloween to Christmas, there are plenty of family occasions to enjoy during the colder months and being holed up in the house is no fun for anybody. If you or your children are struck down with cold or flu, Nurofen offers a range of products to help manage both adult and child symptoms including fever, sore throats, headaches and minor body aches.”

So, what do you do to help yourself and your DCs feel better when you are (both) down with a winter bug? Do you tuck yourself under multiple covers on the couch and put on a marathon of your favourite TV show? Perhaps you have a special recipe which you reserve for when you’re feeling under the weather which you find keeps you going? Or maybe a hot bath does the trick for you and your DC? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it.

Everyone who leaves their comments below will be entered into a prize draw to win a £250 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

Chicken and garlic soup
A real fire

A hot Lemsip does the trick for me and a nice warm bath

CheeseEMouse · 12/11/2014 22:34

A long soak in the bath, an early night and a hot water bottle for me. For my daughter medicine, cuddles and the tv to distract her

TsukuruTazaki · 13/11/2014 01:27

I am just now recovering from a bad cold, sore throat and general achyness

The things that helped were regular hot drinks, staying curled up in bed with my kindle or iPad, taking it easy and allowing myself to lie in

katyandjof · 13/11/2014 02:56

Day on the sofa in pyjamas n warm milk with honey.

Sunny2013 · 13/11/2014 09:49

What makes me feel better when i have a winter bug ???

Top if the list is making my grandmothers recipe for her homemade chicken soup, sadly she is no longer here top make it for me ... but when I take her handwritten cook book out of the cupboard , despite having a blocked nose , I can close my eyes and smell the book that still smells of her drawers all these years later :-) :-) :-) that in it's self make me feel better ... and her Chicken soup would cure the world .....

I also love to crawl into a nice clean bed in warm fluffy jammies and two scorching hot water bottles .. one for my feet and one for my tummy. I draw the curtains and sleep it off .....

Coffeechick · 13/11/2014 10:11

Usually I have a blanket wrapped around me downstairs on the duvet and I make myself a hot honey drink( hot water with a spoonful of honey mixed in) if I have a itchy throat

Coffeechick · 13/11/2014 10:12
  • on the sofa
awfulomission · 13/11/2014 10:15

Me, kids, dog on the sofa, fire going and Heinz Cream of Tomato soup.

Or if it's really bad, bed, Olbas Oil and R4 or a talking book. And lots of paracet/ibuprof, obvs.

StainlessSteelCat · 13/11/2014 10:34

Similar strategies for me and kids! When really suffering/running a temperature, alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen to bring it down and stay in bed. I usually listen to R4, then kids don't get that option yet. once recovering, the sofa and the TV for the ill, other DC to leave them (or me) in peace.

I really crave peace when I'm ill. Once I'm on the mend, a long hot shower and something home cooked to eat.

seasalt · 13/11/2014 11:32

Hot whiskey, Vicks and moaning about how awful I feel while lounging on the sofa!

MissHJ · 13/11/2014 11:38

Both me and my 14 month old are currently Ill with chest infections. On antibiotics but we have a lot of juice, easy foods at hand, quilt, hot water bottles and Mr tumble on TV. Both been sleeping a lot and when I am awake and my son is asleep I like watching chick flicks, watched sex and the city movie yesterday. Maid in Manhatten today.

heyday · 13/11/2014 12:44

Curling up under the duvet feeling all safe and rather sorry for myself. Lots of hot orange, lemon and honey drinks, watching tons of rubbish tv I between sleeping and hoping to goodness that if my DC is unwell too that he sleeps and sleeps and sleeps it off.

GiantGaspingSatanicCyst · 13/11/2014 12:47

For me, a day (or two) on the sofa with pyjamas, duvet and gentle television. Heinz Cream of Tomato is also a must - takes me straight back to being looked after by my mum when I was ill as a child :)

None of this works, however, without someone else sorting out all the childcare! A day on the sofa has no curative powers if you have to get up halfway through for the school run. So I very rarely get one anymore :( It's a good job I'm not ill much.

For the kids, just lots of cosseting really - blanket, sofa, calpol if necessary, televisual entertainment they can fall asleep in front of, lots of cuddles and no demands.

Cherryjellybean · 13/11/2014 16:49

For me it's heating on, relaxing, with blankets and at the moment I have a sore throat and ice Lollys are helping :)
My daughter loves cuddles with daddy, biscuits, cal pol and cbeebies :)

Summergarden · 13/11/2014 17:06

maryandbuzz1 · 13/11/2014 17:56

I always have a hot drink and put myself to bed. That usually does the trick.

andywedge · 13/11/2014 17:57

A good sleep, followed by a bath, followed by a bowl of porridge and a cup of tea
