Swearing, nicknames etc

Afternoon Mumsnetters,

There's been a bit of discussion about offensive nicknames. We do allow swearing on MN, as you know - it's a site for grown-ups, not for children - but as our overriding aim is to make folks' lives easier and many Mumsnetters object to the use of the c-word, in particular, we think it would be best if folks didn't use it in their nicknames. Using it as a nickname effectively means you are using it not for effect but for every post. We all recognise the need to say cunting sainsburys every now and then but all the time is a bit much, we think.

As we say in our Talk Rules and Netiquette:

"It's not our policy to delete swearwords but we do draw the line at obscenity, so, if you're not sure which side of the line your swearword of choice may fall, it might be best not to use it."

Cheers.

What do all you people do, then, when you and your DC are out in public and someone nearby starts swearing or indeed using racist language (Dn't tell me you poo yourself and dial 999 though I know there are some people who would seriously contemplate doing that (and at least one will undoubtedly pop up in a minute to assert that it is actually against the law to shout FUCK in a public place)
Isn't it a rather better idea to discuss with your DC, should they actually notice what is being said, that some people use impolite words and that shows the poverty of their vocabulary or the stupidity of their attitudes?

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 19:13

you are unusually dim tonight SGB.

AnnTwacky · 29/09/2009 19:13

yawn

bibbitybobbityhat · 29/09/2009 19:14

No one is objecting to swearing or trying to censor swearing. You silly moo.

bibbitybobbityhat · 29/09/2009 19:15

Read what people have posted.

Lilyloo · 29/09/2009 19:16

Solid i think the posters who didn't want their kids to see it was maybe a couple , most posters were offended themselves at the word regardless of their dc's!
Surely this is a similair thing to reporting a post anyway which i am sure the majority of us have done at some point....

Mamazon · 29/09/2009 19:16

SGB - i swear. a lot. and to my shame i do it in front of my children far more than i should.
they know that swearing is something that adults do and that it is not big or clever and they they aren't to do it.

I don't think this is actually about children reading over shoulders at all. i think its about attempting to keep Mn the light hearted and fun place it has always been rather than watching it sli[ further and further into a competitionto see who can have the most vile and offensive name.

there used to be a challenge to find the most humerous and witty name. something so obviously vulgar isn't witty or funny or clever, its purile.

this isn't about censorship, its about a big red cross and the words try harder next time

QuintessentialShadow · 29/09/2009 19:17

Good post mamazon.

sassy · 29/09/2009 19:18

Have skimmed this and see that I am now banned (about half =way through thread).

So we can discuss offensive nicknames but I have to be banned?

I'm off to Netmums.

Lilyloo · 29/09/2009 19:20
