What’s going on with the weird MNHQ bumbling?

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/10/2026 19:24

A couple of threads have been bumped by MNHQ specifically @FlissMumsnetor whatever the naming convention is. It’s early on, contentious and therefore clickbaity stuff.

Is this a new thing? It’s weird and frankly seems manipulative. Are MNHQ at least checking if these bumped threads are legit posters, because one seemed very suss.

Surely it’s up to the op which section they put their post. I’ve never known of mn to decide to move them before now.

I have, but they’ve told the OP first, and it’s usually a new poster who has posted for school advice in the baby name section or something equally obvious.

I thought that was a poor excuse myself 🤷‍♀️.

@BeckyAMumsnet The comment on the sensitive mental-health thread was also a separate mistake. Support information had already been posted there and it didn’t need another intervention from us.

Support information had already been posted twice, three weeks apart, by two different staff members.

It was three moderators though wasn’t it. Did they all ‘get the wrong end of the stick’?

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 19/10/2026 13:58

Also, this thread isn’t where it should be in active either. Are you stopping it from being in active?

Guess the AI writing that reply didn't pay attention to that bit. After all, it's hallucinating most of the rest of the post.

kittensinthekitchen · 19/10/2026 14:20

Maybe the person giving the instructions is handing out the wrong end of the stick to your moderator(s)?

Perhaps AI couuld draft an instruction, since 'human error' seems to be going rogue?

I think its reasonable (and useful) to offer to move a thread to a better topic - AIBU is so bloody dominant these days that new posters often think it is the site. Making better use of topics would help everyone.

Simply moving threads unilaterally is very different.

They could probably solve most problems on this site by getting rid of AIBU altogether.

I have chatted with Fliss by email before and I did not get any bot vibes! She was very helpful.

Same.

The mod on the two Health threads I saw was Becky A!

A surprising numer of gynecology threads are started in genealogy. Those could do with an auto-move script.

Same.

But an MN-controlled username could easily be used by both a person and a bot.

Anyusernamewilldo8963 · 19/10/2026 18:28

Anyone else not buying MNHQs replies? Why not just tell the truth instead of fobbing us off with a poor excuse? I've gone to comment on several threads the last few days and mostly stopped myself as I just don't trust the site/that the posts are real anymore

TheSunIsAlwaysThere · 19/10/2026 18:59

BeckyAMumsnet · 19/10/2026 08:47

Hi all - thanks for posting. It’s completely reasonable to have questions about the… bumbling.

We’re trialling something at the moment by moving threads that have been posted in the wrong topic, or giving them a bump if they haven’t received any replies after a few hours. Often, the lack of replies is because the thread is in the wrong topic. There’s nothing more exciting or nefarious going on.

On the thread you referenced, @MrsTerryPratchett,I’m not sure why that one was bumped, as it had only recently been posted. I think that was human error but we will look into it.

Don't believe that explanation at all. If you were moving to the right topic there's no need to bump it, just tell the OP privately.. or if you're insisting you have to post, then say just bumping this for you.

ThreeNewWords · 19/10/2026 18:59

Surely outright lies would be a reeeeaaaalllly odd business model. If they wanted to mislead us the safest strategy would be to say something vague and fobby-offy but not strictly and literally false. That's what every other business does.

kittensinthekitchen · 19/10/2026 20:00

BeckyA has spoken. I doubt anyone from MNHQ will bother coming back. They wont indulge the peasants.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/10/2026 20:13

OK Becky. Thanks for replying. I'm not entirely convinced the responses weren't at least AI assisted. I think MN has moved on from the kitchen table but not all the way to robots!

Several MNers are wondering if @bigred26 is either a bot or more likely from MNHQ. She / he starts a lot of threads inviting discussion, never gives her / his own views & never posts beyond the OP.

Chaarlene · Yesterday 09:59

bigred is harvesting MN for their own debating site. I've reported.

Fantastic that you are creating something to most threads to the appropriate topic.

Definitely not fantastic that you're posting to bump threads. Assuming they're in the right place, of course (which you're solving by moving them,) then if a thread hasn't had a reply it's because other posters either aren't interested or don't know what to say in reply. In which case it's surely down to the OP to bump their thread and ask more/explain what they want?

It's patronising in the extreme to assume that we need help with our threads/posts. In the same vein as using AI to help people write their thread titles.

We're grown ups here. Surely we can manage to deal with our own threads?

Voltorb · Yesterday 10:54

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has alerted MNHQ that they believe the aforementioned poster is not a genuine poster. However they've responded that the thread doesn't break talk guidelines so I guess they are happy to let that poster continue to post and never respond.

BIWI · Yesterday 10:57

I have also reported, for the same reason. Someone who just starts threads and doesn't then reply is definitely not genuine.
