Nurofen for Children have asked us to find out what makes Mumsnetters and their DCs feel better when they’re feeling under the weather during the winter months.

Here’s what Nurofen says, “Both adults and children may experience a sniffle or two this winter, but the whole family wants to feel their best to make the most of the festive season. From Halloween to Christmas, there are plenty of family occasions to enjoy during the colder months and being holed up in the house is no fun for anybody. If you or your children are struck down with cold or flu, Nurofen offers a range of products to help manage both adult and child symptoms including fever, sore throats, headaches and minor body aches.”

So, what do you do to help yourself and your DCs feel better when you are (both) down with a winter bug? Do you tuck yourself under multiple covers on the couch and put on a marathon of your favourite TV show? Perhaps you have a special recipe which you reserve for when you’re feeling under the weather which you find keeps you going? Or maybe a hot bath does the trick for you and your DC? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it.

Everyone who leaves their comments below will be entered into a prize draw to win a £250 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

Has to be the classic snuggle up. Sofa, blanket, cosy slippers and hot water bottle. Someone to snuggle up to also helps :)
A good film and a hot drink too.

Pasta with at least 4 cloves of fresh garlic in the sauce.

purplepowers · 11/11/2014 12:49

For me it's definitely chicken soup with plenty of garlic. I also like a hot toddy made from hot water, a dash of brandy (purely for medicinal reasons of course) lemon juice, cinnamon and a squeeze of honey (a popular recipe I see!) The DCs have the same without the alcohol.

Hot water bottle helps, snuggly blankets and PJs. I also find eating satusumas and oranges help - which must be the Vitamin C. I'm also a fan of Vicks melted in hot water too and inhaling it. Oh and DH to do all the housework.

del2929 · 11/11/2014 12:51

having hubby to look after me and take care of the little ones.

Cambam2010 · 11/11/2014 13:10

If myself and my DS 4 are both ill then we like to snuggle up under our special blanket and sip tomato soup with cheese on toast. We will watch loads of animated films or lose ourselves in books.

If I am fortunate enough to be ill whilst my DS is with his dad then I just refuse point blank to move from the bed unless it is absolutely necessary to get chocolate and tea

wavesandsmiles · 11/11/2014 13:29

Single mum here so being under the weather is a real challenge with 3 DCs to sort out. Fortunately, DD (9) is a wonderful wannabe nurse and loves to bring me marmite on toast and helping me "choose" films to watch whilst I enjoy baby cuddles from DS2 (and DS1 loves the fact that I'm not up and about to chase him off Minecraft)

Mostly it's the cuddles with DCs that help Smile

InAndOfMyself · 11/11/2014 14:01

Big woolly socks, many blankets over my lap and legs, feet up with many pillows at my back, and a mug of warm soup. That is what makes me feel better.

marmitebear · 11/11/2014 14:22

My parents always used to make a hot toddy for me and I make them now for my daughter too. Hot water, slices of lemon, orange and apple then heaps of honey.

mumsbe · 11/11/2014 15:11

What makes me feel better is snuggling under the duvet with a cup of thick veg soup watching a good film followed by a nice cup of hot chocolate

JS06 · 11/11/2014 15:23

For me, some peace and quiet usually does the trick, some decent pain relief, a hot bubbly bath, clean pjs and bedding and an early night. (think I'm describing my utopia!)

For the children I'm keen to help distract them from being poorly and will give some pain relief if necessary, plenty warm clothing, lots of fluids and food they fancy and then a gentle walk or some garden fun followed by a relaxed evening and early night with plenty of reassurance and tissues at the ready.

Moogdroog · 11/11/2014 16:38

Definitely time to get cosy! Hot Bath, warm pj's, cushions and blankets on the sofa with lots of movies. Ooh and soup for lunch. Basically, lots of snuggly stuff and indulgence!

Greatgoogleymoogleys · 11/11/2014 16:48

We drink Robinsons, crave orange juice and sleep lots and lots.

Neffi · 11/11/2014 16:59

Blankets on the sofa in front of a film and a big bowl of tomato soup.

WheelbarrowWoman · 11/11/2014 17:12

Hot honey and lemon
Grated apple
Buttered toast

For DS, day-long snuggles and naps on the sofa with a pile of picture books and CBEEBIES.

telsa · 11/11/2014 17:15

definitely warm blankets, sofa, a film, warm spiced apple juice and lots of soup.

Maddaddam · 11/11/2014 18:08

Snuggling up under a duvet.
Hot lemon, honey and perhaps whiskey.
Wholemeal toast and marmite.
Nurofen is good too.

WarmHugs · 11/11/2014 19:01

For me - peace and quiet, Horlicks and the iPad

The DC - duvet day on the sofa, cuddles off me and whatever treats they ask for in their sick voice.

choccyp1g · 11/11/2014 19:17

Hot Ribena with a locket melted into it.

BearsDontDigOnDancing · 11/11/2014 19:25

Chicken soup as my Mom always gave me that when ill. Other than that, snuggling on the sofa with my duvet, thick socks one of DH hoodies and lots of tea.

For the children, lots of cuddles, duvet on the sofa and many teddies.

SaltySeaBird · 11/11/2014 20:18

Chocolate, a hot drink, blanket on the sofa and husband cooking me dinner.

I'm feeling really rotten tonight so three out of four isn't bad ... it is just the chocolate I'm missing!

leanneth · 11/11/2014 20:39

I always start with a shower to steam up the bathroom a bit then fill up the bath and have a long soak, sometimes so long that I have to top the bath up with hot water!

I do the same thing with own children, we have a shower and a bath to relax and get clean. I usually give them some medicine before we get in so that it has taken effect by the time we get out! The bath is a great distraction!

popmoc · 11/11/2014 20:41

A clove of garlic swallowed.

michelleblane · 11/11/2014 21:16

Like others, a warm bath and lovely clean sheets are a good start. Medication and mugs of tea. Chopped tomato with salt and black pepper (that is one from childhood!) The knowledge that DH is keeping the home running smoothly!

AngelDog · 11/11/2014 21:20

Cider vinegar & honey to drink, castor oil to rub on a chest if we're coughing and a pile of blankets in the corner of the kitchen. Wet socks at bedtime to bring down a fever safely.
