Guys

Just wanted to start a thread about why everybody loves Skiing, thought it would be good as Winter setting in.

Mine are - watching daughter fly past me down a slope !! :) The fresh crisp mountain air, we ski in March/April so generally sunshine!

Evenings, good food and wine with friends an open roaring fire whilst the children play!! Ahhh Bliss :)

Oooh great idea! All of yours.. And I'll add drinking mulled wine in a bar on the slopes at the end of a days skiing. Smile

Carol1379 · 20/11/2014 11:20

Oooh yeah Massistar, mulled wine/gluvine! Lunch time treat, yummy !!

The best feeling ever, makes for such a wonderful holiday xx :) :)

Soothing aching muscles in a sauna or hot tub aahh!

ISingSoprano · 20/11/2014 17:09

The tiredness at the end of the day is soooo different from the tiredness after a day at work - all that fresh air, exercise and adrenaline! Grin

Johnogroats · 21/11/2014 12:03

Hi carol!

Similar to you...having fun as a family in crisp clear mountain air. Ideally in sunshine! Either cosy fires / restaurants with vin chaud or sunny mountain restaurants baking in the sun with a cold beer. Looking super cool going down easy reds, and the sense of achievement when we all survive a hideously difficult mogul run (looking like turkeys on skis)

Grin

Mmm sidles in... Do you accept snowboarders Wink
This year DD was 10 months and not yet mobile, but next year she will be 21 months - we've even got her a baby snowboard.
We've got a really long trip lined up and I can't wait - its what I live for every year...

Carol1379 · 21/11/2014 13:18

Defo accept Snowboarders !! One of our party is !! And yes what we live for every year !

Just love this, so excited, got ages to wait but love talking about it ! Got our stuff out the loft at weekend, just so could check my daughters ski suit fits !! She was wearing her goggles around the house !! :)

Bring it on :)

Going in January. Can't wait to see my toddler on skis for the first time, have some yummy cheese fondues for dinner, not wear any make up for a week (no blusher required in the mountain air!), family games in the house in the evenings, stunning scenery everywhere you turn, watching the brilliant French skiers from the safety of the chair lift, getting out gear together in the mornings (another layer won't hurt will it?!), and of course as previously mentioned the gluvine!! Can't WAIT!

Carol1379 · 21/11/2014 13:39

Mummify, you will just love watching your little one, our daughter skied so well this year, just over 4 and half!!

Did year before on plastic skis!!

She was bombing down past me shouting hurry up mummy !! Such a wonderful way to spend a family holiday ! Just lush :)

Mummify · 21/11/2014 14:15

Plastic skis? Tell me more - are they better for little ones? Lighter? Can you hire easily? Do you hire normal boots to go with them? x

Millie2013 · 22/11/2014 19:49

Mind if I join you, but I can't get excited yet! OH has decided he wants to go skiing over new year, but I'm struggling to find something suitable, with childcare for a toddler (too young for ski school). I would have started looking earlier, but he's only just freed up some time off and we can only go that week
We've had two seasons off (pregnancy and work commitments), so I really would like to go!

Lovemcgarrett · 22/11/2014 19:56

Ooh can I join? In desperate to take my two - they are 3 and 5 - I want them to both have lessons together so I'm not sure if I need to wait until the youngest is 4?

morningsarepants · 22/11/2014 20:03

Love you don't have to wait, DS started at 3 and so will DD

Skiing for me is all about spending quality time with DH doing something we both love to do. Can't wait for DS and DD to be able to ski with us too, but I expect they'll be overtaking me by the time they're about 8!

lovetoski · 22/11/2014 20:59

Family time, fresh air, exercise, great views, food, wine, my ds 14 been skiing since 6 so far far superior to me. Love my Dh and Ds spending time together as now a teen don't see him so much. Going for Christmas this year 4 weeks today !!!

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 23/11/2014 16:36

I hate to tell you all this but I just like going very fast. I'm a lifelong adrenaline junkie.

We're taking DS (4) and DD (2) for the first time this year and I am beyond excited - I made DS have his birthday party in the snowdome to get a feel for things and it's still three months away.

Love some ski schools, but not all, will take them from three. I found more of the places geared to the french will accept them from three. We're contemplating a private lesson for DD who will be 2 3/4, depending on how she likes it and how much she wants to follow DS. Apparently it depends on quads strength (they don't have much really until 4-5) and how much they want to have a go.

CaurnieBred · 23/11/2014 16:46

I don't know why I love skiing when I am a lazy bones at heart, am not very confident and usually give up after lunch, but I do! It is lovely spending time with DH; just the two of us whilst DD at ski school.

We go to Italy in January and have just been told that the guiding service has been withdrawn due to enforcement of local laws (just like France). Looks like back to Austria next year!

waddleandtoddle · 23/11/2014 20:03

Can I join?! I am taking DS now he's 3 and can take lessons, so as you can guess it's been 4 long year's without fresh air, mountains and apres ski. I can't wait to see how he skis and it's going to be soo magiCal as we are going after Christmas Day.
Getting too excited for words.
I've also been practising my squats - fingers crossed every one counts!!

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 23/11/2014 21:03

Where is everyone going? We're off to the most suitable resort for beginners and children.... Val d'Isere Hmm! (it's issues with my ski boots that are sending us there). I'm sure the children will be fine though really and the pool complex is great if they don't take to skiing Grin Grin

[hops up and down with excitement]

Siennasun · 23/11/2014 23:08

Love this thread Grin

Love everything about skiing, especially late in the season when you can ski in a t-shirt and sunbathe at lunchtime.

Also love just being in the mountains, vin chaud, fondu and raclette, eating Cake in mountain restaurants, sledging and playing in the snow with my 2 year old, marmots....

There's loads of other stuff. We are going to Morzine, my favourite resort. Wish it was tomorrow!

CaurnieBred · 23/11/2014 23:21

Gressony with Esprit. I wasn't impressed with the tuition DD got in Mar 13 when we went to Val with Esprit (her confidence was severely knocked) so have decided to avoid France until she is older and doesn't need ski school.

massistar · 24/11/2014 11:29

We're going to Italy at half term. Can't wait!

Bouncinbean.. We're snowboarders too and I think for the first time snowboarders may outnumber skiiers in our party. We go in a massive group (31!) of families and it's definitely the highlight of my year.

I'm also hoping to squeeze in a long weekend snowboarding with my husband in January. Fingers crossed!

massistar · 24/11/2014 11:32

For those with very little ones... Both of mine have skiied since they were 3. But they only did an hour's private lesson at that age. My youngest only went into proper ski school last year at just turned 5 but she's been with us every year since she was a baby and my DH used to put her between his legs on his board so she was desperate to give it a go. My then 8 year old left me for dead last year and was coming down black mogul runs like a pro!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 24/11/2014 11:43

We're going in January. Just need to get ds2 some thermals and a 2nd pair of mittens and we're sorted.

We go with a group of friends and their families - it's a great week catching up with one another.

Fresh air, exercise, lots of time with DH and our friends (we don't actually see a lot of our dc!), the amazing mountain food, vin chaud, hot tub by the stream, dc having so much time playing in the snow.

Someone else cooking and cleaning, wine on tap, relaxing by the fire.

I even love sharing a family room for the 4 of us - hearing the dc's breathing as I fall asleep each night......

We go 7 weeks in Saturday - I can hardly wait!!

MeanwhileHighAboveTheField · 24/11/2014 11:49

We are lucky enough to live near one of the Scottish Ski resorts.

I am looking forward to the season, but dreading it in equal measure - my husband works away do getting 4 kids ready and up the hill is no mean feat!

Carol1379 · 24/11/2014 13:43

Loving the fact that so many people are enjoying this thread ! :)

Off to Les Arcs Easter 2015 !! Group of 6 adults, 4 children and 1 baby, gone for a posh catered chalet and cant wait to get in the hot tub !!

Mummify - plastic skis just clip over normal winter books, my daughter was 3 and half, she was 4 and half this year and did ski school and skied so well.

Muchtoomuchtodo, love what you said, agree with everything !! :)

Keep the thread going x
