Advertising - who would you be unhappy about

Hello, hello,
We wondered if you would mind giving us your two penneth on which companies are off limits as far as advertising is concerned. Ruling out obvious candidates like arms dealers and the BNP is there a concensus about anyone else? Would for example MacDonalds sponsoring the Food boards make people cross or would it be a case of why not let them spend some of their enormous mountain of profits keeping mumsnet afloat? Who's aloud and who isn't bascially... (thanks in advance .

I also have more than a slight suspicion that most people don't look at the ads on here, can't think of any likely candidates that would bother me except maybe some loan companies who are exploitative and gambling

Twiglett · 17/05/2005 15:38

well you can go back and tell them that the users of mumsnet are quite open to any advertiser but then again worry about the typical 'cause-related' big business issues but we'll probably buy nescafe anyway cos it tastes nice. And tell them not to get salted popcorn

and don't forget to bring a towel

flashingnose · 17/05/2005 15:39

Agree with twiglett

WideWebWitch · 17/05/2005 15:40

Oh ok thanks Justine. I have to say I wouldn't have even heard of Hmzingers if they didn't sponsor a topic here.
To those who say it doesn't matter, advertising works - if the advertisers didn't think it did they er, wouldn't do it!

flamesparrow · 17/05/2005 15:40

Hands up who can remember more than one sponser??

Enid · 17/05/2005 15:42

I bought Humzingers when I saw them in the supermarket because of seeing them on here

Gomez · 17/05/2005 15:42

Ah but www have you bought any? (And are they any good?)

Enid · 17/05/2005 15:42

yes the kids love them - a good sweet substitute

flamesparrow · 17/05/2005 15:43

I was buying them before, and they're great - dried fruit squished into a long round bar type thing, and rolled in some sort of powder to stop em being sticky.

Great for milk allergy people, and coeliacs too

Gomez · 17/05/2005 15:44

Fair enough Enid. What are they thou'?

Tinker · 17/05/2005 15:44

I would have a problem with McD's. Can't stand teh fact that hospitals have to put up with Ronald McDonald stuff in their childrens wards just cos McD donate.

Gomez · 17/05/2005 15:44

Thanks flamesparrow.

Kayleigh · 17/05/2005 15:44

They sound like fruit winders - are they a bit like them ?

flum · 17/05/2005 15:45

Can't believe you think arms dealers are worse than McDonalds.

....mutter, mutter, mutter

flamesparrow · 17/05/2005 15:46

Nope, nothing like winders

They are about the length of a pencil, and 1 1/2 - 2 times the circumference, and are more like the texture of dried apricots/raisins etc...

Gomez · 17/05/2005 15:46

I have never heard of fruit winders either - obviously I need more exposure to advertising and will henceforth spend more time on MN to meet this developmental need .

Sponge · 17/05/2005 15:47

Of course advertising works up to a point. It works to give people information about things they wouldn't otherwise know existed (like Humzingers) and to try and persuade us that these products/services are things we really should try/can't live without/will enhance our lives. However we still have a choice about whether to read or not and whether to buy or not. We're going to see these ads elsewhere after all - it's not like Mumsnet is our only exposure to the wicked outside world of marketing (well for most of us anyway) .

flamesparrow · 17/05/2005 15:47

Winders are a Kellogs thing... have a feeling they are full of sugar and "BADNESS" though

Never give em to DD cos they are just too bloody sticky - I'm rather partial to the odd one though

flamesparrow · 17/05/2005 15:48

Sooo.... someone not in charge tell me a sponser other than zingers... without looking first

Tinker · 17/05/2005 15:48

Winders are just jam stuck on paper

Gomez · 17/05/2005 15:48

boden

Enid · 17/05/2005 15:48

humzingers are basically dried fruit.

there's something to be said for kids eating ordinary dried fruit but these convince my kids that they are getting sweets
