A thread for Beatrice: Because a life filled with love is a life worth living.

We are back from the hospital, Beatrice has been fed and dh has gone to work. So I have time to sit down and start the first post about the journey ahead, which I hope will be a long and happy one.

Beatrice was born at 36 weeks weighing 3lb 14oz. After an initial diagnosis of Edward's Syndrome was proved to be incorrect, an MRI and genetics tests were carried out and today we have some initial answers.

Beatrice's brain is very small and underdeveloped. The consultant described it as 'simple', because it does not have all of the detail expected in a typical brain. She explained that we should expect Beatrice to be severly disabled. She is also very small and delicate, and at risk of catching infections. They anticipate that she may suffer from fits. They have told us to watch out for her breathing during feeding, as her muscles are weak. They also commented on her shallow breathing pattern. They believe the problem was caused by a gene that both dh and I must carry, but they haven't got the answers yet and admit that they may never know. They have ultimately described her condition as life-limiting.

However, we have left the consultation feeling at peace. We don't know what the future holds, but realistically, neither do the doctors. We have great faith in Beatrice, she amazes us every day, and she is surrounded by so much love from us and her wider family.

I would like to use this thread as a space to jot down how she is doing, and how we as a family are coping with life. If anyone wants to check in and follow her progress, please do. We couldn't have got through the past 2 weeks without MN. Smile

Dear Cup-fab pictures of Bea in her Christmas suit!!! Glad you all had a brilliant day.Love to you all!

CestTout · 28/12/2011 20:41

Lovely picture! Hope Boxing Day went well!

cupofteaplease · 28/12/2011 20:52

Yes C'estTout Boxing Day went very well thank you! There were 26 of us in the end, but after I'd laid out the buffet with mum and dh by 11am, I didn't lift a finger for the rest of the day! Grin I sat and cuddled Bea and people came to me if they wanted a chat, and one of my sisters was on a mission to refill my glass before it was even empty! I felt very spoilt, and the house was so full of laughter and love, and it was lovely to see Bea being fussed over by her siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents. It was a very special day. Smile

Today I took Beatrice for an ultrasound of her hips, and they showed a problem with one, but it wasn't surprising. We then popped her up to the children's ward via open access as her breathing was a bit harder than usual. We ended up there for 4 hours, it was so busy. But they put her on antibiotics as her chest was a little wheezy. Whilst there, one of the play workers came and gave Beatrice a bag of presents, as she'd been in so close to Christmas. In the bag was the most gorgeous quilted blanket with 2 rabbits on (we have 2 rabbits at home). It was so beautiful.

The community children's nurse is coming tomorrow, and she is going to try and take Beatrice off oxygen for a while and observe how she does.

That sounds like such a wonderful day, am really, really glad everyone fussed over you and Bea you both deserve it!

The presents sound lovely, hopefully made up for the wait at the hospital :-)

Will be keeping my fingers crossed for you tomorrow, hopefully it won't be too long until Be a is off the oxygen.

Thumbinnapuddingwitch · 28/12/2011 21:14

That sounds absolutely lovely, Cup! What a nice thing to do, give Bea the presents - and such fortuitously appropriate ones too!
Shame about her hip but as you said, not really surprising - I hope that it's something they can do something about as and when. And let's hope that the oxygen won't be a necessity for much longer. Xmas Smile

MunchingNoPickles · 29/12/2011 00:16

Awww, glad you all had a grand time.

Book re hip tho not unexpected and presents how nice.

Maybe the extra oxygen whilst she has a dodgy chest is not a bad thing and maybe you could have a tank at home for those occasions, do you have a sats monitor?

Whatevertheweather · 29/12/2011 09:07

Christmas sounds perfect Cup. I've just taken a peek at your new photos. She is so adorable and is starting to look very grown up sat in her bumbo. Gorgeous xx

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 29/12/2011 11:29

Cup - Boxing Day sounds FAB!! Xmas Grin

Did they give you any idea what they can do about Bea's hip?

How lovely of the hospital to give Bea some presents, the blanket sounds lovely.

It would be surprising if she was OK without the oxygen at the moment while her chest is bad, but hopefully the AB's will fix that quickly!

SarahFim · 29/12/2011 12:26

So happy for you that Boxing Day was such a joy, you're blessed to have those lovely people around you.

The contrast in the last photo is amazing - Bea is (obviously) gaining weight and growing up. Lovely to see.

Thinking of you all. xx

I'm in awe of you all and have thought of you all, especially over Christmas. Your dd2 bought tears with her little prayer. I hope the ab's clear her infection and she's off oxygen soon. A blessing for Beatrice as she voyages in to 2012:

May the Lord bless you and keep you.

May the Lord make his face to shine upon you,
and be gracious to you.

May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you,
and give you peace.
