Thought we needed this topic here too....

mine is just exciting - today Dd cut her first tooth.

I am off to London today for a training day and it will be the longest time I have spent away from her!! SO pleased dh noticed it before I went off for the day. She has been dribbling and gnawing for weeks and finally A little tooth poked its head out of her gums.

brill eidsvold just remember not to put your finger in too often with pride as they soon learn how to bite it!!

jimjams-your posts are always great reading and all the "everyday" tasks your son has achieved are down to the excellent support you and your dh (and any outside helpers you have succeeded in gaining for your son)have given him-give yourself a pat on the back and keep up the goodwork as it's obviously working.

Lou-great to see your son has his gaiters and that he is wearing them without too much fuss, here's hoping it's onwards and upwards for him-my dd has come on so much since getting hers i'm hoping it's the same for you xxx

just an update on dd's toilet/potty training -she now asks at least twice a day(normally when we have just got in the car!!(see other proud thread)but i really do think it's cracked this time.
if i could do lots of smiley faces here i would as these were all big achievements for all our families and definetly happy mumsnet reading after a few days away...

CP · 04/05/2003 15:41

DD (18 months) is now walking well enough to wear a dress and looks gorgeous. When asked what she wanted to wear this morning she demanded a dress and then toddled around saying 'pretty'. Aaahhh.

MABS · 04/05/2003 17:10

Well ds (2.5 yrs with cp as you know) seemed today to have a slight interest in potty training. Twice he said wee-wee and i took off his nappy, and yes.......he weed! Unfortunately he seems to think dd , aged 8, is his potty. She wasn't happy and is now on her 3rd shower today But, at least he has some idea about it.

ThomCat · 07/05/2003 13:52

I have a very proud moment indeed. It happened this weekend, Charlotte shuffled! All the therapists have been advising me on how to get her to crawl, sit up on her own, stand, walk etc, but this weekend, without any tips or advice from me, she used her legs to turn round where she was sitting. I obviosly burst into tears! She then shuffled round to face me to se what the hell I was doing, which made me cry even more!! So, so proud! Great thread, thanks for giving me somewhere to show off about her!!!!

Daffy · 07/05/2003 14:30

Fantastic news ThomCat. Keep the updates coming in!!

ThomCat · 07/05/2003 14:54

Bless you Daffy!
Well she's got 1 and 1/2 teeth! It's been like that for ages, I don't think the 2nd one is going to grow anymore. I read somewhere that people with DS have a problem with their teeth. oh no poor little thing! oh well she can have false teeth when she's old enough if it bothers her and she'll always be beautiful no matter what her teeth are doing!
Eidsvold - I was over the moon when i saw her first tooth, it's so funny isn't it, we get so delirious over the samllest things!!!! (How was Saturday?)
Chatee - smiley faces are semi colons followed by a bracket and then next time you lool Mumsnet would have made it into a smiley face for you!

2under2 · 07/05/2003 16:51

oh, great news Thomcat!!!! My dd started shuffling ar the same age I think. It's so wonderful to see them get about. You'll probably hear a load of stuff from people now about how she might skip crawling, be a late walker etc. My dd started crawling properly at 19 months (though still shuffles if it's more convenient) and will hopefully start walking soon - she's 25 months now, so don't listen to them.

2under2 · 07/05/2003 16:54

MABS - that's just too funny (now how do I do the 'big grin' icon?). Hope he works out where it's really meant to go soon.

ThomCat · 07/05/2003 17:04

Its the best thing isn't it 2under2. We keep being really cruel and sitting her with her back to us so she shuffles round to see us. We can't get enough of it. Luckily she doesn't mind and thinks it's really funny and claps her hands in delight! I don't care how long it takes her to walk/crawl whatever as long as she's OK with it and doesn't get frustrated.

MABS · 07/05/2003 18:00

Brilliant Thomcat - just great.

eidsvold · 07/05/2003 18:12

it is so great looking into this thread to see all the brilliant things our children are doing. Saturday started off okay but the second presenter was a nightmare - all the things they tell you not to do during Teacher training BUT i did get to catch up with people I had taught with at my old school which was great.

Dd had her first swing in the park today and LOVED IT... I wish I had the video or camera on me to catch her gorgeous smile and the wind in her hair.

Thomcat that is so excellent and I like the part about making her do it again and again - thank goodness she likes it!!

oopss wanted to add Dd held her bottle and drank almost a whole sml bottle by herself.... YEH!!

Thomcat, fantastic news,my ds started to bum shuffle at 18 months, and it started with the turning round just like your dd.It then progressed to spinning round and around (just like a dog chasing its tail)and he found this highly amusing. He will be 2 in a few weeks and still shuffling around like mad,he can get anywhere he wants and has picked up speed(have to chase him when it's nappy changing time.
I remember how delighted i was, just like you, especially as we were told at 1 yr old he will not walk til he is 4.(suspected mild cp).Like you i am just grateful he is moving around and walking will come with time.bless them ehh!!

Jimjams · 07/05/2003 22:31

what a nice thread- just found it - well done to everyone!

ThomCat · 08/05/2003 09:57

Eidsvold - that bottle holding is fab, so much more freedom, makes life so much easier. How old is your little 'un? Charlotte is 17 months and only started holding the bottle herself 3 months ago or so, sounds like your little one is doing really well. The swinging in the park is fab, apart from the fact she hasn't worked out that she has to hold on so now and again gets thrown forward or back! Oh well she'll work it out sooner or later.
Kathylee0 - I hope you're right, it would be fab if the next step is speed shuffling! Did the therapists still try and get you to get your little one to crawl / walk or where they content then to let you both get on with shiffling? It will be so lovely for her when she can start chasing the cat. She's in love with him, as most kids are wuth their pets.

kathylee0 · 08/05/2003 14:01

my peadiatric consultant, told me that shuffling will delay him walking(but he's a to*r anyway).to me it is more important that he is mobile and happy,no matter what method he uses.physio are trying to get him to pull to stand, but he just can't grasp it!!.He will take steps (very well)but only with support,he cannot stand alone.Iused to get so stressed out with physio and what he should and shouldn't be doing,so these days i basically let him be,because i know he will sort it out in his own way and own time.
My other son who is nearly 5 never crawled and when he first started walking (at 17 months)he still had trouble with pulling to stand, and its done hime no harm, although he is a little awkward at time, but other wise he is fine.
WARNING-when your dd starts to pick up speed be prepared for lots of holes in her trousers!!!!!!,my ds has worn holes in the bum of most of his trousers, especially when in the garden.

kathylee0 · 08/05/2003 14:02

what on earth happen there?????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ThomCat · 08/05/2003 18:17

More pround stuff - My mum just called and Lottie has cut her £RD tooth. There's just no stopping this girl, a tooth and shuffling around in a circle in 1 week, what's next!!
Kathylee0 - looking forward to holes in trousers!!
And agree completley about physio's making you feel stressed at times when you know eventually they'll get there, just in their own time, in their own way. I'm just going to smile politley from now on and then sit back and let Lottie get on with it her way!

eidsvold · 08/05/2003 19:01

Agree with the physio idea - they kept wanting to get dd to roll over - particularly from front to back and she would physically resist you trying to do anything with all her might.. I was continually tutted for her not doing it... then speaking to SIL niece never rolled over at all... so I learnt to take my cue from dd and just assist her with what she showed interest in.

ThomCat dd is 9 months but she is into holding things with two hands - usually over her head so we did have some milk in the hair but what the heck. I was worried she would not really hold on so I sort of jammed her in and she was leaning rather than sitting right up - and tried not to swing her too high....

Keep the good news coming in everyone - I love reading what all your little dears are up to.

This is not recent but thought it would amuse you all. Remember when Beckham scored against Argentina last June...? I will NEVER forget it 'cos literally 2 mins later, and with no warning at all, ds walked 6 steps by himself. I was hysterical with delight as we had been warned not to expect much mobility from him at all

2under2 · 08/05/2003 20:01

we do our own physio (uhm, well, sort of anyway) by going to TumbleTots and I check up on stuff in the 'Gross Motor Skills for Children with Down Syndrome' bible (everyone should have one!). Our physio was rubbish, always late and said offensive stuff. She also didn't seem to do anything useful. TumbleTots on the other hand has been an absolute godsend and has really given dd lots of confidence and most of all the idea that moving about is FUN! Anyway, my most recent 'PROUD!!' moment was last week when dd suddenly decided that she can stand up all by herself in the middle of the room. She beams at us and claps - awwwww!! There's no stopping her now.

ThomCat · 12/05/2003 10:09

That's wonderful 2under2.
I don't have the DS 'bible' you mentioned, where did you get yours from?

2under2 · 12/05/2003 16:07

Thomcat, got it from Amazon, here's the link:
www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0933149816/ref=sr_aps_books_1_1/026-2397591-2043628
One of their marketplace sellers does it for £11.

It's a great book - every page is full of cute baby pictures (naturally all kids with DS) showing the sequence of gross motor skills, breaking everything down to show you the correct line of development, toy suggestions for each stage etc. It takes into account your child's disposition - i.e. cautious observer (like my dd!) or motor-driven and explains how your child will probably approach each stage - it's been surprisingly spot-on so far.
Woodbine House (the publisher) also do other relevant books - Communication Skills for children with DS, DS Nutrition Handbook and Fine Motor Skills for children with DS, all available from Amazon or one of their marketplace sellers, all good books but maybe not that relevant until your child is older.

Proud of ds for finally overcoming his food allergies. He was able to drink some cows milk for the first time ever yesterday, and he can also eat wheat now too. Makes my life so much easier .
