Advertising - who would you be unhappy about

Hello, hello,
We wondered if you would mind giving us your two penneth on which companies are off limits as far as advertising is concerned. Ruling out obvious candidates like arms dealers and the BNP is there a concensus about anyone else? Would for example MacDonalds sponsoring the Food boards make people cross or would it be a case of why not let them spend some of their enormous mountain of profits keeping mumsnet afloat? Who's aloud and who isn't bascially... (thanks in advance .

Enid · 17/05/2005 15:50

those are ideas, not people who I would be unhappy about

Kayleigh · 17/05/2005 15:50

flamesparrow I'm sure they are "full of sugar and badness" as my boys love them. They are a once in a blue moon treat here. If humzingers taste anything like dried fruit my two won't go near them with a barge pole

Enid · 17/05/2005 15:50

burberry

flamesparrow · 17/05/2005 15:50

Oooh do they sponser too? I only regocnise them cos they're in bold at the top

I'm dreading the day that some git points out to DD (nearly 2) that raisins aren't sweeties like mummy tells her

Enid · 17/05/2005 15:50

oliveoil · 17/05/2005 15:52

Green and Black. But I think they have sold out to Cadbury and are now therefore the devil and doomed. Apparently.

Enid · 17/05/2005 15:52

yes they have sold out

flum · 17/05/2005 15:52

I would object to Kentucky Fried Chicken because of those dreadful television advertisments with people singing with their mouths full of food. It made me feel sick. Awful manners too. Wouldn't permit that at one of my kitchen suppers.

Enid · 17/05/2005 15:52

blooming marvellous

flamesparrow · 17/05/2005 15:52

I was replyin to Boden....

Sugar and badness is always good! I've never tried giving zingers to older kids, the only ones I've seen eat them have had them from a young age, so grow up liking the taste.

They look like a long skinny poo though, so I am slightly reluctant to try one myself

Enid · 17/05/2005 15:53

nick jr

Gomez · 17/05/2005 15:53

Okay I really need to buy some of these things they sound delightful (NOT)!

flamesparrow · 17/05/2005 15:54

Do you think I should try and get commission as I am obviously so good at selling them?

Kayleigh · 17/05/2005 15:58

PMSL @ flamesparrows long skinny poo IYKWIM

hub2dee · 17/05/2005 16:04

Perhaps 'latching on' to a published set of guidelines (NCT produces acceptable sponsors / advertisers) would be a good thing, avoiding endless 'is this or isn't this'.

NCT has quite sound (but restrictive) guidelines, maybe they could act as a baseline for MN tweaking...

Whilst 'hardcore' regular posters, with enough of a feel for the MN community, would understand how / why Mcdonalds was a sponsor, I am not sure it sits well on 'first glance' as it were... from new users / journos etc...

JustineMumsnet · 17/05/2005 16:11

Yes that's a thought Hub2hee but the NCT list is pretty restrictive I think... seem to remember they have Avent on there because they sell baby bottles, despite the fact they make the leading selling breastpump.

In my organisation the policy precludes any organisation that is being targetted in a campaign for human rights or other major causes - so nestle would be barred, barclays in the old days etc.
It also precludes anything which is obviously incompatible with our aims - but we work with a lot of young people so the parameters are different.

If the 1st time I encountered MN a big McD banner glared out at me, it would certainly have affected my impression of the site.

And I'm so fed up B King and their damn ad campaign peddling free Star Wars toys during Milkshake! that I would be likely to boycott anyone who was enabling them to have even more advetising muscle.

Enid · 17/05/2005 16:15

how about, you think of them, then run them past us first

Marina · 17/05/2005 16:17

Would definitely be unhappy about Nestle and McDonalds, Justine.
I think it is great that you are asking us but this is a hard topic to discuss without personal feelings intruding.

Marina · 17/05/2005 16:17

Definitely Burger King, Blu. Any fast food joint really.

WigWamBam · 17/05/2005 16:18

I don't really care who advertises, as long as they throw lots and lots of money MN's way. We don't have to buy the product, when all said and done.

bundle · 17/05/2005 16:20

wwb, wot even tobacco companies?? (not saying this would happen, but obviously we all have our lines in the sand..)
