We are back from the hospital, Beatrice has been fed and dh has gone to work. So I have time to sit down and start the first post about the journey ahead, which I hope will be a long and happy one.

Beatrice was born at 36 weeks weighing 3lb 14oz. After an initial diagnosis of Edward's Syndrome was proved to be incorrect, an MRI and genetics tests were carried out and today we have some initial answers.

Beatrice's brain is very small and underdeveloped. The consultant described it as 'simple', because it does not have all of the detail expected in a typical brain. She explained that we should expect Beatrice to be severly disabled. She is also very small and delicate, and at risk of catching infections. They anticipate that she may suffer from fits. They have told us to watch out for her breathing during feeding, as her muscles are weak. They also commented on her shallow breathing pattern. They believe the problem was caused by a gene that both dh and I must carry, but they haven't got the answers yet and admit that they may never know. They have ultimately described her condition as life-limiting.

However, we have left the consultation feeling at peace. We don't know what the future holds, but realistically, neither do the doctors. We have great faith in Beatrice, she amazes us every day, and she is surrounded by so much love from us and her wider family.

I would like to use this thread as a space to jot down how she is doing, and how we as a family are coping with life. If anyone wants to check in and follow her progress, please do. We couldn't have got through the past 2 weeks without MN. Smile

Dear cup it sounds as if it has been a tough time but little Bea is doing better now. I love to think of her confounding Dr Death. Congratulations on your anniversary and hope you and DH have a moment to yourselves.
Sorry you are feeling bored in the isolation cubicle - remember we are all in there with you in spirit (would be a bit crowded and not isolated if we all piled in, in person!) x

4madboys · 17/11/2011 09:24

so i am right in thinking the problem was simply her tube and she is now ok as they have changed it? annoying but at least it was simple and not her being ill as such, purely that the tube they used hadnt agreed with her.

hope you get to go home soon xxx

ExitPursuedByaBear · 17/11/2011 09:32

Has she gone back to a silk tube then? It just sounds so much softer.

Glad that Dr Death has been humbled by Beatrice the Brave's progress.

Whatevertheweather · 17/11/2011 09:36

Hi Cup so glad Bea is doing better with the new feeding tube Smile How fab that Dr Death has had to eat her words.

Happy Anniversary - hope you get to go home today xx

eaglewings · 17/11/2011 10:24

Wonderful news for you anniversary, congratulations.
Friend at church asked after Bea on Sunday, unbeknown to me, she has been faithfully praying for Bea and you everyday ever since the day before your appointment with Dr Death weeks agog when we had the prayer chain on that Monday.
Now where is that cup of tea :)

Thumbwitch · 17/11/2011 10:32

Oh brillian moniker, Exit - Beatrice the Brave, I like it!

Ha! to Dr. Death being humbled by a tiny wee baby - hope she learns from it. FX eh.

Very very happy that Bea is doing better with the silk tube and keeping her feeds down again, hope that her weight gain picks up again now. When can you take her home again?

(((hugs))) to you all, especially you Cup because in the end you are having to deal with the most here - I hope that you are getting all the support you need in RL from everyone as well.

Keep going, Bea - you've got so many people rooting for you, I'm sure you're going to go from strength to strength xxx

Go Beatrice! Grin.

Let's hope Dr Death learns that baby's are individual and don't read the books for what they are meant to do..

TheOriginalFAB · 17/11/2011 14:33

I love the "Off to the safari park" Photo.

cupofteaplease · 17/11/2011 14:38

We were released discharged at 11am. Typically, she was sick after we got home Sad. I swear she loves the hospital, as soon as we get in there her eyes open wide. If she were a dog, I'm sure she would wag her tail Grin. She seems pretty uncomfortable after her last feed, so I'm now wondering if it was the tube causing sickness after all? I guess time will tell. The consultant was happy to do some trial and error to eliminate causes- first the tube, then reflux, then digestion. We'll see.

Off to hospital again tomorrow for her first cast change. I have added some pictures of her club foot on my profile so you can see the progression hopefully over time.

She had her 8 week jabs on Monday, just like a normal baby Grin. Then on Tuesday she had her synagis jab which protects against the RSV virus which causes bronchilitus. Do any of your SN children also have this jab? I'm not sure they offer it all over the country?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius I'd absolutely love a Christmas tree decoration, thank you Smile. I brought a baby's first Christmas decoration in Disneyland Paris in May, but when I looked at it the other month, it was smashed to bits. Sad Our living room and Christmas decorations have a pink/purple theme, so the purple would be great!

I bought Bea a Christmas present the other day, a glow worm that lights up and plays lullabies. But I panicked that I was tempting fate by buying presents to keep for another 6 weeks so I gave it to her to use straight away!

Thanks for thinking of us whilst we were in hospital, and thanks eaglewings to your lovely friend who has continued to pray for Beatrice. It is definitely paying off. Smile

My how she has grown. Lovely photos. Thank you for sharing them.

starfishmummy · 17/11/2011 15:30

Just caught up with the thread and read about your trip to hospital; glad Bea is home now and looking beautiful in her new photographs.

I seem to remember reading that sometimes when Bea's tube is causing problems they push it a bit further in? If it goes in too far that can cause problems, so worth bearing in mind. I'm not sure the type of tube matters, but ideally as it is for more than a few days, she should have a silk one all the time (more comfortable for her) so worth kicking up a bit of a fuss if they want to use the plastic type.

I can also remember the" not wanting to get the xmas presents too early as it will tempt fate feeling!". I got the ones for DS's first xmas about a week beforehand. Although naturally he was more interested in the wrapping paper.

HalfTermHero · 17/11/2011 15:59

Good that Bea is home again! I hope that the 'being sick' settles down for you soon. I absolutely love your new photos! Bea looks so much bigger and the treatment on her foot looks to be off to a great start. My dd3 loves her glow-worm, a lovely choice of present. Have you seen the light show projectors that you can clip on the side of cots? I picked one up in Mothercare last week (on offer, it was about £12). They project pictures of teddy bears and the such like onto the ceiling of a darkened room whilst playing music. Might be an idea for another Christmas present given that lucky Bea has had Father Christmas come early with the Glow worm!

4madboys · 17/11/2011 17:13

glad you are all home again :)

and hope the new tube helps things settle down, does she still get trapped wind etc even with the tube?

we have the same gloworm and my 11mth old dd loves it :) i actually bought it for ds4 when he was a baby as i had the same one myself, but he wasnt very interested, dd is tho, they are very cute :)

the photos are great, she is looking bigger and looks very content and well.

hope the cast changing goes ok for you, looking forward to more updates on how her foot progresses, ihave a friend whose dd had club foot, she is fine now tho.

DeeScent · 17/11/2011 18:08

Sending lots of love and prayers to you, Bea and your whole family. Lovely to see the new photos.

What an absolutely scrumptious little girl! Would love to cuddle her

TCOB · 17/11/2011 18:19

Little fat chubba baby Smile. LOVELY pics, thank you so much for sharing. And sod the cup of tea - it's your anniversary, is there a bottle of bubbly at home in the fridge???

SkinnyMuffin · 17/11/2011 18:59

Those eyes! Just soooo gorgeous, she looks so huggable :)

Also cup, your hair looks amazing Envy!!!!!

Hulababy · 17/11/2011 19:07

She is beautiful!

Thumbwitch · 17/11/2011 22:56

Lovely pics, thank you for posting them :)

Glad you're home again and totally understand your thing about the Christmas presents for Bea. My DS wasn't born until 4th December and I didn't buy a thing for his Christmas until after he was born, just out of paranoia.

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 18/11/2011 00:00

Happy Anniversary!!!

Lovely photos!! I can't believe how much she has grown! I think you are letting the other girls go though, clearly not a lot of face washing going on anymore Grin

Re Dr Death - ha feckin ha. Pity Bea could quite manage to stick her tongue out at her, but good enough Grin

The 'silk' tube just sounds so much nicer! :)

I hope the 'being sick' settles down soon, it's frustrating it was OK in hospital and not at home - grrr.

I hope it goes well tomorrow :)

saffronwblue · 18/11/2011 08:02
