What else changes once your child is in receipt of DLA? Should I let doctors surgery know?

Mumof5babies · 06/09/2021 16:30

They're buggers my mum put a claim in for carers they back dated it now they're taking 89 a month off her because she's been over paid the previous 3 months because they back dated the carers lol

PeppaPigPocoyo · 06/09/2021 16:31

@Mumof5babies

Mine was received same day as yours fingers crossed if i haven't heard anything by friday I'll give them a call. X
You should definitely get decision soon. I’d call them and bug them a bit, the person who I spoke to this morning flagged mine as urgent as it’s over 8 weeks. So they should really be doing the same for yours x
Mummy2boys1520 · 06/09/2021 16:35

@Alk19 have you heard back on the back date yet with universal credits x

Is that carers allowance or the UC carers element? X
Mumof5babies · 06/09/2021 16:55

Carers hun i don't know how the whole universal thing works as never had to claim anything this is the first time I've ever claimed anything besides tax credits years ago but didn't qualify

Ems1991 · 06/09/2021 17:11

Yes and but request this in you journey to be backdated from wheb your dla was to make sure and if you claim careers allowance that will be backdate so with all of them been backdate it will automatically update your uc but leave a not to state you want it backdated both of them from the date your child's dla was backdated x @peppapigpocoyo

Mummyof3boz · 06/09/2021 17:14

Hi everyone really new to all this.. sent my child’s dla form away in July they received it 23rd of July still haven’t heard anything when phone they just tell u it’s still been looked at and can take up to 12weeks it’s the not knowing that’s frustrating.I see that a lot have just heard back and u were the beginning of July of hopefully I will hear soon.

Ems1991 · 06/09/2021 17:19

It will take reasses you universal creadit for the previous months for disabled child element and carers element which will then correct the careers allowance so that everything's in place it's up to you if you want to do careers though it does pay national insurance for you x @PeppaPigPocoyo

I won’t be claiming carers allowance, so I’ll just need the carers element and child disability elements back dated. Don’t want to faff about with carers allowance and having it taken on my uc as a lot of my bills inc rent come out on the day I get my uc payment xx
Mumof5babies · 06/09/2021 17:35

Its all confusing isn't it. I don't have a clue so many different benefits and departments it burns my brain don't know how you all cope. You must have a lot of patience. My mum was rippimg her hair out with the universal one she had to apply because their business closed with covid never see her as stressed dealing with them. I feel for you all 😔

Ems1991 · 06/09/2021 17:39

@PeppaPigPocoyo leave a note to your work coach in your journey and make sure you tell them you want both backdate as you have notified them with a day of finding out leave the note that's what I was told to do in the screen shot I sent x

Alk19 · 06/09/2021 17:49

@Mummy2boys1520 no still not heard a thing they said there isn't a time limit on it and to just wait :( bloody useless they are haha x

Alk19 · 06/09/2021 17:55

@Ems1991 aww that's great news when did you put your application in? When I check online it doesn't say much just being looked at X

Ems1991 · 06/09/2021 18:00

@alk19 I put mines in 16th July and it was approved on the 3rd September they said it didn't show online till the 6th though I'm just waiting on letter with instruction on how to use it online I've already been on a picked thing it's amazing the prices on some website for sensory toy is scary so I've managed to order a lot of things to calm her like bubble tube and star projector for night time and also manage to get some toys and messy play things she will love so happy hopefully it helps her 😀 x

Peppa you don't need to tell the GP your DC has been awarded DLA, but it would be wise to make sure you are registered as a carer on the GPs system.

  • You can apply for a disabled rail card and disabled bus pass.
  • You can apply for a blue badge - DC is automatically entitled with HRM, but can still apply without.
  • You will be exempt from the benefits cap.
  • You can apply for an exemption from the bedroom tax if DC get HRC or MRC and UC/housing benefit accept DC needs their own bedroom.
  • If Dc is 2y/o you can apply for free nursery hours.
  • If your DC is 3 or 4y/o and in nursery they can apply for the disability access fund.
  • You can apply for a CEA card for free carer's tickets at the cinema for DC over 8
  • Max card for carer's entry to some places.
  • You can apply for carer's allowance.
  • Carer and disabled child elements of UC or disabled child element of tax credits.

Things unrelated to DLA that may help.

  • You can ask for a carer's assessmenrcfrom the LA and an assessment from the disabled children's team for DC.
  • You can apply for a carer's grant from your LA/
  • You can apply to have your travel costs for appointments reimbursed if you are on a low income.
  • You may be eligible for the warm home scheme for energy costs and waterSure for water bill.
  • Home start
  • There are several charities that can help depending on DC's needs - off the top of my head there's - Family Fund, Boparan charitable trust, Merlin's Magic Wand, Lifeline4kids, Children Today, Well child, Roald Dahl marvellous charity, Elifar foundation, Able Kidz, Guide dogs, caudwell children.
Alk19 · 06/09/2021 19:40

@Ems1991 aww good I'm glad! The prices are so bad for sensory stuff it's such a shame but hopefully this helps x

Mumof5babies · 06/09/2021 19:58

Omg thats a lot of info lol thanks for that. Do you call your GP if your a full time carer? Or do you have to claim carers allowance to be classed as carer

Ems1991 · 06/09/2021 20:40

@alk19 if I was awarded you should have no problem as there issue are similar the fact your getting dla will help I've not had a decision yet and I qualified so you should have no problem will keep my fingers crossed for you 😊 x

Mumof5babies · 06/09/2021 21:12

Your little one sounds similar to my 11 yr old hes in pull ups day and night due to soiling and is always wet through come morning he has no feeling in his bowel or bladder he doesn't know when he needs to go same as my oldest he had no nerves in his bottom and wasn't lined up right (never claimed for oldest as i didn't know i could) my 11 yr old has just been diagnosed with ASD can't shower himself has other issues with sensory and anxiety hes a little behind in school. I'm not expecting him to be accepted looking through everyone that's been rejected is quite shocking given the problems they have. I don't know any kid at 11 that is in my sons situation but whoevers looking seems to think these things are normal 👀

PeppaPigPocoyo · 06/09/2021 21:44

@Mumof5babies that must be really tough, but I’d be gobsmacked if they reject your claim, sounds like you should qualify for the highest rate of care. My daughter is 2yrs 11 months and has been referred for autism assessment and various other things and she is seen by a Paediatrician. I included on the claim about how she will rip her nappy and clothes off 3-4 times a day and will try wee on the floor and is very uncooperative with keeping her nappy and clothes on etc. It’ll be a couple weeks until I get the award letter but she was awarded middle rate care for 2 years! She has quite significant speech and social problems too but I was honestly convinced that they would reject me. So if my 2yr 11m old has qualified for middle care then your child definitely should! X

10brokengreenbottles · 06/09/2021 21:50

You don't have to be in receipt of carer's allowance to be coded as a carer on the GP system.

Mumof5babies · 06/09/2021 22:10

Awww bless her. My son didn't talk at all till around age 3. I put it down to me having older kids and them talking for him. He's always had the bowel and bladder problems with sensory issues then in yr 4 the anxiety kicked in worse so i had a word the senco and she said she would like to refer him was pretty fast all done and diagnosed in the year. He's on the sen register too and has started getting intervention in school with his communicating. He won't play with other kids unless he's invited to must be awful for him spends a lot of time alone at break times. Dreading high school don't think mainstream is a good idea with the bowel problems and things as i know kids can be cruel xx

Mumof5babies · 06/09/2021 22:11

Do you just ring them up to do that? I won't be claiming that anyway lol the process for this has fried my brain lol
