New or split board request ( republican board )

jeffgoldblum · 06/08/2026 14:59

Dear mn it has become clear lately that it might be good if the royal family board could be split into royal chat and republican chat , it seems a lot of republicans don’t feel welcome and obviously other members are not enjoying having to field questions that are not the topic they are discussing.
I really believe that this would be a solution that could please everyone.

Ah - see you have edited. I’m glad that the explanation was ok for you.

Also being on a thread or not is up to you. It is indeed that simple.

I don’t go on some threads because I don’t care for either the subject matter or the opinion or something else I don’t want to be a part of.

It is always someone’s choice whether or not they stay on a thread. 🤷🏽

loveagift · 07/08/2026 14:39

I don’t understand what you want me to say @adragoncalledaudrey
As so said I explained myself & directed the question at Jeff who answered sufficiently. We can put it to bed now.

loveagift · 07/08/2026 14:40

Christ, I said I left the thread! 😆

adragoncalledaudrey · 07/08/2026 14:42

I was only replying to you. You hadn’t edited when I had started to respond. And you posted a quote I made.

Happy to put it to bed. Noted.

Not so happy to be told what to do and when to stop when you were the one @-ing me.

Christ.

Well I would disagree hence MNs starting a thread about the board.

Edited

Mumsnet deleted that thread because just like this one it was being used as an open opportunity to be derogatory to regular posters as per @HighFlying post above.

loveagift · 07/08/2026 14:32

It wasn’t one gif but lots & like I said it confused me. @adragoncalledaudreyI didn’t feel like I could ask so I just left the thread.

Either way Jeff’s explanation was sufficient.

Edited

And that was your choice, no one told you to leave.

Thankfully the derogatory and insulting post against regular posters has been deleted.

Where did I claim otherwise?

And this is why I wouldn’t have asked the question on the thread I previously referenced 😆

And also adding to my post above MNHQ didn’t just start a thread regarding the Royal board as if it was something special or needed looking at, those MNHQ threads were started on other boards too, it went down like a cup for cold sick on the Elderly Parents board as well.

You pretty much inferred it in your post and you said that others were chastised.

don’t even think I was chastised (I can’t remember) but others were. To me it was just a bit odd & very different to other threads/boards I have been on. It definitely put me off & it’s very hard to describe. It’s like there was this list of rules & in-jokes but myself & other posters didn’t know what they were or what they meant. I can completely see why MNs started that thread.

LifeIsTooShort247 · 07/08/2026 20:17

I thought I’d share my experience as a newcomer to Mumsnet. Having recently posted on the RF board, I hoped to discuss my views, but instead faced a pile-on over my username. I was questioned about why I chose it, why MN allowed it, and told to change it all because an established poster has a similar name.

When I explained I was brand new, I was told I should have spent time reading through old threads before registering. How is a new user supposed to know who long-term posters are or feel expected to jump through all these hoops just to join a forum? Even after clarifying, the pile-on continued. It wasn't a welcoming experience and made me step back from posting on that board.

That said, looking at the wider request here: I notice @LipglossAndLies has recently started a few threads where everyone is getting along well and having constructive chats. To me, that shows splitting the board isn't necessary it proves that posters with completely different views can have respectful dialogue together.

simpsonthecat · 07/08/2026 20:32

@LifeIsTooShort247

I'm sorry to hear that. Keep posting. Seriously. It's not all bad. Just keep on keeping on. I do.

TheHatTrick · 07/08/2026 22:07

@LifeIsTooShort247 It’s good to read your examples of threads where people you may normally disagree with are being polite and/or swerving the thread rather than attempting to disrupt derail and off-topic comments.

That’s behavior that we all hope for but cannot rely upon since there are poster who feel it’s their duty to interject, derail and correct others when it suits them.

Reading before posting is a suggestion online everywhere. In life, too. Take a look, see how things work. Read the room, so to speak. Choosing a username of a highly active poster can confuse other posters, so it’s not a surprise that others felt confused. Personally, I’d like to know if I’d chosen a name that might make it appear I’m mimicking someone else.

CariadDarling · 07/08/2026 22:08

@lifestooshortI remember when you joined the thread and whilst there were a few posts I thought were inappropriate regarding your posting nothing like what you’ve said below went on to the extent you’re claiming.

As for other threads - I don’t think it’s strange that you’re happy with the thread the other poster started as it was obvious from your first posts on the Meghan and Harry thread that you and lipgloss were very much kindred spirits on the subject.

eta - there was also the fact your username created some confusion as it was almost identical to a long term another posters and some posters were confused.

Indeed! I originally mistook one for the other since I’m terrible with user names.

adragoncalledaudrey · 07/08/2026 22:25

I don’t mean to nose, but I thought if your name was available then it was available? Can anyone really stop you taking a name if it is similar?

Sorry if you don’t want to answer.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 07/08/2026 22:27

@LifeIsTooShort247 It was incredibly confusing when you joined the thread on page 30 or so, the long term regular poster who had that name had to post that you were not her alter ego. Posters explained there was someone with that name already and although some posters may have been irritated with you, they were often replying in kind, the irritation wasn’t just one way. I think your representation of events on this thread has been a little unfair.

CariadDarling · 07/08/2026 22:33

@LifeIsTooShort247in the interest of fairness I had a look at one of the threads you’ve mentioned whilst suggesting everyone posting on it gets along well and the deletions on it would certainly suggest otherwise.

Yes I’ve just looked at one as well, a lot of deletions for a thread where everyone is supposed to be getting on well.

Thanks all - we’ve read through the thread and, if nothing else, we can confidently report that there is no consensus about what the problem is, never mind the solution. 😄

Some posters would like a separate space for discussions about republicanism, others think those conversations belong perfectly well alongside discussion of the royal family, and quite a few of you are understandably wary of creating separate camps or echo chambers.

We’ve also seen the wider concerns being raised about the atmosphere on some threads. Having looked at this, we think there’s an important distinction to make in that people disagreeing strongly with you, challenging your argument or simply having a very different posting style isn’t necessarily bullying or harassment. Mumsnet would be a considerably quieter place if disagreement itself were against the Talk guidelines.

That doesn’t mean anything goes and we can see we've moderated quite a number of posts on this board of late. Personal attacks, goading, deliberate derailment and other guideline breaches are still things we’ll moderate, regardless of which royal personage (if any) you favour.

What seems increasingly clear to us is that this isn't simply a neat divide between monarchists and republicans, or Meghan fans and non-Meghan fans. There are different opinions, different senses of humour and rather different ideas about how these threads should work, all occupying the same bit of Talk. We'd ask that you endeavour to stick to our long-held rules in the interests of keeping this board as a place where a wide variety of views are tolerated.

Thanks.

Many thanks @BeckyAMumsnet, for taking the time to consider my request and reading all the comments on the thread, your comments seem exceedingly fair and balanced.
