New or split board request ( republican board )

Dear mn it has become clear lately that it might be good if the royal family board could be split into royal chat and republican chat , it seems a lot of republicans don’t feel welcome and obviously other members are not enjoying having to field questions that are not the topic they are discussing.
I really believe that this would be a solution that could please everyone.

Wish people would present information correctly. I set up the lighthearted h&m thread because if I posted in other threads that Iliked something they did or something deemed as positive it was a pile on and I got called a sussex squad member, a h&m fan, accused of being on their payroll and quite frankly it was unpleasant and drove me away from wanting to say anything else. So yes i created a safe space..that thread so others who I have also seen subjected to same unpleasantness could just share our opinions without accusations or being labelled just because I don't share the same view or the same opinion as them.

Why should anyone be subjected to that?

I think a strictly Harry&Meghan section would be the way to go, and maybe hide it somewhere so you actively have to search for it?

No doubt this would be unpopular, but it is a niche group of posters who use it every day and doing that would free up the Royal/Monarchy board more.
Just a thought. Just my opinion.

If there is a republican board, it will probably be better to be named something else.

Have you ever seen the numerous times " what about Andrew?" has been posted on threads which have had nothing to do with him ? This is how threads going real life 🤷‍♀️

Should we have hidden boards for anything that I don't think merit it eg dogs, tv series, gardening etc ? That's not how things work.

Or maybe just rename the board Monarchy, so that it could encompass both? I'm not a big fan of echo chambers and I think the risk of splitting the board into two would have that result.

So my initial idea of splitting the board to be more welcoming to those who wish to discuss more republican ideas and issues, was not a good idea because it would be discriminatory and probably would be very slow without much footfall ? , instead posters are suggesting that we take the fastest moving and popular threads on the board away and hide them? , make them difficult to find? , discriminate against 80 percent of the posters on the rf board? , is that right?
honestly I’m trying to make sense of this suggestion, I really am trying to find away to view it , that makes it seem less like censorship.

You won't find a way JeffG. It was a daft suggestion that won't happen anyway. Not sure that it's 80% of RF posters, maybe you're right, no idea. That's a scary thought.

I’m very uncomfortable with anyone who suggests hiding a thread and making it difficult for others to find, just because it’s not to their personal liking.

If a thread is not to your liking MN provide a ‘hide thread’ function that individual posters can use.

I honestly don’t think there is such a thing as a safe space on the internet any more.

A discussion forum should be open to all opinions but within the subject matter would be helpful.

So if you create a thread about W&C for example, it can and should gain opinions from all that have one. Likewise with H&M.

What isn’t right in my opinion, in either case, would be shoe-horning that unsweaty creature in on either thread. Unless he is mentioned by either W&C or H&M (and let’s face it, that would be unlikely) then why?

I’m not for policing threads as a rule and I get meandering (so fair enough) but I have seen attempts to bring people into threads with no link or relevance to what was being spoken about. AMW seems to be used fairly frequently as a deflect or derail.

It disrupts the flow of what could be an interesting conversation.

But safe place? I’m not sure how that wouldn’t just be an echo chamber. 🤷🏽

Honestly for me personally, I’m extremely disappointed, I actually did read page after page of complaints on the draft thread on the rf board, i then actually thought about it from a different perspective and tried to think of something that would please everyone, now it seems that it wasn’t really about that at all , it was just another attempt at shutting down any and all criticism of h and m ! , I’m hoping that I’m interpreting this wrong, really I do ! , otherwise I wasted my time.

You would like a specific board for Harry and Meghan and for that board to be hidden? Some would say that is trying to shut everyone down just because you don’t want to see discussions on Harry and Meghan, there are subjects on here I don’t like, I don’t however suggest getting the boards taken down or made into a hidden sub section because I don’t like them, I don’t approve of censorship even if I don’t like the subject matter, I censor myself and don’t read or engage with subjects that upset me, mumsnet have a hide function so you personally can hide the threads, that decision shouldn’t be made by other posters on here.

Please note JeffG, it is only me who lightheartedly suggested seperating H&M threads and for them to be in a section on their own entitled Harry & Meghan.. You cannot say everyone says that.

Of course they are not going to be hidden! What I would like and what will happen, if anything, are poles apart.

It’s on the site section, the board mumsnet read so I don’t think anything posted here can be a joke.

If you do this you'd be better off calling it anti-monarchists or you'd get lots of right wing Americans really confused (and some left wing ones too). I really confused some Americans once by espousing left wing political views and claiming to be a Republican in the same conversation. But I don't think a board split is a very good idea because this is a public open forum and what you are asking for is that non-monarchists should be unwelcome to express opinions on royalty chat threads. I think this is the wrong forum for any thread where a particular (legal, not espouaing violence or hatred) opinion should be banned. There are plenty of closed members-only forum chatboards elsewhere on the internet where you can restrict posting to only be from pro-monarchists.

The reasonable grounds for having a separate board would be if there's a particular type if thread that it's so upsetting to see the thread titles of that you need to be able to hide a topic, or if there's a particular tyoe of thread that a significant number of people are genuinely interested in but which are difficult to otherwise filter for within a wider topic area. I don't think either of these apply.

Agree with all you have posted.

The words " safe space" have been used on a new thread this morning with various rules posted by the OP and an encouragement to report anyone who posts contrary to the guidelines. Is this an attempt to create a safe space or an echo chamber? What category would you report the person in ? Derailment ? Or " I just don't want them to talk about bit" or do we need a new category of " invading my safe space"?

Must we dumb everything down? Heaven forbid that our American visitors might have to learn the UK meaning of "republican". We could provide a dictionary definition at the top of the board if that helps.

Anyway, I think this topic ought to be fine on the Politics board.

I have loads of boards hidden, so the threads don't come up in my active. Including Royals, FWR, and anything & everything to do with babies and childcare as I'm past all that.
