steam from the bath always helps, and I put some olbas oil on a tissue in their bedroom and put a rolled blanket under the mattress to raise their head up slightly, and definitely lots and lots of soft tissues.

ilovemovies · 29/09/2014 16:52

A long bath to help the steam work, and then a baby wipe to get the snot out

Ritakd · 29/09/2014 18:03

Put a little bit of vaseline around their nose to stop it becoming sore.

hannonle · 29/09/2014 18:46

vaseline to stop sore noses, sudocrem to relieve if it does get sore. Steam/lavender to unclog, and some fresh air every day to blow away the germs.

cagsd · 29/09/2014 19:22

Couple of drops of Karvol or Olbas oil on a hankie or tissue, and put it in the cot near the baby (no need to put it too close to them, the smell is strong and the vapours will reach them!)

annarack99 · 29/09/2014 19:45

Olbas Oil and steam

Maclairey · 29/09/2014 20:16

Olbas oil on a muslin under bed sheet or pillowcase. Snuffle babe on the chest and a nice warm bath before bed.

snowymum12 · 29/09/2014 20:39

3 drops of baby olbas oil in a jug of hot water placed under the cot and or a wet flannel over the radiator. My little one's snuffles are instantly relieved and we sleep really well too.

Most effective tips for colds that I have used (after discovering them on forums like this!) are as follows..

  1. Get the bathroom nice & steamy before their bathtime - putting a few drops of Olbas oil into a bowl of hot water on windowsill (or anywhere out of baby's reach) & letting this circulate with the steam.
  2. Calpol plug-in is brilliant - smells absolutely yummy & really seems to help little one.
  3. Raising mattress slightly so head is elevated.
  4. A few drops of Olbas on a muslin tucked into pillowcase.
  5. Before bed - rub snufflebabe/vapor rub onto soles of feet, put socks over this & put little one to bed in socks. I don't know why but this really does work! :)

Saline drops are great, and a little bit of olbas oil (the baby kind) somewhere in the room always worked a treat.

graceyyxx · 29/09/2014 21:07

Lots of steam always helps along with calpol, vicks and olbas!

ChaffinchOfMegalolz · 29/09/2014 22:16

I've just had ds3 after a longish gap; and I totally forgot about the snotty baby thing, it's relatively common after birth

Leiajulie · 30/09/2014 01:50

boiling the kettle

GoldfishSpy · 30/09/2014 05:17

Warm flannel and saline drops alternately.

Moogdroog · 30/09/2014 10:18

We had a snot Hoover thing, bought in the throws of PFBness. DS hated it. I usually found that some karvol or similar plus a good wipe did the trick!

CrackedNipplesSuchFun · 30/09/2014 11:03

When my ds is snotty, both when he was a bany and now at 3.4 I have a hot shower running, with the plug in the bath and lots of albus oil. All windows shut. I always find it makes a huge difference (and as a sinus sufferer it always made my nasal passages nicer too!).

Also I have menthol crystals, which I use when my sinuses flair up. However, I put some In a bowl with hot water, leave in LOs bedroom whilst they have their evening bath. When you go back in its full of vapour which again I found help loads.

daylight · 30/09/2014 11:26

I also put Vaporub on the soles of their feet and put them to sleep with socks on

mamato3luvleys · 30/09/2014 11:50

Whenever my children have been snotty or bunged up I would give the usual nurofen/ cal pol and when I lay them in the cot put sum boiling kettle water in a bowl with a spoonful of Vicks let it all dissole and put it under the cot. Of course out of reach! Make sure y don't use your best Pyrex bowl tho as it's a bugger to clean the next day when the waters cooled down. Also some olbas oil on a bib hung round one of the cot bars and a warm flannel the next morning to remove any hard snot that comes away in the night.

twinklenic · 30/09/2014 12:57

vaporub is a life saver and baby olbas oil. i swear by that !!

MaryWestmacott · 30/09/2014 17:51

a bit of olbas oil on a damp teatowel on the radiator often helps. That and a steamy bath.

VictoriaSt · 30/09/2014 19:10

vicks vaporub is magic :D

jandoc · 30/09/2014 21:39

I haven't learnt a good trick yet

PotatoPolly · 30/09/2014 23:21

Using a muslin and Vaseline for little sore noses, and def Vicks on feet!

Jenni2legs · 01/10/2014 10:22

I found if my daughter was really bunged up it would help her to be sat up, or have her head elevated. We used to roll a tea towel up and wedge it under her mattress and let her have her evening nap in her bouncy chair.

This and lots of steamy baths.
