Swearing, nicknames etc

Afternoon Mumsnetters,

There's been a bit of discussion about offensive nicknames. We do allow swearing on MN, as you know - it's a site for grown-ups, not for children - but as our overriding aim is to make folks' lives easier and many Mumsnetters object to the use of the c-word, in particular, we think it would be best if folks didn't use it in their nicknames. Using it as a nickname effectively means you are using it not for effect but for every post. We all recognise the need to say cunting sainsburys every now and then but all the time is a bit much, we think.

As we say in our Talk Rules and Netiquette:

"It's not our policy to delete swearwords but we do draw the line at obscenity, so, if you're not sure which side of the line your swearword of choice may fall, it might be best not to use it."

Cheers.

Never mind sorting out the swearing! What about my logging in problem? Huh? Huh?

seeyounexttuesday · 29/09/2009 14:26

Absolutely agree with you 100% Justine.

seeker · 29/09/2009 14:27

very sensble.

does AF have to name change though? or just CW?

Knickers0nmahead · 29/09/2009 14:43

Does that mean CillySunt has to go?

FarkinBarkin · 29/09/2009 14:43

Is 'farkin' classed as a swear word?

I'd like to keep my name if I can but don't want to offend either.

BitOfFun · 29/09/2009 14:43

Ooh, has someone let you down, let MN down, but most of all let themselves down, Justine?

CayPeag · 29/09/2009 14:44

And can we have a rule that no-one's allowed to call themselves any sort of sp*der please?

JustineMumsnet · 29/09/2009 14:45

Quite, Bitoffun

fruitshootsandheaves · 29/09/2009 14:45

can I get down on my knees and BEG fruitshootsandleaves to change her name while I'm here. Maybe a thread started by the Goddesses of MNHQ may persuade her (or maybe him!) to change

completely irrelevant to this thread really
sorry
and
thank you

( I may resort to swearing soon)

Danceaway · 29/09/2009 14:48

Have to say I find the C word funny these days - found it offensive a few years ago but it has lost its power to shock me as I've seen and heard it bandied about more, including on MN, and to my mind that's a good thing. Do respect that not everyone feels this way. Will there ever be worse word than the C word I wonder?? Or is there already? Irresponsible to ask here I know. sorry, sorry...

hullygully · 29/09/2009 14:49

When do we start burning books?

morningpaper · 29/09/2009 14:49

I agree with Justine

morningpaper · 29/09/2009 14:51

We can burn this one for starters

hullygully · 29/09/2009 14:52

Am getting the hang of the hierarchy now - you suck up to them and others suck up to you! Hey it's school all over again.

hullygully · 29/09/2009 14:53

Am buying everyone that book for xmas. It's marvellous. Do they have a cock version?
