When do babies REALLY sleep through! Be honest!!

So far on this 8 month journey of parenting we've tackled the usual sleep issues, cat naps etc. Night feedings etc, still going strong... slept through once at 6 months. Hasn't since. Anyway, long short of it. Every mum I know has the same stories. Multiple wakes, screaming sessions middle of the night, co-sleeping till 2years old on boob in bed... etc etc. Heard it all. We've done gentle sleep training and baby responded well but then hits a new phase or gets sick and it all goes tits up.

So tell me, when did your babe ACTUALLY sleep all night long? Like the 7-7 dream

Can't remember exactly, but by around 6 weeks they could do a good stretch and both my DC slept through from about 3 months aside for the odd blip when teething etc. I did read a certain book (the one that shall not be mentioned on MN) Although I did not follow it to the letter I just used it as a guide mainly for routines. I also avoided co sleeping becoming a habit but mainly because of safety worries and feeding to sleep. Both are now happy well adjusted teens with good sleep habits.

3 and a half. We were often up 4/5 times a night and it just became the new norm. Since Christmas she has been
Sleeping through almost every night

BellatrixLestat · 27/01/2020 20:04

Entirely depends on the child I think. I've been lucky with mine but it is not the norm by any means

DC1 8 weeks
DC2 6 weeks
DC3 13 months

Jeleste · 27/01/2020 20:05

DC 1 at 10months. He did have phases before that (first time at 2months old) where he would sleep through every night for 2weeks straight or even a month, but then another 'wake up and feed every 2h' phase hit again.

DC 2 slept through from birth. I had to wake her for feeds Confused

yesyesdear · 27/01/2020 20:06

First baby (now 2.5 years) started to sleep through at about 1 year.

Second baby (3 months) started to sleep from 8 - 7 at 2.5 weeks, no waking at all during the night. As soon as I changed to formula, oddly enough!!!

SmellMySmellbow · 27/01/2020 20:07

4.5 years (when he started school)

Sipperskipper · 27/01/2020 20:08

DD is 2.5 and slept 10- 7 from about 8 weeks, and then when I started putting her ‘to bed’ in our room whilst we stayed downstairs at about 5 months she slept 7.30-7 with a dreamfeed at 10pm.

Some of it probably luck, but she wasn’t a ‘sleepy’ newborn and needed a lot of help to sleep. First weeks she would only sleep on the boob (constantly) and I was at breaking point.

Stopped bf at 6 weeks, which helped, and had a pretty strict routine. Was also pretty strict with getting her to sleep in her snuzpod / basket rather than on me. Never had to do CC, but tried to get her to sleep as independently as possible from a few weeks old. She was swaddled, had a dummy, white noise, pitch black room, lots of patting etc. It paid off as she still sleeps very well, but it was a bit stressful at the time, and I definitely got obsessed with the routine etc.

Smurf123 · 27/01/2020 20:08

18 months for us.. With very gentle sleep training at this point. 22 months now and he goes down at 7 happily plays in his cot until he falls asleep sleeps through to between 6-7 every morning

JillyGake · 27/01/2020 20:09

My son slept through from 3 months. He was bottle fed though. We used a sleepyhead too as his arms would drop as he fell asleep and that would wake him up.

GrannyBags · 27/01/2020 20:11

DS slept from 10-6 from when he was first bought home from the hospital. D niece didn’t sleep through, or on her own till she was four and a half. I used to feel so bad for my poor exhausted sis in law.

polkadotpixie · 27/01/2020 20:17

About 10 weeks he slept 10-6 and 12 weeks he slept 8-6. FF since birth bar the odd bottle I managed to express

He's been sleeping 7:30-6:30 since he was about 4 months old and yes, I did break the sleep guidelines by putting him up in our room for a couple of hours alone before we went to bed because he was too disturbed downstairs

He does occasionally wake in the night if he's poorly but generally does 10-11 hours at night

I'm too scared to have another because I'll never get that lucky twice!

drivingtofrance · 27/01/2020 20:25

6 weeks.

Pretty much as soon as I put him in his own bedroom (was perfectly acceptable back in the 90s). Until then we just kept each other awake.

Christmashope19 · 27/01/2020 20:28

My 1st was sleeping from 7pm to 5am at 10 weeks old
My 2nd was 12 weeks old
They were both around 6 months old when they started to sleep 7-7!
I was very lucky
I was also obsessed with routine and if they didn’t wake up at 7am I would wake them up
Crazy to some but it worked for us

boatyIII · 27/01/2020 20:33

DD1 9 months but then had a blip around 1yr and then started sleeping through again around 15/16 months.

DD2 is 11 months and still wakes twice a night 😓

Maryann1975 · 27/01/2020 20:33

Dc1, reliably sleeping 12 hours a night by 6 weeks. Prior to that, had been sleeping for 2 six hour blocks since 2 weeks.

Dc2, I reckon by second birthday he was sleeping through more nights than he woke, but we still Saw him often during the night and he always woke up before dawn and wouldn’t go back to bed.
Dc3, sleeping through reliably before first birthday, but hadn’t been waking more than once a night for a long time before this.
They were all breastfed and I parented them all the same. If they don’t want to sleep through for whatever reason, I don’t think you can do a great lot about it. (I’m actually fed up of discussing this with a friend who has had one baby, who slept through really early. Her methods were never tested on another child, so is it her methods or were they just lucky to get a baby who was programmed to sleep through the night from a young age?)

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 27/01/2020 20:34

Dc1-10 weeks
Dc2-11 months
Dc3- 12 weeks
Dc4- 12 weeks
Dc5- 11 weeks
Dc6-13 months
Dc7-4 months

IwantToDatePicard · 27/01/2020 20:37

DD 6 weeks
DS 9 weeks

Weekday28 · 27/01/2020 20:41

I dont think my 8 year old has ever slept until 7am 😆 she will sleep a solid 10 hours though. It really varies try not to worry.

kirinm · 27/01/2020 20:43

17mo and we currently have her sleeping through most days - has only been a couple of weeks. She did sleep through for a bit around 10m but that turned to shit very quickly.

I don't expect her to sleep through from now on. She's given me hope before and I don't trust her anymore Wink

pinkdressinggown · 27/01/2020 20:51

My DS is 13 months and still doesn't do it. He's done it a few times, but not consistently unfortunately... there's a lot of leaps and developments going and I think they get in the way of sleep. I know a few people whose babies have done 7-7 from 8 weeks though and every time I hear it, it never fails to get me wondering what I could have done differently!

eurochick · 27/01/2020 21:00

7-7? Never. But through the night without waking from 19 months.

kateybeth79 · 27/01/2020 21:02

DS 6 months, DD 6 years

BendingSpoons · 27/01/2020 21:09

DD: 11.5 months slept 7.30pm-6/7am. Has woken up in the night about 5 times a year since.
DS is currently 11 months. I celebrated having a really good night last night, he only woke 3 times!

Mumof1andacat · 27/01/2020 21:12

10pm to 7am at 6 weeks and 730pm-730pm at 6 months. That's what my son did. Others will be different. I didn't sleep train. He just did it

SpeedofaSloth · 27/01/2020 21:15

DC1: didn't sleep past 5am till about 4yo. Would sleep 1930 to 0500 from about 6mo.
DC2: didn't sleep through the night at all until about 15mo, not reliably so until about 3yo. Would usually be awake by 6am. I swear she was trying to kill me via sleep deprivation.
