Hi everyone! New here, first time claiming, ordered forms 06/01 SD 13/02 applying for my little boy who is moderate/severely deaf in both ears, diagnosed 2 years ago and never even thought to apply for dla until someone suggested, so applied and guess we will wait and see. His deaf teacher told me it's very hit and miss with hearing loss, she's seen people be awarded with mild hearing loss and others denied with severe. Sent in his personal plan from school from his teacher of the deaf, his latest 2 audiograms showing his degree of deafness, salt appointments and a statement from his teacher of the deaf. Hoping to hear by the end of June. Good luck everyone.

Good luck to you! How old is your son? My boy is moderately deaf and got DLA for 5 years from 1 year until 6 years old because he was constantly taking his hearing aids out and trying to chew them which was a dangerous choking hazard. I even had X-rays from the hospital showing a hearing aid battery inside him on one of our many trips to A&E so could prove that this was a real danger 😱. I have heard it’s pot luck when it comes to hearing loss. Hope your little one is successful 🤞

Gosh!!! That must have been so scary! My little boy is 5 but has the locked battery compartment, we do have chew marks though from when he first had them! I've tried really hard to explain in the forms that just because he has hearing aids he doesn't hear like a hearing child would, I've explained every noise is amplified to the same level so he can't distinguish what is close or what is far away, it's silly things like when he has his hat on it covers the microphone so he can't hear, we was on holiday last week and the fire alarm went off and he didn't hear it because the environment was noisy, he is always within arms length for his safety. I'd love to be able to afford 1 to 1 swimming lessons for him because he can't hear in the swimming pool to do a group session and that's how I even found out that dla might be an option. I'm looking at it that I haven't lost anything in trying but it's nice to hear from someone who was successful!

I hear you Mama! It’s really frustrating because so many people think that hearing aids magically transform a deaf child into a normal hearing one, but they actually can bring more problems than they solve in busy environments. Ahh, I really hope you are successful - my boy’s DLA payments went towards 1:1 tuition so he could learn to swim 💕. All you can do is try your best for them, and that’s what you are doing. Good luck 😊

Exactly that!! It's so nice having someone who 'gets it'! The amount of times I've had to explain to people, then you have the people who shout and really pronounce every word and my boy looks at them gone out! Lol I've hard to explain he can't lipread you when your talking like that 😂. Thank you! How is your little boy doing now? Our teacher of the deaf has been a God send with school!

Yes, so many people will shout or talk really slowly. The worst was during lockdown when everyone was wearing face masks so their voices were muffled and he couldn’t read their lips or facial expressions to help him understand what was being said to him. He’s good at looking after them now and doesn’t try to eat them any more (he’s 13!) but recently diagnosed with ADHD. Looking back, it explains the constant fiddling and chewing of the hearing aids 😆

Yes lockdown was terrible! Awh bless him that would definitely explain it bless him but as long as he gets on okay that's all that matters! We are currently awaiting a paeds appointment, I've got EDS and it's a 50/50 chance of passing it on and apparently deafness is one of the first signs with children with EDS because it can affect the bones and connective tissues (i never knew this!) but it's upto a year wait so still a few months to go for that too, but he plods on and does amazing considering he could barely hear anything the first 3 years of his life!

Ah, I never knew there was a connection between hearing loss and EDS! Bless your little lad just getting on with it all. Life is so much easier if you have a good TOD too. The hearing aids are still a choking hazard as they come apart into small pieces (batteries aside!) so if your boy also chews his, maybe it’s worth mentioning? Will keep every thing crossed it’s successful for him 🤞🤞

My 2 year old is being assessed for adhd autism and global learning delay they also requested another hearing assessment because he doesn’t speak and after 3 tests there considering sedation to test his hearing nerve

Awh bless your little boy! And if he can't hear as well must be so scary for him! My little one didn't speak much just the odd word still at 3 that only me and dad understood, he used to get so frustrated and I can understand why! Hopefully you'll get some answers soon 💞

Yes, I can't remember now what I wrote in the forms, I should have taken pictures! But might be worth writing an extra statement and sending it in, I've still got plenty of time 😂

Yeah it means we deal with lots of violence and have had to put him in his own room with just a bed because he has no danger awareness he can communicate with me and his dad by pointing he screams a lot it often sound like he’s trying to say things but it doesn’t come out as comprehensive (part of the thing with the hearing nerve is it jumbles words between your ear and brain)

Ahh, bless him, that’s a lot for him to deal with. I remember my boy had to have sedation when he was little to investigate his hearing and I was so worried but it did give us info we needed. Hope you get some answers soon, it’s the waiting and not knowing that’s the worst!

If you have chew marks on his hearing aids maybe send a pic in along with an explanatory statement as extra evidence? Maybe worth a shot. Good luck! 🤞🤞

NC SD 4/12

Called last weds and told decision has been made but wouldn't tell me what it was and to wait for the letter. I havent had letter yet, text or any payment so I can only assume declined.. feeling very defeated after such a long wait.
Do they usually release payment immediately after making a decision? I would call but I saw a post earlier saying phoneline is overflowing and tbh I don't think I can take the rejection over the phone.

I’ve seen it take up to a week for some people to get back pay from the decision being made, so fingers crossed you have been awarded and it’s just a delay .

Just looking for some advice

today daughter was awarded MRC & LRM for my daughter - back pay on its way already.

can someone tell me what extra UC amount that will be added for being a carer - I’ve just done change if circumstances via my journal
& also how long does it take for them to sort that backpay roughly from your personal experiences please
PS thanks to the person that added the guide of how to do the change - it made it so quick to do.

Mine took about 10 days because it was over the xmas period but I have read it’s sometimes abit quicker x

I’m also wondering this as I have seen people say it’s took over a month and others a couple of days
