Advertising - who would you be unhappy about

Hello, hello,
We wondered if you would mind giving us your two penneth on which companies are off limits as far as advertising is concerned. Ruling out obvious candidates like arms dealers and the BNP is there a concensus about anyone else? Would for example MacDonalds sponsoring the Food boards make people cross or would it be a case of why not let them spend some of their enormous mountain of profits keeping mumsnet afloat? Who's aloud and who isn't bascially... (thanks in advance .

well... i don't get why you think it's any dfferent to any other advert!

I can see a brochure for disneyland in any travel agents... but that doesn't mean they can't advertise here too!

tamum · 18/05/2005 19:07

It's different because it's illegal, for reasons Soupy explained further down the thread.

SoupDragon · 18/05/2005 19:07

Information about formula milks should be given by people who have some idea what they are talking about, not just "oh, I've seen their name on XXX so it must be OK". Yes, the information should be available but I don't think a banner advertisment on a website is appropriate.

starlover · 18/05/2005 19:08

i mean with regards to follow-on milk tamum...

hunkermunker · 18/05/2005 19:11

Follow-on milk isn't necessary. Infant formula does the job, follow-on milk was invented purely to get round the advertising ban.

If you want information/advice about the formulas out there, ask your midwife, GP or health visitor. After all, most of them know faff all about breastfeeding, so surely they're a mine of information about formula

starlover · 18/05/2005 19:32

lol hunkermunker

JulieF · 18/05/2005 20:50

Just to answer some of the questions that have been raised.

There are a lot of us on this site who feel that the advertising of follow on milks should be made illegal.

Firstly most of the current follow on ads make unjustified claims, like saying the extra iron is necessary. This can give some breastfeeding mums the impression they should switch after 6 months or worry their babies are not getting enough iron.

Also they deliberately use phrases like closer to nature to give the impression their product is as good as breastmilk.

They use follow on advertising to instill their brand name into new mums.

Information about formula, its risks and the differences between the brands should be given by healthcare professionals, not advertising.

hunkermunker · 18/05/2005 20:50

Totally agree, JulieF.

lemonice · 18/05/2005 21:03

frogs

jampots · 18/05/2005 21:11

For what its worth, my opinion is take the money from whoever is willing to part with it. Now if they were writing an article for MN that would be a different matter - I dont want to hear about healthy eating from MacD's etc.

JoolsToo · 18/05/2005 21:14

jampots · 18/05/2005 21:17

what have you had to drink woman ???

dabihp · 19/05/2005 08:20

So, how would you all feel about advertising for a site, whose products are similar to say - Anne Summers - of course tastefully done with discounts for mn's and created by a SAHM??

donnie · 19/05/2005 08:48

Any of Rupert Murdoch's companies
Any tobacco companies
Arms dealers
Pharmaceutical cos
fast food conglomerates
nestle
manchester united plc ( haha, sold down the swanny!!)
most of the others already mentioned

give some small independent preferably local-ish companies a chance! or support fairtrade and unicef.

donnie · 19/05/2005 08:51

several posters have mentioned an aversion to anti abortion groups. many of us here also feel equally hostile to advertising by pro-abortion groups too.

edhj69 · 19/05/2005 08:57

Any claims farmers (accident claims management firms)...MN already advertises solicitors which is fine and dandy as all are properly regulated by the law society but the claims management firms which are unregulated should be avoided like the plague.

Quite happy for pretty much anything else save those listed by donnie.

oliveoil · 19/05/2005 08:59

God yes agree with claims thing, "have you been injured in the last 3 years and it wasn't your fault? Am I annoying you with my clipboard?" aaaaarrrghhhhhh, they are all over the place

elliott · 19/05/2005 09:24

Just got accosted by the Disneyland pop-up. Now that's annoying.

Mud · 19/05/2005 09:26

elliot - that's only for a couple of weeks and will only happen once a visit - they told us about that before

Fio2 · 19/05/2005 09:27

the pop up one even got through my pop up blocker for a time I hate them

Chandra · 19/05/2005 10:55

Forget anything I have said of political propaganda. If pop ups start being used in mumsnet I'm off this site... I hate to take time to check thay are safe enough not to get a virus installed in your computer just because you inadvertedly clicked OK to close the window. Forget about how slow is to read a page by trying to get rid of them all the time

crunchie · 19/05/2005 11:24

Justine I sell ads on a regular basis (it is my full time job) However I may be able to help you. Not necessarily selling the ads, but perhaps helping you in some way. I'll email you more information.

BTW I love the idea of looking for smaller comapnies etc, but being negative the reason these comapnies are smaller is because they have v little money for advertising. So it does make sense to go to the big boys first and I have some contacts for them.
