I've participated in a variety of threads since I found mumsnet. I enjoy reading and responding to those threads that are of a benefit to me in terms of advice and also enjoy giving advice or being there as support to people who may need it.
I have also participated in the more light hearted threads. I did this because at the time I was in a light hearted mood and they offered me what I was looking for. I don't always participate in them as I may feel I don't have anything to offer or may not be in the mood for light heartedness.
I must admit that when I do participate in them I suffer feelings of guilt and slight anguish as I wonder what other mums are thinking of me and whether I am wasting valuable space and time on mumsnet that should be given over to more serious discussions. I find I have to push these feelings to one side as I don't believe I should be having them.
I appreciate that not everyone wishes to participate in light hearted threads but also appreciate that people at times wish to leave their current lives/issues behind and just enjoy some fun and laughter even if it may be frivolous (sp?).
My personal view on mumsnet is that it is a site set up with absolutely no discriminating factors. The title may make people think it is purely for mums but in fact it is for anybody that wishes to participate in any of the conversations that are published or create their own. Therefore, you can be a single male with no children or family and still participate offering another insight or view which will be welcomed.
I did find it sad that one poster had to put in the title of their thread that it was a serious issue and they were sad. I posted on that thread and they were correct it was serious and sad. However, I found it a shame that they thought they may have to do that. I don't believe anyone would ever have posted something light hearted or jokey on that thread having read the initial comments and understood the tragedy that had befallen a family.
I suppose what I really want to say is that I believe the beauty of mumsnet is that it offers all people from all walks of life in whatever mood they happen to be in something. You can find anything you are looking for on mumsnet or create it yourself. That is an extremely rare quality in a website and I hope to that end it doesn't change.
I'm sorry mum2toby was highlighted as a specific individual who contributed to the light hearted threads and would like to put my name beside hers as I have also contributed to these. Therefore, please also make comments about my own postings if you wish.
