Yes carers allowance gets taken off uc but you would be claiming carers element too so it just wipes out the carers element. I claim carers allowance as i need to care for my child all the time so i wouldn’t be able to work and uc won’t try to get me to work but with just carers element they can get you into work.

Sorry to Jump in so can u claim carers allowance and then ask uc to add the carrers element?

megan345 · 23/04/2025 18:22

you can claim both carers allowance & carers element at the same time, if you earn over £151 a week (may be higher with new rates???) then you will not be eligible for carers allowance, since you’re being paid the carers allowance UC take that off your award, i don’t believe carers element & carers allowance work out to the same amount though🤔

Londongirl8922 · 23/04/2025 18:25

So I work 15hrs a week so when the time comes when my DLA comes through if they accept then what would I need to claim? My partner works full time so I will be with our child in the day and then he will be home in the evening so I can go work

I called this morning, my call has been answered straight away! I didn't even prepare ref number 😅. NC 18/12 no updates so far. Very nice lady said that it's still in the queue 😕 It's so frustrating that ppl who sent claim after you know the decision and we are still waiting.

I’m 19/12 and not heard anything yet!

do your 15 hours a week = over £196 a week (just checked new rates) if yes, you’ll not be eligible for carers allowance unfortunately, but you’d still be eligible for carers element to be added to UC which is £201 a month if your child is awarded MRC or higher, you will also get disabled child element added on to your claim which is £158 a month if awarded LRC or MRC and £495 a month if awarded HRC🫶

But can you ask uc to add the carrers element to so you get more money ?

what do you mean sorry? you can get carers element & allowance if eligible but if the allowance will be taken off UC as its a different benefit x

You need to do both or carers allowance will get taken off uc as an income and you will be out of pocket. So say you get Dla MRC or HRC and you add disability and carers element to uc and claim carers allowance at the same time, you would ask carers allowance to backdate to the beginning of award and uc to backdate the disability and carers element to the beginning of the award but you would get the disability element back dated through uc and carers allowance will backdate the carers. Carers allowance backdating is a lot quicker than uc I recieved my backdated money and started getting money weekly after a week

Curlycookie5 · 23/04/2025 18:45

I’ve just looked so carers allowance gets divided by 12 months so works out £354.90 gets taken off my uc and the carers element is £396.62 so makes me in credit abit

You need to report a change of circumstances in UC

If you look after your child more than 35 hours a week you can ask for it to be added and backdated to the beginning of award. If you have 2 children on Dla and have another adult in the house that looks after your child for 35 hours a week they can claim a second carers element on there name. One person can’t claim for 2 children with carers element

Oh i understand. Do they still get you to work if you have a husband who works full time? My little one is 3. They did make me go to a back to work meeting when she turned 3 but then said it was a mistake as my husband works full time. Does seem silly to give it in one hand and take it from you with the other but does make sense with the not needing to work if claiming that. Can you get element alone without allowance? Sorry for all the questions 🤣 no better person to ask than someone's whos got experience of it as Google confuses you!

If you backdated carers allowance, do UC not take loads off you for that bulk amount you receive?

So I work full time and my partner doesn't, she's never needed to have a back to work interview, we applied for carers allowance almost mistakingly! It's the carers element in UC we wanted. I guess carers allowance is useful to those who would otherwise be expected to return to work

This sounds really positive, congratulations 🎊 I've no idea why there's so much disparity in wait times. Surely they should just pick them off the top of the pile in order. I'm hoping he was saying 6 months just so I wouldn't ring back for a while 😅

I hope there's 2000 decision makers as well. I have in my mind, a small poxy room with the sloths from zootopia working on our cases!!!!!!

Apparently they get thousands of claims a day, I was shocked at thousands of disabled children but i guess that's what it is. Kids with learning difficulties, actual health conditions, I suppose the list is endless. One lady from dla told me the have a huge backlog as one day in particular in December they got 5000!!!! Crikey, mate!
