We are back from the hospital, Beatrice has been fed and dh has gone to work. So I have time to sit down and start the first post about the journey ahead, which I hope will be a long and happy one.

Beatrice was born at 36 weeks weighing 3lb 14oz. After an initial diagnosis of Edward's Syndrome was proved to be incorrect, an MRI and genetics tests were carried out and today we have some initial answers.

Beatrice's brain is very small and underdeveloped. The consultant described it as 'simple', because it does not have all of the detail expected in a typical brain. She explained that we should expect Beatrice to be severly disabled. She is also very small and delicate, and at risk of catching infections. They anticipate that she may suffer from fits. They have told us to watch out for her breathing during feeding, as her muscles are weak. They also commented on her shallow breathing pattern. They believe the problem was caused by a gene that both dh and I must carry, but they haven't got the answers yet and admit that they may never know. They have ultimately described her condition as life-limiting.

However, we have left the consultation feeling at peace. We don't know what the future holds, but realistically, neither do the doctors. We have great faith in Beatrice, she amazes us every day, and she is surrounded by so much love from us and her wider family.

I would like to use this thread as a space to jot down how she is doing, and how we as a family are coping with life. If anyone wants to check in and follow her progress, please do. We couldn't have got through the past 2 weeks without MN. Smile

Happy two-month-birthday dear Beatrice

argghh · 16/11/2011 14:03

Just poping in to say hi and well done to Beatrice. And well done to positive care staff.

I do think you need a break though reading back through the posts. In fact you and your man need a couple of hours off together. Is there anyone at all you would trust to look after her? Or is there any SN respite care ?

cupofteaplease · 16/11/2011 14:25

Wow DutchOma I hadn't even realised it wad her 2 month birthday- thanks for reminding me. She is currently wearing your white hat Smile

Have just caught up with the thread and am delighted to see that Bea has gained weight and that the care she is receiving for her hands and foot is all so positive. How amazing that she rolled onto her side on her own! That must have made you feel very optimistic about her capability for movement. She must be a strong little thing! Just seen your last post and sorry to hear that Bea is poorly at the mo. Hopefully she will be on the mend soon. Hope you are not too stressed and tired. It sounds like you have so much on all the time, you are managing so well xx

SkinnyMuffin · 16/11/2011 15:06

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/11/2011 15:32

I'm going to light a candle and send lots of get well soon thoughts to Beatrice whilst I'm sewing this afternoon.

Would you and she like a hand made, beaded heart or star to hang over her cot or on the christmas tree next month? I'm making them for a craft fair, and would love to send you one. I have one in pink and purple, and the ones I'm making now are in blue with silver, pink or gold beading.

I am on my phone so apologies for bad typing and short update.

Community nurse sent Bea to hospital yesterday as her sickness was very bad- during and after most feeds. She only gained 2oz last week. She thought Bea might have stopped digesting her milk. I blamed the crappy NG tube they had used as she never had problems with the silk tube.

So we came to hospital and eventually they changed her tube and sure as eggs is eggs (or whatever the expression is that my mother uses), she has kept every feed down- bar a bit of blood-tinged vomit after the tube change.

We are still here under observation until a Dr discharges Bea. But guess who came in to see her? Our very old friend Dr Death!! She was quiet and didn't saty much, but she commented on how filled out she is now and complimented Bea on climbing from below 0.4th febrile to 2nd centile. She asked about her development and tried to hide her surprise when I said she is responding to dh and I, and is tracking a black and white mobile that BobLoblaw sent her. Go Bea Smile

It's very boring in the 'isolation booth', especially as the TV doesn't work-related I need an iPad.

Dh went to work at 4pm yesterday so I'm hoping he might come in soon so I can go and get a cup of tea (please!) It's our wedding anniversary todayand having Beatrice still with us is the best present we both could ask for. Smile

Thank you for your messages and sorry if Beatrice had got you worried.
