Because I love it as it is.

Of course ther is always room for a little improvement BUT it works very well for me as is.

OP posts:
Carriel · 14/05/2003 15:53

Thanks for that message of encouragement Bobbins. I'm sure Tech will be chuffed too (and relieved he hasn't got to start rejigging lots of stuff)

Mum2Toby · 14/05/2003 15:54

Well said Bobbins!

pupuce · 14/05/2003 17:15

Actually I did want to ask if you could think of a solution for this new trend on the site where people have live birthday parties/pub metings,... only a few tag along and it takes a HUGE amount of space on the active conversations.... no problem if people what to take part but can't we have a PURE chat room?
Juts wondering.
Thanks

Rhubarb · 14/05/2003 22:34

Bobbins - I was thinking about you today. How are you?

Lil · 15/05/2003 11:04

Agree Pupuce. Actually I don't like this live chat - if I wanted to chat I would use a chat room. I like mumsnet because its more 'intelligent'.

I don't suppose Tech could move it elsewhere (or stop it altogether!!). I mean its not what mumsnet is about.

No offence Mum2Tony, but you've introduced a lot of nonsense on this site now that is only appealing for a few people. It's not what most of us cpome to mumsnet for surely?

(Lil ducks behind her office partition)

Mum2Toby · 15/05/2003 11:08

EH Lil??
If you have a look it's not me that's started most of those threads!! I've just joined in.

Offence taken! What's your problem with it?

Sorry if a little bit of fun is not 'intelligent' enough for you.

Mum2Toby · 15/05/2003 11:10

Why people feel the need to personally criticise I'll never know.
If you don't like it, don't read it. Simple as that.

Now feck off and leave me alone.

Mum2Toby · 15/05/2003 11:13

And another thing........... I think I've contributed to Mumsnet a lot!! I offer advice, sympathy, a shoulder to cry on and also start threads that become lively and helpful discussions.

Why am I constantly made to feel like I have to defend myself and justify my presence on Mumsnet!!!???

Britabroad · 15/05/2003 11:29

Don't think you are being fairespecially to mum2toby.
Mumsnet can be used for both serious issues and fun. If you don't want to join in the fun then that is OK don't join in, but please don't criticise those that do.
What makes mumsnet fab is that it provides everything a mum needs.
I am far away from friends and family and need practical advice and a bit of fun. Why do you say I shouldn't be allowed to do both.

Lil · 15/05/2003 11:35

Mum2Toby, I knew my post would annoy you, although it was not the intention. Yes you are a real laugh and fun to read..up to a point, then the fact is in the last month or so there's been a big increase in threads which are pure chat, and threads which turn into nonsense(flirting or otherwise). Yes I name you cos you are one of the key people that like typing introducing this stuff.

What is wrong with liking mumsnet because it is an intelligent site???? there are so-o-o many same-y chatrooms on the internet, why turn mumsnet into just another one of those?

why should mums that come onto this site have to wade through reams of drivel in order to find the interesting stuff? I'm addicted enough to mumsnet to not have to want to waste time looking into threads that are about nothing at all!

Of course this is just my view but am sure there are others that think the same but wouldn't like to say so. Is it Carrie et al's intention to let the site go down this route???

Mum2Toby · 15/05/2003 11:39

Well it seems that Mumsnet also enjoys insulting people now. I'm sure the threads of arguments are just as tiresome, but see fit to name me as the culprit knowing that I have to defend myself????????

You don't HAVE to look at the threads. And I've been here since December last year. Is that when they started????

Check your facts and I'll tell you again. Stop naming me as the culprit. Is there a petition on the go yet to get me to leave Mumsnet. Perhaps you should start one, you might as well have. You have insulted me with your blind accusations.

Mum2Toby · 15/05/2003 11:39

ANNOY ME??? That is an understatement. It really hurts.

Mum2Toby · 15/05/2003 11:41

And Mumsnet is STILL an intelligent please to visit. Surely intelligence can also include clever witted people.

judetheobscure · 15/05/2003 11:41

Mum2Toby - keep on posting! - can't understand the people that criticise your posts - you always bring a smile to my face.
To all the mumsnetters that don't like the "chatty" threads - just ignore them. I don't often contribute to them but I often read them just for a laugh.
Would it be possible to have a longer "active conversations" list? Perhaps a 25 one and a 50 one.

SoupDragon · 15/05/2003 11:43

Lil, how could M2T posibly not take offence to your comment?! I don't see how you can claim that you didn't intend to annoy her with that statement. It's way out of order IMHO.

If you don't like the "silly" threads, don't go there - simple as that. I come to Mumsnet for advice, to give suggestions and to have a chat and a laugh. The "special needs" threads are appealing to only a few people but I don't see you complaining about them. I'm not taking a dig at these threads by the way, just using them as an example - they are not relevant to me so I don't look at them. That doesn't mean they're not valid for others.

Lighten up! Mumsnet is a community.

Britabroad · 15/05/2003 11:43

Of the current active conversations I acn see 2 that are pure chat. Which out of 25 doesn't seem that bad.
It's also very hard to distinguish the conversations that do not contain some chat.
We can ask for help and advice in a friendly and chatty way.

Britabroad · 15/05/2003 11:46

Anyway aren't you participating in a chat now???

aloha · 15/05/2003 11:47

I think that was really unfair and personal, actually. I have just come back after a break to calm down (er, don't think it worked) and don't find it very different. I liked the YURT. I don't contribute much to the 'silly' threads but each to their own. It's a site for all members surely? I see M2T on all sorts of threads (which she definitely didn't start) and lots of people contribute to the 'silly' threads who also post very seriously. I think mumsnet can be be a place for support, advice and for tough and rigorous and even controversial debate and for gossip and nonsense too. I like the Property Ladder thread, myself.

Mum2Toby · 15/05/2003 11:48

Thanks folks - isn't it tiresome that some people feel the need to insult others.

Careful though - you don't want to stick up for me too much coz the last time this happened (oh Rioja, where are you?) I was accused of seeking attention and an ego boost!!!!

I MEAN>>>>EH??

Mum2Toby · 15/05/2003 11:49

Hey well said Aloha!
I didn't start the YURT one.

SoupDragon · 15/05/2003 11:54

How about we move the chattier threads into the Live Events section?

Maybe we could start a "Household Duties" section too for those cleaning threads.

meanmum · 15/05/2003 11:55

I've participated in a variety of threads since I found mumsnet. I enjoy reading and responding to those threads that are of a benefit to me in terms of advice and also enjoy giving advice or being there as support to people who may need it.

I have also participated in the more light hearted threads. I did this because at the time I was in a light hearted mood and they offered me what I was looking for. I don't always participate in them as I may feel I don't have anything to offer or may not be in the mood for light heartedness.

I must admit that when I do participate in them I suffer feelings of guilt and slight anguish as I wonder what other mums are thinking of me and whether I am wasting valuable space and time on mumsnet that should be given over to more serious discussions. I find I have to push these feelings to one side as I don't believe I should be having them.

I appreciate that not everyone wishes to participate in light hearted threads but also appreciate that people at times wish to leave their current lives/issues behind and just enjoy some fun and laughter even if it may be frivolous (sp?).

My personal view on mumsnet is that it is a site set up with absolutely no discriminating factors. The title may make people think it is purely for mums but in fact it is for anybody that wishes to participate in any of the conversations that are published or create their own. Therefore, you can be a single male with no children or family and still participate offering another insight or view which will be welcomed.

I did find it sad that one poster had to put in the title of their thread that it was a serious issue and they were sad. I posted on that thread and they were correct it was serious and sad. However, I found it a shame that they thought they may have to do that. I don't believe anyone would ever have posted something light hearted or jokey on that thread having read the initial comments and understood the tragedy that had befallen a family.

I suppose what I really want to say is that I believe the beauty of mumsnet is that it offers all people from all walks of life in whatever mood they happen to be in something. You can find anything you are looking for on mumsnet or create it yourself. That is an extremely rare quality in a website and I hope to that end it doesn't change.

I'm sorry mum2toby was highlighted as a specific individual who contributed to the light hearted threads and would like to put my name beside hers as I have also contributed to these. Therefore, please also make comments about my own postings if you wish.

aloha · 15/05/2003 11:56

What happened to the Flylady anyway?

whymummy · 15/05/2003 11:58
