We've been asked by Ready brek to find out about MNers' best porridge based recipes and healthy breakfast creations

Ready brek says "Coinciding with the launch of Ready brek's 'easy sachets' collection, we'd love to hear about how MNers customise their porridge. In tasty Original and delicious Chocolate and Gingerbread flavours, and made only from finely milled oats, vitamins and minerals, this hot oat cereal delivers all the benefits of an adult porridge, but without the lumps. Easy to make in the microwave or with hot milk this kids' porridge gives your children a tasty warming start to the day. But the Ready brek oats can be used for so much more than just porridge. One look at the Ready brek and Weetabix website shows just how versatile these oats can be. From Ready brek breakfast muffins, to 'ginger-brek men', there's hundreds of ways you can make your cereal go further."

So, how do you customise your porridge or Ready brek? Maybe you add some bananas? Or do you prefer to add blueberries or raspberries? Perhaps honey is your usual addition? Whatever you add to your porridge, Ready brek would love to hear about how you keep breakfast time fun and healthy.

If you don't usually have porridge for breakfast, do you have any porridge based recipes? Perhaps you like to add porridge oats when you're baking cookies? Or maybe you'd rather use your porridge oats for flapjacks? Let Ready brek know what your favourite porridge based recipes are.

Every MNer who posts on this thread will go into a prize draw to win £250 from Ready brek and Weetabix.

Thanks,
MNHQ

I usually prefer my porridge with no additions...... but every now and then (when it's a cold winter weekend morning and I need perking up) I add sliced banana and Reece's peanut butter chips. My sister sends them over from the US and I always have a little store of them in the cupboard- lovely!

Funkyferret · 09/09/2014 12:47

I love it made with soy milk topped with a little honey, half a sliced banana and sometimes a sprinkle of cinnamon or ginger.

Jam. Then stir so it goes pink. Just like we did at school.

babblingsofbecks · 09/09/2014 13:23

DD (18m) and I have readybrek made with milk and raisins or sometimes blueberries or strawberries. DS likes it plain. I'm going to try apple and cinnamon though!

TheDietStartsTomorrow · 09/09/2014 13:26

I add chopped dates (they go deliciously gooey and lovely), a sprinkling of raisins, a heaped teaspoon of pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds, chopped apple, pinch of cinnamon and honey.

My DC love it and I serve it as a treat on weekend breakfasts.

We add blackberries (picked from the neighbourhood and frozen just to use for porridge during the winter!).

Use porridge oats to make crumble topping - amazing and awesome :-).

bonners1 · 09/09/2014 13:29

Brown sugar

My children and I did a little winter project after their Dad left to keep us busy and I was desperately trying to keep the shopping bill to a minimum.

I made a huge pan of porridge everyday and we decided to put in a different topping in our bowls everyday to see which we liked most.

We had a spreadsheet that the DS1 made and we made a list of things to add into our porridge (we called them super sprinklings) and then DS2 would draw a smiley or sad face depending on if we all liked that days extra.

We had,

Cinnamon
Dried fruit
Fresh fruit (apples and bananas)
My homemade Jam (Strawberry, Blackberry and Damson)
Lemon Curd
Chocolate Spread
Apple butter
Fruit coulis (raspberry)
Vanilla sugar
Dates and chopped apricots

It was a bit silly to make a 'thing' of it but we had a lot of fun and it kept the kids spirits up during a lot of upheaval and uncertainty.

feefeegabor · 09/09/2014 13:40

Honey - nothing else!

Jayteemum · 09/09/2014 13:40

In the summer very ripe raspberries are a treat. When it is dreich (married to a Scot) chopped nuts and a swirl of golden syrup. You don't need to eat until dinner!

freefan · 09/09/2014 13:41

A teaspoonful of syrup, absolutely delicious :)

JoJoY · 09/09/2014 14:03

A nice swirl of golden syrup makes my porridge very yummy!

glennamy · 09/09/2014 14:07

I add crushed nuts for me and jam for my daughter.

bluebump · 09/09/2014 14:12

I'm getting some great porridge ideas from this thread.

I had porridge this morning and was thinking about how to jazz it up a bit. Today I made it with almond milk and added some agave to sweeten it but I am going to read through the above ideas again for some more inspiration Smile

HalleLouja · 09/09/2014 14:18

I have mine with jam or honey. Sometimes even apple butter.

Also love to make anzac biscuits. They are yummy.
