A thread for Beatrice: Because a life filled with love is a life worth living.

We are back from the hospital, Beatrice has been fed and dh has gone to work. So I have time to sit down and start the first post about the journey ahead, which I hope will be a long and happy one.

Beatrice was born at 36 weeks weighing 3lb 14oz. After an initial diagnosis of Edward's Syndrome was proved to be incorrect, an MRI and genetics tests were carried out and today we have some initial answers.

Beatrice's brain is very small and underdeveloped. The consultant described it as 'simple', because it does not have all of the detail expected in a typical brain. She explained that we should expect Beatrice to be severly disabled. She is also very small and delicate, and at risk of catching infections. They anticipate that she may suffer from fits. They have told us to watch out for her breathing during feeding, as her muscles are weak. They also commented on her shallow breathing pattern. They believe the problem was caused by a gene that both dh and I must carry, but they haven't got the answers yet and admit that they may never know. They have ultimately described her condition as life-limiting.

However, we have left the consultation feeling at peace. We don't know what the future holds, but realistically, neither do the doctors. We have great faith in Beatrice, she amazes us every day, and she is surrounded by so much love from us and her wider family.

I would like to use this thread as a space to jot down how she is doing, and how we as a family are coping with life. If anyone wants to check in and follow her progress, please do. We couldn't have got through the past 2 weeks without MN. Smile

Grin at having to watch her so she doesn't roll of the bed.

What's the betting Beatrice is the only Baby we want to hear has rolled off the bed Grin.

SoupDragon · 12/11/2011 11:48

Sonds like a really positive day :)

Apart from the dimwits at the DWP. Have you tried phoning in case its just how its been put through the system? This may, however, be akin to suggesting you move the house 5cm to the left and then instigate world peace.

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 12/11/2011 12:03

Cup - what a way to celebrate 8 weeks :) She's a little trooper isn't she! Did they say how long she'd probably need the cast(s) for? DWP - you have to wonder don't you!! Hopefully they can 'hold' your application and reprocess it again in 5 weeks, save you having to do it again. But honestly - it's just madness.

Hope you all enjoy the film today - let us know if it's worth going or not!!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 12/11/2011 12:32

Cup - there's a 3 month waiting period for DLA. Just resubmit the form (and actually add all the extra physio/splint stuff in. Did you keep a copy of the form?

MABS · 12/11/2011 13:26

so pleased you had a good doc ystdy :) agree with Saggar re DLA.

skinnymuffin · 12/11/2011 14:24

Grin What a great update!

Whatevertheweather · 12/11/2011 14:32

Oh Cup what a lovely update. Go Bea starting to roll Grin. How fabulous. What a positive meeting - it must feel so good to feel the professionals are finally working with you instead of against you. Bea's certainly made them sit up and take notice.

Enjoy Arthur Christmas - I'd quite like to take dd to see that. She's at the cinema watching Tintin with dp at the moment - I've stayed home to mn and eat chocolate clean up Smile

stegasaurus · 12/11/2011 15:39

Congratulations to Bea and all of you on such a great 8 week milestone. My healthy NT baby wasn't able to roll like that until a long time after 8 weeks. I'm glad that you have found some medical professional who believe in her too. I am a lurker on this thread though I did make one previous post near the start, but just to add that at work I have met many babies/ older children who were never expected to survive anywhere near as long as they have and Bea is just like all of them - so determined and such a fighter and with a wonderful family to fight with her.

pruney1977 · 12/11/2011 19:49

What a fantastic boost for you and Bea (and the rest of the teaset!). And she rolled over :)
What a lovely, little beacon of hope she is :)

sleepysox · 12/11/2011 20:08

Well done Beatrice and well done you! She's a little star! I'm so glad you've had such a fab day.

BobLoblaw · 12/11/2011 20:16

Wow, Bea is a superstar :) I'm so pleased everyone is being more proactive. I remember the same happening with Bella, it's such a boost.

anonandlikeit · 12/11/2011 21:02

Thats the great thing about physio's and orthopods they treat what tehy see not the dx on paper.
Well done Bea.. keep proving them all wrong! x

Haberdashery · 12/11/2011 21:04

That is a fab update. Those physio chaps sound like lovely lovely people. How nice to have a bit of positivity from her medical team. That must be a real lift for you.

4madboys · 12/11/2011 21:22

just checking in again! good news on the continued weight gain and sounds like a really positive physio appointment! YAY for rolling.

as for the DLA claim that is riddiculous, if you can face it try getting on the phone to someone, it sounds like some kind of error in the sytem?!! an you are entiteled to the money, hopefully you will get a nice back payment when they sort it out :)

hope you are feeling better yourself and happy 8wk birthday to Bea :)

DutchOma · 12/11/2011 21:28

Speak to your MP about the DLA.

saffronwblue · 12/11/2011 23:18

Go Bea- keep on rollin'! I am so pleased you have met some positive and constructive health professionals. x

madwomanintheattic · 13/11/2011 00:32

don't fret about the dla - it's just a box ticking exercise. mostly they make you wait until 6mos unless you qualify for the life-limited amount anyway, so take heart and just re-send it in 5 weeks. it's just another red tape thing - i honestly wouldn't bother with the mp or anything - it'll take just as long and be far more stressful.

glad everything else is getting more positive! and the orthopod is quite right. never say never.

dd2 isn't supposed to be walking or talking. Grin they always do doom and gloom to cover their own backs. a breath of fresh air to find a positive soul in the medical profession! Grin

well done on weight gain!

youarekidding · 13/11/2011 08:09

Grin What a lovely lovely update. I found myself both crying and laughing at your post and I'm so pleased the team around Bea are so positive as well.

Enjoy your weekend.

ExitPursuedByaBear · 13/11/2011 16:50

Another one here saying what a fabulous update. Rolling at 8 weeks! That is absolutley brilliant.

So glad you are meeting positive attitudes at your appointments. It makes such a difference doesn't it?

Hurrah for Baby Beatrice the Brave

DeeScent · 13/11/2011 22:13

So pleased at your positive news. Another one here praying for progress for Bea and strength for you. Smile Well done those docs!

MunchingNoPickles · 13/11/2011 22:21

CupOfTea when i cared for a baby using the Ponsetti method we gave her a long bath that morning to soften the cast and wrapped it in clingfilm to help it stay damp so much quicker to remove at clinic. Sometimes it was soft enough for them to snip it away without soaking, see if they are ameanable, our loved it as made our visit a briefish one.

triskaidekaphile · 13/11/2011 22:24

Hurrah to the rolling one. x

Starshaped · 14/11/2011 08:55

happenstance · 15/11/2011 08:24
