Cup and the Teaset face 2012- and this year, Beatrice means business!

Hi. Chances are if you've opened this thread, you may have followed us from here I thought the new year needed a new thread (also the old one was nearly full!)

The basics: Beatrice has central arthrogryposis and extensive cortical dysplasia. She is 16 weeks old and weighs 8lb 1oz. She is on continuous oxygen at 0.2 litres. She is fed Infatrini with Duocal mixed in via NG tube. She is undergoing ponsetti treatment for her talipes, she also has splints for her hands and is now in a pavlik harness full time for her shallow hip sockets. She is coping very well with all of her treatments. Smile Her community children's nurse describes her as 'defying all the odds'.

The positives: If you have a 4 month old NT baby, the following will probably seem pretty poor progress, but for Beatrice who was stiff and non responsive at bith, she has made great gains. Smile Bea seems very alert in this last week and is becoming more vocal too! She happily shouts at me when something isn't going her way- a vast improvement as she couldn't even cry when born. She moves her arms in all directions now and manages to lift her legs, even with the cast and harness. When she is under her play gym with lights, she moves her arms and legs in appreciation. She also mouths when she is hungry. Her breathing pattern seems much more regular since being on oxygen. She not only recognises my voice and turns to find me, but she can also distinguish other people talking and will move her head in different directions to find who is talking. We assume her eyesight is very poor, although we know she can see shadows and bright lights when it is dark. She adores the cinema and has been twice now!

The downers: Her weight gain is painfully slow- on average 2oz per week. She has fallen off the growth charts completely. She is still sick a couple of times a day. She is having a barium meal and swallow study on Monday to see if there is anything going on. Her sats are irregular and heartrate is very high, so weaning her off oxygen (which she started when she had pneumonia before Christmas) hasn't started yet.

Support: Beatrice was finally awarded DLA at the highest rate today, and we have been told to apply for a blue badge as parking in tight spaces with her oxygen is somewhat problematic Hmm. Next week, our lovely physiotherapist who has been administering the weekly plaster casts is going to start coming to our house to do some massage and play and encourage her arm movements even more. The referral to Helen House Hospice is still being processed. After Bea's casts have come off permanently (just 2 more to go!!) I plan on taking her swimming at the hydrotherapy pool in the special school where my SIL works as a SLT.

At the end of January we have a review with our 'lovely' paediatric consultant, Dr Scrooge. We havent managed to shake her off yet!

Thanks for following us here- I'll add some more pictures in a minute. Smile

Glad she had another good night. Have you managed to catch up on any rest at all Cup? x

slowburner · 02/02/2012 11:48

Checking in - so relieved to hear that you all had a good night, we used to find with DD she was always illest before the cold/flu/throat infection/virus etc became evident.

and loving the photos, especially the 3 of your girls together!

FabCatsMum · 02/02/2012 11:53

I am very happy no no not wet eyed, not me for you all. CUP you are more than AMAZING you are beyond words for all you have done for all your children.

Did Dr Doom apologise for being too stupid to realise that Bea is a fighter?

bigbluebus · 02/02/2012 11:54

Fantastic news that Bea has had a good night. I hold my breath every time I log on to MN now and am so glad I have been able to breathe a sigh of relief the last few times!!
You are all constantly in my thoughts. I hope she continues to go from strength to strength and that you get home soon.
Love the new photos!

cupofteaplease · 02/02/2012 12:12

Fab the apology was because we'd had a bad night and although the nurses were brilliant, there was some fussing over her end of life plan. They insisted they would have to use the bag to try and resuscitate her, due to 'policy', which was not what we wanted. She wad apologising that a fraught situation wad made that little bit more distressing due to lack of communication. She also conceeded that we should have seen Bea's neurologist before now, as it's hard to make decisions on her resuscitation etc without an honest prognosis.

Wheels are in motion to get us to the hospice tomorrow, they've ordered an ambulance for Bea and I, and Dave will follow with the girls.

I'm quite nervous about being on my own with her, I'm ashamed to say. Sad I'm just so scared she'll go apneaic again.

She's back on 0.2 o2, and keeping 100% sats, but she hasn't gained weight since Monday.

I hope you don't mind, but I did ask my friend to tell the nuns to include Beatrice in their prayers. :)

I love the new photos of Bea! She really does love lights, doesn't she! :)

FabCatsMum · 02/02/2012 12:20

Thank you for taking the time to answer me, Cup when you have so much going on.

Try not to worry about being alone as it won't be for long and you have come so far. You will both me fine.

I am too far otherwise I would offer any help I could give you.

DottyDot · 02/02/2012 12:26

Cup you are flipping amazing. It must have been terrifying that night - totally understandable to be feeling scared - I'm in awe of how strong you are.

Fingers crossed you get to see the neurologist soon and thanks for keeping us updated - much love to all the teaset as usual Smile

JugglingWithSnowballs · 02/02/2012 12:26

Good to hear you will be able to move to the more supportive, friendly, and relaxed hospice tomorrow cup

  • And you will be going in an ambulance, so presumably with a paramedic available in case you should need support - try not to worry

Come on, Bea !

starfishmummy · 02/02/2012 12:39

Hope the move to the hospice goes ok; once you are away from the busy ward I hope you can relax a little more.

"I'm quite nervous about being on my own with her, I'm ashamed to say. sad I'm just so scared she'll go apneaic again."

I can remember those feelings too. Entirely normal and hopefully it will get "less hard" as time goes on.

BB3 · 02/02/2012 13:11

Cup the picture of bea and her sisters is just beautiful! They look so proud and happy!

Hope the transfer goes ok, I think as everyone said, nerves are normal after what you have been through these past few days! Glad Dr Death conceded, do you know when you will see the nuerologist?

Glad DD2 is picking up x
