Mumsnet TV show starring Mumsnetters ready to view. Please tell us what you think...

You may remember at the end of 2009 we asked for volunteers to be filmed having the Mumsnet hair cut and take part in a Mumsnet TV makeover etc. Well the final cut of the first Mumsnet e-TV magazine show is now up and ready to view (and before we go any further there's definitely a starring role/Mumsnet book/our undying gratitude for anyone who can think up a snappier title for the show. Anything other than Mumsnet Magazine TV show would be an improvement).

Made for Mumsnetters and starring - who else - Mumsnetters, the current plan is that this will be a regular show bringing you all the MN staples - AIBU, beauty tips, MN makeovers, sleb interviews, some political stuff - the works.

This episode is a trial run to see what works (and what doesn't). We already have an idea of what doesn't work (mostly any time MNHQ get involved/appear ) but we think you'll agree that the Mumsnetters are great - absolutely star material.

You can find the show in the MNTV slot on the right hand side of the page on Chat, AIBU, Site Stuff, webchats, Telly addicts, competitions and active conversations. Please take a minute (or seven) to have a look and then tell us what you think of it. All suggestions and feedback welcome (but do be gentle with us...). Oh and don't forget a name for the show.

Thanks and enjoy,

MNHQ

Now if there was two women despairing over the harsh mirrors and excessive heatnig in a changing room then getting fucked offf with the whole pointtless mess and going for a burger then I'd recognise my life.

LowLevelWhingeing · 18/01/2010 16:44

My first thought is that I'm so impressed with the brave mumsnetter who put themselves out there - usernames and all. Nice to see you're not all big hairy truckers!

IMHO mumsnet's strengths are tips (shared knowledge), support and debate. With a bit more, ahem, production values I think the style and beauty tips stuff could work, but I don't think AIBU was well represented by one blurry woman having a rant. It's only interesting if you can rant back!

I could see recipes/weaning/BF/parenting tips working though. I used to like those programmes (can't remember what they were called sorry ) where Carrie and Justine gave advice on dealing with -pain- -in- -the- -arse- challenging toddlers. Very useful for new parents.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 18/01/2010 16:45

Ah just watched the rest - michelle didn't do the haircut right at all.....

JeremyVile · 18/01/2010 16:45

STOP CHANGING! I only just caught up

ItsAllaBitNoisy · 18/01/2010 16:55

ViperTV?

southeastastra · 18/01/2010 17:06

i liked the aibu bit, who was that?

MollyRoger · 18/01/2010 17:07

thought the makeover was cringey - like a bad pastiche of daytime tv. (not the mums, they were very brave and looked lovely)

mamazon · 18/01/2010 17:09

[[cringe] well at the very least it will dispel the myth that im some glamorous supermodel! i look bloody awful

bibbitybobbityhat · 18/01/2010 17:10

Makeover programme: details of the clothes should have been shown, and agree not shot on the stairs, house would have been fine if properly lit, the lovely mumsnetters could have been properly made up (I loved the clothes Princess Toadstool was wearing).

AIBU - isn't it a bit pointless? Its sort of like an in joke to those of us who have been here a while, but won't it make Mumsnet look slightly barking to someone trying to find out more about Mumsnet by clicking on the tv link?

Mamazon and Reality trying the eyelash curlers - hmmm, could there have been more to it? Were there any other products to test?

Michelle and the haircut - I'm afraid I think it looked worse after! I believe that haircut works best on straight hair. Again, sorry, but it makes us all look slightly mad.

MollyRoger · 18/01/2010 17:10

I'm a little bit in love with Marsy btw...

Bonsoir · 18/01/2010 17:11

I'm afraid I thought it was a lesson in what not to do!

Why don't you start from the basics - get the MNers to get themselves decent underwear and a great haircut and make-up, and then try some clothes on them?

And ditch the house - it is far too cramped and makes filming very difficult (and unflattering).

Bravo to the brave MNers who exposed themselves, however.

hattyyellow · 18/01/2010 17:11

Not at all Mamazon, I think you looked lovely - although I couldn't work out why on earth you'd need to bother with eyelash curlers with such lovely long eyelashes!

Which made the beauty bit slightly silly..what about taking one of the problems posed on style and beauty and addressing it on a weekly basis?

NotAnOtter · 18/01/2010 17:12

yes.... agree with silverfridge and ron

i liked it but a bit 'this morning' a bit 'same old' which i don't think mumsnet is

ToddlerYears · 18/01/2010 17:12

Like hocuspontas, I enjoyed putting faces to Mnetters.

Apart from that, it was a bit amateurish, makes Mumsnetters look really puerile ... don't see the point of it, wouldn't watch it and makes me a little embarrassed to be a Mumsnetter ... sorry, I'm not good at being gentle, but I'm honest.

Well done to everyone who agreed to be on camera though, you're all braver than I would be!

hattyyellow · 18/01/2010 17:16

I agree with others - there's so much that's positive about mumsnet and I don't quite think it captured it. I think the USP of mumsnet is the fact that it has lively debate, great advice and some really interesting points raised that make you think about things differently.

Surely the majority of users don't really know who the people featured are (or is that just me?) so it needs to be more about other things than just "names".

How often would you be able to update it/change content? Could you feature each week a topic from AIBU, a beauty topic, a parenting feature based on a topic that has attracted lots of interest on the talk boards?

I have the MN haircut, thoguh you cant see it very well in that clip as i had my fringe bit clipped back.

We were there most of the day filming different segments but i guess they had to cut it all to fit the slot.

I think with a little more production it would make a really good mini show on a womens TV channel like those that show the midwife and baby programmes.

ahundredtimes · 18/01/2010 17:25

Well, can I ask - what is it for?

I mean that helpfully because I think I'd offer different thoughts on it depending on its purpose.

Is it bit of home cam just for the jolly of MN users? In which case, it was rather fun. Or is supposed to be for something else or more? If for something else and more, then the format and the production values might need a look at?

MollyRoger · 18/01/2010 17:27

it would be good, in style, to have something like jeggings and show different shaped mums wearing them successfully.

MollyRoger · 18/01/2010 17:29

I liked the will young interview actually, even though I am not a huge fan. It was rather nice.

Boobz · 18/01/2010 17:34

Terrible production quality - but that's been said.

I don't know, I just felt a bit embarrassed by it, TBH. MY DH already thinks I'm a bit of loser for being on here so much; if he saw that, he'd probably ban me from ever coming on here again.

Sorry.

Boobz · 18/01/2010 17:36

That wasn't really helpful, was it? Sorry, I meant to say, I think you should probably have spent about 4 or 5 times the budget, hired a proper interesting stylist to do the first bit (not a camp bloke we've never seen before), and also hired a producer who has slightly higher aspirations for it all (not meant as a slight to the current producer).

ahundredtimes · 18/01/2010 17:38

Oh that's a bit strong! I think the problem is that everyone has seen that format done with great production values on TV. We can't expect MN to come up with those, and have decent lighting etc.

Maybe run with the home cam thing, and do more of the talking heads - or gather a group together and give them an AIBU - or gather a group and get some of MN's fashionistas to dress them (goodness only knows where you'd get the clothes from though).

Talking heads - or groups of MNers might be the way to go?

Though, again, depends on what it's for imo . . .

mamazon · 18/01/2010 17:41

I think we should have it as a bit of a loose women kind of format.
discussions of that weeks hot topics, each lady wearing something thats been recommended on the S&B threads, a quick trial of a beauty tip and some more debate over the AIBU.

that way you get a more MN feel rather than a This Morning feel.

does that make sense? i know what i mean in my head but exlaining it not so well

PollyTechnique · 18/01/2010 17:42

I thought the Mumsnetters themselves came over quite well - you know, natural and friendly, confident. There was just no opportunity (with the exception of AIBU) for them to be opinionated, which is what makes MN so interesting to me.

I'd like to see a round-table discussion of a more meaty topic - give it 15/20 mins so Mnetters could really get their teeth into a topic of widespread interest.

It came over a bit sound-bit-ish and trivial which doesn't do MNet justice when you think of all the brilliant, thought-provoking 1000 post threads we have on here.
