Having a shower with the windows closed so the steam helped the congestion. Wiping his nose with water so it didn't get sore. Snuffle babe on his chest and back and also a few menthol crystals in hot water under his cot.

We also put a pillow under his mattress to raise him up a bit so he wasn't so flat which helped with draining the mucus away to aid his sleep.

Muslin cloths! Take one everywhere. Never be stuck without a tissue again :D They are a lifesaver for a snotty baby.

being from the country - I was always told to rub some butter into the bridge of the babys nose. It loosened the catarrh and it always seemed to work with my children

AalyaSecura · 01/10/2014 16:53

Didn't do this when they were tiny, but from about 5 months when desperate for sleep at night, I'd bring their pushchair into our bedroom, and have them sleep a bit upright in that. I have fond Hmm memories of lying in bed with my arm out pushing the pushchair back and forth.

Aside from the tips already mentioned - snufflebabe, Vaseline on nose, steam, etc, the best thing you can do is wear snot coloured clothes for the duration. That way when you have to dash to tesco for Calpol and emergency chocolate (for you!), people won't think you've been attacked by Slimer from Ghostbusters :)

FMJ1000 · 01/10/2014 20:41

Saline nasal spray. Do it in a steamy bathroom for better results. We also wipe noses with muslins instead if tissues. Doesn't seem to chafe as much.
Lots if cuddles :-)

BubblingBlancmange · 01/10/2014 21:12

Don't waste money on the snot-sucking devices - my 2 would never let me near them with it! Both DS's are snotty at the moment, they've gone to bed early with vapour rub on their chests and olbas oil on a tissue near their beds.

torajii42 · 01/10/2014 21:15

vaporub (the baby version for really young kids, Vicks for older kids) and spending time in a warm steamy bathroom with the shower running

letsgetreadytoramble · 01/10/2014 21:42

I steamed my little one like vegetables (as my sister used to say). Turned on shower to hottest setting, and hot bath tap on full, shut the door and uncorked the olbas oil, and settled myself onto the toilet seat.

One recent particularly horrendous cold led to my son (who is 2 and therefore still breathes through his nose most of the time) waking roughly every 3 seconds all through the long, long night - fall asleep, try to breath through nose, awake gasping for breath and crying... Repeat ad infinitum. Peppa pig featured heavily that night...

ChantelD93 · 01/10/2014 22:16

We found the vapour rub on the soles amazing as well as plenty of warm baths. Xx

finleypop · 02/10/2014 10:48

I use a plug in vapouriser with eucalyptus oil in the bedroom.

mishknight · 02/10/2014 11:44

bring baby into bathroom each time you have a shower or bath and the steam will help clear the snottiness

milliemoon · 02/10/2014 17:56

A nice warm bath and some vapour rub, and lots of cuddles!

MissRee · 02/10/2014 19:12

Vicks on the soles of feet inside baby grow worked wonders for my little one, asdid raising the head of her cot so she wasn't laying flat.

rachaelsit · 02/10/2014 21:16

My baby up to now finds it hilarious when I use the tip of a cotton wool bud (or my finger) in his nose. However, he hasn't has a bad cold yet so might not of this were the case. Interesting to read all the tips here!

mummyofcutetwo · 02/10/2014 21:28

Wiping his nose with only the softest of tissues, a dry baby wipe (johnsons extra protect seems the best) or a muslin square.

Kalpol on a tissue next to the bed.

Warm bath before bed.

A bit of vapo rub on his chest.

Aloe vera Vaseline under his nose.

Plenty of cuddles.

FrenchieMum2Be · 02/10/2014 22:16

My baby girl is just getting over her first cold , bless her!
I now have a small cold kit including saline spray, balsam tissues, baby Olbas oil and Vaporub and I basically went into a routine of a nice deep clean with the saline first thing in the morning and last thing at night, a few whiffs of olbas oil during the day and a generous rub of Vaporub on the chest and back in the evening. I also used bathtime (thanks to all the steam) to give her nose a good clearout (it's quite gross but necessary).
Finally I'd say a nice daily walk is really helpful, I think that fresh air is essential in the recovery as well as plenty of cuddles and fluids (breastmilk and/or water).

selloveday · 02/10/2014 22:53

Have to agree with Olbas oil and warm steamy baths to help clear the airways

Kem99 · 03/10/2014 09:15

A warm bath to help loosen the mucus in the nasal passages and this also helps your baby to relax as well. In fact it's great for all ages.

nerysw · 03/10/2014 11:33

Vicks on their backs at night and plenty of warm squash always helps.

Wjjkl · 03/10/2014 14:07

Bamboo cloths for wiping noses - like a flannel but softer, reusable & can pick them up cheaply too

marymouse · 03/10/2014 20:55

Put a couple of books under the legs of the cot to tilt the body downwards, that way the snot runs into their belly.
Wipe noses with muslin cloths and then rub on Vaseline to stop them getting sore.
Put a few drops of karvol on a muslin cloth and tie it to the cot, helps clear the nasal passages

CheeseEMouse · 03/10/2014 21:04

Nasal aspirators - revolting but effective. Also saline drops really help my daughter

PetiteRaleuse · 04/10/2014 12:32

Saline spray squirted up their noses before food and sleep. Snot sucker on little babies afterwards.
