Sorry, posted too soon. Tilted bed or mattress and I swear by my cool mist humidifier in the baby's room when she has a cold.

Tyranasaurus · 04/10/2014 17:45

Breastfeeding- I'm sure the antibodies helped shorten the cold and the combination of warm drink and having to breathe through their nose seemed to help clear things out a bit.

Sophia08 · 05/10/2014 12:31

Lots of patience!

Emrob86 · 05/10/2014 19:20

Turn your bathroom or shower into a steam room and sit in there with your child for a bit to loosen up blocked airways.

Wabbit1 · 06/10/2014 10:34

I found a contraption called a baby nose vac! My friends laugh but I literally vacuum out the snot from my twin girls' noses and hey presto! Ready for bed! Yes it is weird - maybe I'm weird! But it does work long enough to fall asleep. I couple this with the usual Vicks, tilted bed and steam etc. But sucking out the snot helps immensely and its grossly fascinating seeing what comes out of there Grin

I breastfeed my son and when he got blocked nose I put drops of breast milk in each nostril, it worked miracles.I should add not always breastmilk in nose was enough for my son to feel comfortable that's why we used baby nose clear aspirator from Boots, which in my mind was must to have buy as it really worked.

katieskatie1982 · 06/10/2014 21:16

vicks vapour rub on a cloth above cot or a plug in vapour releaser. Vasaline on their nose to stop it drying out and going sore!

Itiswell · 06/10/2014 23:24

I've tried saline solution and breastmilk but i'm not sure about their effectiveness. It's horrible hearing your DC struggling with a blocked nose. In desperation i've tried a nose aspirator but it didn't quite meet my expectations. So, i've sometimes used cotton buds REALLY CAREFULLY to remove blocking sizeable bogies that are near the entrace. :-)

Kandboys · 07/10/2014 11:39

Steam is a good one for clearing noses. Fill a bath and sit your baby with you in the bathroom

pipersky · 07/10/2014 13:19

Vicks on the chest and the soles of the feet - I don't know why or how this works but it does. Sadly I only tried it with baby 3 when I was at the end of my tether so I suffered through many snotty noses before discovering this handy tip :)

DifferentNow · 07/10/2014 13:37

Wipe a sore nose with a soft cotton bib rather than a baby wipe or tissue (better for the environment too!).

TopsysMum · 07/10/2014 14:53

Propping the cot up at one end. DS2 had bronchiolitis/pneumonia at 10 weeks and this worked wonders :-)

GinetteandWill · 07/10/2014 19:34

Saline drops to help clear the nose, then a rolled up towel under the mattress to raise the head and shoulders and help keep nose clear at nighttime.

crimsonwitch · 07/10/2014 20:52

When they had a sniffle or a cold as babies, I would give them a nice warm bath as the steam would help to loosen anything blocking the nose. I also swore by saline nasal drops followed by using one of those suction devices to suck out any snot, cover them in a vapour rub suitable for their age group, and slightly prop up the cot mattress so they aren't sleeping completely flat.

cather · 07/10/2014 21:17

A bowl of water in their room, keep the radiator turned down. I use a warm flannel to get rid of dried snot and put vaseline under their nose to stop it from getting sore. I also cut an onion in half and put it on a plate well out of reach, daft as it sounds it really does help to loosen up a stuffy nose as it is a natural decongestant

sweir1 · 07/10/2014 23:41

Send them to their grandparents for the weekend. Failing that then you can't go wrong with vicks on their feet.

xvxvxvxvxvxvxvxv · 08/10/2014 15:30

When I have a cold it's hard to eat and often have a sore throat so serve up soups and yogurt and a few ice creams and frozen bananas to keep my snuffly one year old from being hungry and soothe her throat.

Doubtfuldaphne · 08/10/2014 16:12

steam really helps and there have been a few times i've sat with my dd in the bathroom with the shower on. It does help loosen things up. Also lots of comforting things like chicken soup and keeping wrapped up nice and cosy always helps!

DaddyThunder · 08/10/2014 16:47

We actually used the Cussons snuffly baby bath which did work (for a little while at least) A nosefrida is the only thing that really helped ours as it was mainly the nose blockages which woke him up.

Elevating his head in bed also worked wonders (one end of the cot elevated) in keeping him snot free for longer.

Cherryjellybean · 08/10/2014 16:54

Oblas oil in the room, a nice steamy bath and I don't have a snot sucker so I just pick or wipe any accessible bit off with a muslin. Then do everything possible not to spread it to the rest of the family.

4yoniD · 08/10/2014 17:32

For me it has to be a humidifier. I have checked and have a good/average humidity level in my house, but despite this having a humidifier on is the difference between my kids sleeping and not sleeping when they have a cold or cough, which is a HUGE difference!

Kangakate · 08/10/2014 19:30

I use a little vaseline around their nose and also if I'm having a hot bath or shower I have them in the bathroom with me, so the steam can help them breath

emmav6 · 08/10/2014 21:07

a steamy room for some relief before bedtime

Bringmewineandcake · 08/10/2014 23:21

Olbas oil for children sprinkled liberally on her cot bed at night! Soft tissues and calpol during the day.

honeyharris · 08/10/2014 23:51

Saline drops are usually enough to soften the bogies and get them moving down, so you can catch the edge of them with a tissue to remove them.
