Advertising - who would you be unhappy about

Hello, hello,
We wondered if you would mind giving us your two penneth on which companies are off limits as far as advertising is concerned. Ruling out obvious candidates like arms dealers and the BNP is there a concensus about anyone else? Would for example MacDonalds sponsoring the Food boards make people cross or would it be a case of why not let them spend some of their enormous mountain of profits keeping mumsnet afloat? Who's aloud and who isn't bascially... (thanks in advance .

Thanks Crunchie.
RE pop ups - our general rule is to say no to them. This one is very restricted though - one view per week and not here for long - so we thought it might be ok? It was discussed here this week - do add to that thread if you're unhappy. There's nothing to stop us taking it off if folks really object.

Did I miss the popcorn?

I don't want wine or chocolate ad's. That is because I am not an adult and I have no wilpower. Blimey, every time I see a post by Blossomhill or Cadbury I start salivating.

katierocket · 19/05/2005 13:30

ha moo, i have the same problem with 'marslady'

RTKangaMummy · 19/05/2005 13:32

Perhaps we should have regulations on the nicknames that are allowed then

marthamoo · 19/05/2005 13:33

And Aero...

JustineMumsnet · 06/06/2005 17:28

Can we pick your collective minds again on the subject of Stem cell research companies and what you think about these guys advertising on mumsnet? If you have a view do let us know,
Cheers,
Team mumsnet

Justine, excuse my ignorance, but what would they be advertising? Is this the sort of service where you can store cells from the umbilical cord, or are they looking for us to supply them with something?

JoolsToo · 06/06/2005 17:34

I'm not that educated in the subject but anything that advances medical science is ok in my book

crunchie · 06/06/2005 17:39

Justine just back from hols, been thinking about you and maybe able to send you some stuff. I'll try to look at it tonight.

JustineMumsnet · 06/06/2005 21:28

Yes that's the sort of thing Ladymuck. We had a complaint when we had a banner from this type of company recently and wondered if this was a general view?

JustineMumsnet · 06/06/2005 21:31

Thanks Crunchie, whenever you can manage is fab.

ladymuck · 06/06/2005 21:34

Sorry - did you mean that they are offering umbilical stem cell storage services? My questions was whether it was that or something else (they could be looking for domations of cash or unused embryos for example).

Newbarnsleygirl · 06/06/2005 21:38

Advertising Celebrity Love Island would really offend me.

Stem cell research, absolutely fine

JustineMumsnet · 06/06/2005 22:04

Sorry Ladymuck,
Must improve my reading skills... meant the former ie offering stem cell storage - not anything else.

I guess it might be worth pointing out that whilst the NCT used to take those ads, I think that they've had a change of heart.

Personally whilst I see the value in stem cell storage facilities, I despair of the fact that these companies take huge sums of money from individuals to "protect" their child, when what is needed is a national stem cell bank (similar to the Blood bank) with access to all children, not just the chosen few whose parents could fork out £hundreds.

I think that the NCT objection was that the collection process might interfere with the third stage of delivery. But I'm a c/s girl myself, so never really look at that side of things.

Do I object to them advertising on mumsnet - not personally, but they do prey on parental fears, so would hate to see others getting upset that they didn't love their children enough to spend £XXX to store their cells.

ladymuck · 06/06/2005 22:48

Yep, thought I'd read about this recently .

JustineMumsnet · 08/06/2005 08:52

Thanks Ladymuck,
That's very helpful.

can't possibly read all this! McDonalds and nestle can sponsor the allergy section as far as I am concerned because finding nut free food would be a lot harder without nestle and McDonalds at least know what is in their food - and its rarely nuts. Of course if Morrisons advertised their they'd come in for some great slagging!

Generally I dislike censorship for sites aimed at adults, except for pornography. Would also feel abortion clinics were inappropriate. I'd prefer not to see cigarette advertising. Its up to us to limit children reading over shoulders if we don't like the ads. I wouldn't care if you advertised political parties as I know there would be plenty of counter posts There are quite a few companies I'd slag off if I saw them advertsiing though

JulieF · 10/06/2005 10:38

I personally have no objection to stem cell ads as long as they were not worded in such a way as to create panic or be emotional blackmail.

The NCT have to be a lot more careful than mumsnet would because they have to keep the midwives happy. If an NCT mag such as bumps and babies contains ads they object to they won't distribute them to their clients. The 4D scans is a recent case in point. We can put these in our newsletters but UK office have decided not to take them in national publications becasue of midwife complaints.

RTKangaMummy · 10/06/2005 11:06

IMHO There is no problem with STEM CELL research

I wish I had done it for DS

Here is a quote from Ladymuck

Cells4Life wished to point out that it advocates blood collection after the third stage of labour is complete.

RTKangaMummy · 10/06/2005 11:07

Sorry meant quote from ladymuck's link
