Saline drops are great for unclogging stuffed up nostrils. So cheap and easy to drop in too. I use them on myself when I have a cold.

CMOTDibbler · 25/09/2014 15:56

Ds was a very snotty, coughing older baby (6m to 18m especially). We spent a lot of time playing in the bath together to maximise the time he'd spend in the steam. Being together in the water also meant it could be a lot deeper.

At night, I'd put a damp towel with karvol on it on the radiator to make the room more humid

wantacatplease · 25/09/2014 15:56

I use a muslin to wipe baby's nose as it is less harsh on skin. Also I rub a little vaseline on the nose to keep it moisturised.

Lots of time in the bath to have steam time, and olbas oil. Olbas oil is magic :)

GodPlayedByJamesMason · 25/09/2014 16:39

Dry baby wipes out (on a radiator for example) for wiping noses, much softer than tissue

MegMogandOwlToo · 25/09/2014 16:40

Nice warm baths seem to help with blocked noses and make baby feel more comfortable.

Calpols plug in was also really good for unblocking noses, and help us all get a good nights sleep!

Secondtimesally · 25/09/2014 16:42

Best way to get the gunk out is a very wet facecloth - the water draws the gunk out in one go.

missorinoco · 25/09/2014 17:04

Warm baths. Vicks vaporub on the pillow. Calpol if they are miserable. Every time I didn't give Calpol thinking it was just a cold I would get what they had, feel terrible and take Paracetamol.

missorinoco · 25/09/2014 17:04

And vaseline for under their noses to stop a sore.

LadySusanVernon · 25/09/2014 17:20

Just suck out the snot, unless you're squeamish.

plantsitter · 25/09/2014 17:59

At night, A vaporiser with a couple of drops of olbas oil in it and elevated head end of mattress helps loads.

RunByFruiting · 25/09/2014 18:05

Vaporub (magic cream as ds1 calls it) is the only nose unblocker we've ever used.

Also wiping noses with cloth and not tissues.

starlight36 · 25/09/2014 18:29

Vicks plug in do eucalyptus tablets which can be used for young babies and are not as strong smelling as the normal strength Vicks tablets.

Lots of cuddles also work wonders for snuffly babies although either use a muslin cloth or wear old clothes.

Keepcalmanddrinkwine · 25/09/2014 18:45

I put Olbas oil on a damp flannel and drape it on the radiator.

gasbird · 25/09/2014 18:56

One desperate night I sucked the snot out of my son's nose. Pretty gross. I have since stocked up on saline drops to avoid a repeat performance.
I've spent a few nights awake with sleeping baby upright on me when things are really bad with coughs or colds

Maiyakat · 25/09/2014 19:22

Vaseline under the nose, DD likes putting on even when she's not got a cold! Damp cloths for endless nose wiping...

MontysMum22 · 25/09/2014 19:27

When one of my daughters was a really tiny baby and had an awful cold we were advised to put salt water drops up her nose to make her sneeze and clear her passages to give her a bit of time to drink her bottle, it worked quite well. Also to help them breathe easier I always give them a bath in a warm steamy bathroom , I have also put a bowl of boiling hot water underneath the cot with some olbas oil in and made a tent with towels to help them breathe. Sleeping upright is the best bet for them if there breathing is wheezy. Which means they sleep cuddled up to you with their head on your shoulder, not much sleep for you but baby is happier.

AndHarry · 25/09/2014 19:40

Saline drops worked well for snotty baby DD. when she got really bunged up I used to put a few drops of Olbas Oil in a bowl of hot water and leave it in her room overnight.

Note to Cussons while I have your attention :o I used to buy a lot of the Mum & Me range. I even gave some to my SIL as a treat. It took her mentioning that her boys were suddenly getting very dry skin for me to make the link between my DD's eczema, my DS's dry skin and your products. SIL and I stopped using them and the dry skin disappeared very quickly for all 4 children. My DD still has scars on her legs from the eczema though :( I also used to buy the Mum & Me 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner for me, which was ace, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere for ages. Bring it back!

Toadsrevisited · 25/09/2014 19:53

I asked 8month old DS as he currently has a cold. He recommends relapsing to a newborn-esque night feeding schedule of around every two hours to keep his energy up. Grin

sharond101 · 25/09/2014 19:58

Bowl of water in babies bedroom to put moisture into the air, Calpol plug in, aspirator before bed, steamy bathroom and long bath.

QuietNinjaTardis · 25/09/2014 20:28

Arf at toadsrevisited. That's what dd recommends too! Also I use muslins as handkerchiefs as softer on the nose and snuffle babe is good too. Dd currently has a cold/cough and I could really do with someone inventing a cure, bless her she's really suffering.

KateOxford · 25/09/2014 21:14

I use saline drops and rub snuffle rub on my baby's chest and neck. I also put a couple of drops of olbas oil in a bowl of hot water near the window or a few drops of karvol on a tissue by her cot. We do also alternate calpol and Calprofen. We buy lots of mini packs of tissues and take them out everywhere.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 25/09/2014 21:22

Vaporub on the soles of their feet, plenty of paracetamol/ibuprofen, a soft cloth for wiping snotty faces and keep your little finger nail just long enough to retrieve big nostril-blocking bogies.

Rachscott · 25/09/2014 21:27

I found baby olbas oil a life saver and also like many other mum's Vaseline around their nose and mouth to stop it getting dry and sore.
