Dd has started to crawl ( in a fashion - wormy squirm) across the room. Yesterday I had to pop upstairs for a moment and left her sitting playing with some toys. I came back and she was on her tummy facing the opposite direction, across the room at her toy box. She has now just crawled across the floor to get her hands on the remote control.

SHe also had her fist paddle in her paddling pool. It is her 1st birthday next month and we bought her the pool for that - figured we better get it early in case there it not too long to enjoy it. SHe looked so cute in her sunvest and hat splashing like mad....

thats lovely doormat, maybe you and jimjams are using the same brand yogurt Wink Petit Filous by any chance?

Jimjams · 23/07/2003 18:45

Funnily enough- yes- although not usually. usually we have the organic ones with tractors on them. He did it again tonight. Cracked it!

I never seem to have time to go on Mumsnet these days so am finding it hard to keep up with everyone.

Just a quick update on ds as some may be interested particularly jimjams as you followed the him pre-diagnosis. BTW great news on your ds1's progress

Well ds seems pretty much 'normal' these days but with autistic 'patches'. His speech has really come on and he's stopped echoing. I think pretty soon he may have caught up. Amazing considering he was hardly talking at all 4 months ago. As I said he just had his 4th birthday and this has been quite a landmark as he is almost toilet trained. Quite suddenly he started going into the bathroom himself and using the seat (with lots of banging of lids!) however he tends to often take all his clothes off. I can't get him to wear pants either so its just trousers on next to bare skin.

He still has obsessions and tantrums but I feel these may subside once he can handle dealing with change and how to cope with feeling upset. I've learned to avoid certain sitautions. (had a bit of a scary moment a few weeks back when I couldn't get him to sit in his car seat - it took two of us to pin him down). I am feeling really positive about the future. I was amazed that he even sat at the table and blew out the candles at his birthday party with 15 other children there.

Well I won't rabbit on. Just wanted to say thanks for your help especially to jimjams who helped me out in the 'early days' a few months back. By the way he's still to get a 'proper' assesment but that's not till October and also SALT (current waiting time is 45+ weeks!) but probably won't need this.

Getting a tad worried about dd who is not talking at 15 months except 'mama' and also her and ds do lots of 'shouting' at each other. Also ds tends to make this annoying noise over the top of her when she is vocalising which isn't helping.

Jimjams · 24/07/2003 07:27

brilliant Eulalaia- and you've given me hope as ds1 has just started using echololalia loads and I'm hoping it means his speech and language will kick in soon. It is amazing what difference havoing language can make isn't it.

Just one tip - when you have the proper assessment if they offer you an autism diagnosis take it- as without it it'll be hard to get help in school (especially with all the changes to the R of N). If it turns out that he doesn't need the help anyway the R o N will be dropped and the diagnosis will be lost anyway iyswim, it won't stay with him, but could get help for those very early shcool years. I expect you know this already- but having been through statementing recently I know that having a diagnosis of autism gets you access to services that children with similar needs, but no diagnosis are barred from.

Don't worry too much about speech and dd- look at language. 18 month old ds2 isn't really saying anything (everything is still da-da, although I am Mum-mum) but understands at an appropriate level (for example if I say Where's mummy's nose, or where's J's nose he'll get the right one- ds1 struggles with that still). Lots of pointing, bringing and showing, that sort and thing and I wouldn't be worried. I do wonder whether ds2 has a speech problem (as opposed to language) but he isn't really showing any dyspraxic signs. However he does ds1's SALT with me (more enthusiastically than ds1) and I figure the SALTS themselves wouldn't do anything until he was at least 3 so i've decided not to bother worrying until he's 2!

Eualia I am pleased things are coming together for youSmile

Jimjams my ds is 20 months and I worry about is speech too, I think this is probably because our first ones are slower we worry more that the 2nd one will have problems too. Mine understands loads but isnt saying alot, but doing alot of scribble speech. I feel worried too when I see some kids his age actuallly 'talking' but he goes to nursery 2 mornings a week and I cant actually say he is any slower than the other kids for speech or language. I think aswell when you have a child with delays who seems to take ages to reach milestones it is hard to visualise how quickly a 'normal' child changes and reaches those milestones (ie. our 2nd ones)

Jimjams · 24/07/2003 08:36

I think you're right fio- and it doesn't help that I have purposely kept away from normal kids the same age as ds2- so I'm not really sure how "advanced" they should be. I guess speech shows a wide variation anyway- its language that's important and he seems a language genius to me ( compared to ds1) so I kind of assume he's OK.

Jimjams · 24/07/2003 08:36

Anyway if he spoke well and early I would probably worry he had AS

Jimjams · 24/07/2003 14:24

I'm so proud of ds2 (so probably should post about him on behav and devlop thread but never mind).

He went into the creche at the gym today for the first time (we joined on monday- he's 18 months), and he absolutely loved it. He was quite happy. When I went to pick him up he was playing in their little outside playarea and the children had just been called in. He came in, in the midst of a little crocodile of children(never had this before ds1 would have been busy examining the steps on the slide or something when he was 18 month - bless ) Afterwards we went for a swim. He's sudddenly not a baby anymore!

Anyway he's booked in tomorrow afternoon so I can take ds1 swimming.

ThomCat · 24/07/2003 14:59

Sounds like you've had a lovely day.

fio2 · 24/07/2003 17:30

How brave of him. He must have felt really settled thereSmile Have a nice time tommorrowSmile

eidsvold · 24/07/2003 22:14

Can I just pop in to say I can totally understand how proud you are. Eidsvold's dd beat my ds to crawling (he ended up never crawling and is so physically clumsy) so I think it's amazing and brilliant too. Hooray for baby Eidsvold.

MABS · 25/07/2003 07:09

That's fab Jimjams, sorry the congrats are a bit late. We're packing for a housemove and my computer time is very limited

Eulalia · 28/07/2003 18:43

Great to hear ds2 is such an independent little boy jimjams Thanks for your advice. Yes will stick with the diagnosis. I know that despite his improvements he still shows strong autistic tendencies. I worry about him getting older and the tantrums. I had to drag him out of the pool last week as he kept splashing the other children - just didn't seem to notice what he was doing. He is so big now and quite a handful and dd is getting a handful in herself too. I've heard that these tantrums can last till around age 6 so just hope I can physically handle him then.

It does sound like your ds is getting the hang of speech. It seems that with my ds he suddently started to use the echoed phrases in context. He still sounds very odd but is is amusing at times. He asked for some of my cup of tea the other day and said "can I have a piece?"

dd is showing all the rights signs of communication and social interaction so no concerns really. Its just ironic as ds actually said his first word at a year!

Jimjams · 28/07/2003 19:16

Tell me about the irony eulalia. DS1 had quite a few words by the time he was a year!

Eulalia · 01/08/2003 19:43

Proud again. ds is now 'officially' toilet trained Went to town yesterday to a birthday party which he coped with really well (he's stopped pushing other kids too) and then to Asda where I asked him if he needed and after a bit of thought he said yes and let me hold him on the big loo and he was really keen to wash his hands and use the drier.

Just need to sort out night time training but no hurries yet ...

Jimjams · 14/08/2003 19:53

ds1 went to granny this afternoon as he was a bit upset about something (no idea what but thought he might like the change of scene). He's come home wearing a pirate's outfit- he NEVER wears dressing up stuff (usually rips it off). He's even wearing a band round his head- he never wears anything on his head. I'm stunned!

chatee · 14/08/2003 19:57

yo ho ho shiver me timbers shipmate-thats excellent news jimjams, well done to your ds

eidsvold · 14/08/2003 20:01
