Cup and the Teaset face 2012- and this year, Beatrice means business!

Hi. Chances are if you've opened this thread, you may have followed us from here I thought the new year needed a new thread (also the old one was nearly full!)

The basics: Beatrice has central arthrogryposis and extensive cortical dysplasia. She is 16 weeks old and weighs 8lb 1oz. She is on continuous oxygen at 0.2 litres. She is fed Infatrini with Duocal mixed in via NG tube. She is undergoing ponsetti treatment for her talipes, she also has splints for her hands and is now in a pavlik harness full time for her shallow hip sockets. She is coping very well with all of her treatments. Smile Her community children's nurse describes her as 'defying all the odds'.

The positives: If you have a 4 month old NT baby, the following will probably seem pretty poor progress, but for Beatrice who was stiff and non responsive at bith, she has made great gains. Smile Bea seems very alert in this last week and is becoming more vocal too! She happily shouts at me when something isn't going her way- a vast improvement as she couldn't even cry when born. She moves her arms in all directions now and manages to lift her legs, even with the cast and harness. When she is under her play gym with lights, she moves her arms and legs in appreciation. She also mouths when she is hungry. Her breathing pattern seems much more regular since being on oxygen. She not only recognises my voice and turns to find me, but she can also distinguish other people talking and will move her head in different directions to find who is talking. We assume her eyesight is very poor, although we know she can see shadows and bright lights when it is dark. She adores the cinema and has been twice now!

The downers: Her weight gain is painfully slow- on average 2oz per week. She has fallen off the growth charts completely. She is still sick a couple of times a day. She is having a barium meal and swallow study on Monday to see if there is anything going on. Her sats are irregular and heartrate is very high, so weaning her off oxygen (which she started when she had pneumonia before Christmas) hasn't started yet.

Support: Beatrice was finally awarded DLA at the highest rate today, and we have been told to apply for a blue badge as parking in tight spaces with her oxygen is somewhat problematic Hmm. Next week, our lovely physiotherapist who has been administering the weekly plaster casts is going to start coming to our house to do some massage and play and encourage her arm movements even more. The referral to Helen House Hospice is still being processed. After Bea's casts have come off permanently (just 2 more to go!!) I plan on taking her swimming at the hydrotherapy pool in the special school where my SIL works as a SLT.

At the end of January we have a review with our 'lovely' paediatric consultant, Dr Scrooge. We havent managed to shake her off yet!

Thanks for following us here- I'll add some more pictures in a minute. Smile

Cup - can I point you in the direction of the Respisense breathing monitor? If you get a chance/spare 10 minutes (!) have a wee look and see what you think.

Francagoestohollywood · 02/02/2012 14:24

Happy to hear she's turned a corner. I hope all goes well with the transfer.

outofbodyexperience · 02/02/2012 14:29

Whenever they transferred dd2 one of the HDU nurses would travel with her. In fact I was usually nowhere near, so try not to worry. I'm sure they will look after you both.

Hopefully in the hospice you can relax a little and try and get some rest. Life is so very gruelling sometimes, but with flashes of joy that make it bearable x

MessNessPess · 02/02/2012 14:31

Glad Bea is doing well and at least she hasn't lost weight!

CavemanDave like that monitor as very portable and unobtrusive. May just have to get one for work.

fairimum · 02/02/2012 15:38

We had a respisense monitor for my son - was fab! Also had an angelcare for at home - but when out and about the respisense was fantastic reassurance - ie when driving etc!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 02/02/2012 15:58

Thinking of you all and sending love x

emmazed · 02/02/2012 16:03

The photos are so beautiful. Bea is such a little fighter, she is fab! Hope you have a well deserved rest at the hospice. X

CaroleService · 02/02/2012 16:14

It will be the work of a moment to buy you a RESPISENSE

Just say yes, and we'll get right to it

JugglingWithSnowballs · 02/02/2012 16:19

Ooh, now that sounds like an idea doesn't it, CaroleService Smile

CavemanDave · 02/02/2012 16:45

I am trying to locate our spare Respisense... Stand by!

blueberry1972 · 02/02/2012 17:21

I think you are all remarkable and what a trouper Bea is. She is so so beautiful x

5inthebed · 02/02/2012 17:21

I didn't think it was even possible for Bea to get more cuter, but I am wrong. She is just so damn cute!

Enjoy your time at Hospice with the girls and your DH. Hope you all have a rested time.

zebrafinch · 02/02/2012 17:52

Bea looks so cozy in the blanket and its a lovely photo of the three sisters together-what a team they make!
Cup, I hope all the teaset get a rest and and that you and your DH get a chance to chat with other parents who may be in a similar position

KateUnrulyBush · 02/02/2012 18:42

Oh my goodness look at her in Knotty's gorgoise blanket! Couldn't you just eat her up with a big spoon?

SoundOfHerWings · 02/02/2012 18:51

Me and DH have been following your thread with amazement at how well you are doing, and how beautiful Bea is! Thinking of you.x

MessNessPess · 02/02/2012 19:20

Hope your settled in the hospice Cup.

saffronwblue · 02/02/2012 21:45

cup hope you are getting some support in the hospice and they have some lights to dazzle your darling little daughter with. Loved the blanket and sisters photos. Hope all of you get some rest after the tough week you have had.
I just want you to know what a privilege it is to share your family's journey through your updates and photos here.

cupofteaplease · 02/02/2012 21:47

Ooh yes, the Respisense looks like a fab piece of kit. I like the way it 'tickles' the tummy if a baby has an apnea. I've always rejected sleeping monitor mats as Bea's breathing is very shallow anyway, so she'd set the alarm off all the time. But being next to the tummy, I assume it is more reliable.

Cup - I hope DrDeath has learnt some important lessons along the way, Bea can congratulate herself on giving that damn woman an education. With a bit of luck she will chase up Bea's neurolgy appointment.

I can see why they thought 'End of Life' but this little girl of yours is a fighter and it's about time they realised that :) I hope they have sorted their 'policy' & 'communication' issues out now and that they don't put you under that kind of stress again.

The new photos are lovely - 3 beautiful girls and two very happy looking Big Sisters :) My favourite photo is still the one on your profile page - it's adorable and she looks like she's sipping on a tasty milkshake.

It's no wonder you are a bit scared - I can't imagine anyone not being!! I would be terrified. However, I am sure there will be trained staff accompanying you to the hospice and great staff there too - with a hotline to the ambulance/hospital. She will be safe x

I hope you all get in there tomorrow and are able to enjoy the weekend as a family - with or without snow!!

I hope DD2's ear clears up soon. They have both been such very very good girls haven't they. Please tell them that their internet aunties your internet friends are all very very proud of them and think they are wonderful big sisters x

Don't forget to look after yourselves & each other
xxx

Carrotcakeisace · 02/02/2012 22:18
