What's this 'show more/show less' nonsense for?!

BIWI · Yesterday 15:01

It completely breaks up the flow of a thread.

Do you really think we haven't got the brain power to read a post that's longer than two paragraphs?!

OP posts:
BabblingBiddy · Yesterday 15:01

Its bloody irritating

BatshitCrazyWoman · Yesterday 15:02

Agree, really irritating.

DrSpartacularsMagnificentOctopus · Yesterday 15:05

It's awful. More clicking is crap for accessibility.

Can we have the option to opt in/out please?

Darragon · Yesterday 15:07

I’ve started a thread on this as well but I’m going to post here too as who knows which one MN will reply to. I don’t like it, it’s too short, I would really like it if it had a much longer limit to cut off the really long endless posts that people occasionally write (especially the ones that start with “I asked Chat GPT for you”)

Ineffable23 · Yesterday 15:08

Also super annoyed by it. How can you have an in depth conversation about complicated things - which is what I come to Mumsnet for, if you hide anything detailed anyone writes. If I wanted inane five word comments "amazing ❤️❤️❤️" then I would be on Instagram not Mumsnet.

ickky · Yesterday 15:08

Very Very annoying, please stop it.

ShipshapeShore · Yesterday 15:09

Also not a fan.

ickky · Yesterday 15:09

It is even doing it on one line posts when you @ a username.

Yes this is a fair point actually - it could cut off the longest 5% or 1% of posts or something without annoying me too intensely.

BIWI · Yesterday 15:11

I agree with @DrSpartacularsMagnificentOctopus - please can we have the option to switch it off?

But surely it's up to the reader to decide if they're going to read the whole thread, or to bail out when it becomes apparent it's a load of word salad?!

I don't need MNHQ to control what I'm reading.

Here to register my annoyance.

Why add a feature no-one asked for if you don't also add the option to turn it off?

It doesn't save any Mumsnet server time because the text is still sent and it is just bloody annoying.

CriticalCondition · Yesterday 15:15

Very annoying. I read faster than my thumb can move and it breaks the flow. Please stop it. Or give users an opt in if you must.

WallaceinAnderland · Yesterday 15:15

This is awful. It means you have to click on every single post.

Either remove or give us the option to disable it please MN.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · Yesterday 15:16

I’ve just noticed it and came her to see if anyone else was bothered by it. I don’t know if there are enough of us to make it go back to how it was before. I agree, it is really annoying. What purpose does it serve, anyway?

WinterAconite · Yesterday 15:18

I prefer it. It's simple enough to open it to read more. I also like that they've made it so you can read long threads where people have been quoting each other. It used to become unreadable as there was one letter per line.

PinkHairbrushClub · Yesterday 15:19

also here to ask if I can turn it off please. Or if it can only apply to the quoted parts of posts so we don’t end up scrolling really long quotes.

ETA I’ve just been in the ANL judgment thread and had to tap it for 3 posts in a row. All sensible, all not even that long really. Really broke the flow of reading so I’ve come away again

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · Yesterday 15:21

Hate it. Please make optional

HobgoblinNorFoulFiend · Yesterday 15:23

Yes, please make it optional. Hate it.

DappledThings · Yesterday 15:24

Another plea to make it optional. I just went into settings to see if the sensible decision had been made to introduce an option to turn it off when it was launched but of course there hasn't.

This isn't about quotes, it's about ordinary posts that are being arbitrarily determined as long.

When a thread has multiple lengthy posts it's very distracting and annoying to have to keep clicking 'show more' and is even worse for any of us with dexterity problems (my fingers are knackered thanks to inflammatory arthritis and this sort of thing exacerbates it).

EwwStew · Yesterday 15:25

Yep.

I absolutely hate it.

Recklessismymiddlename · Yesterday 15:26

Super annoying

crabbyoldbat · Yesterday 15:28

Fucking irritating. Get rid of it, or at the very least make it optional.

Any post that starts ‘I asked Chat GPT for you, OP …’ should end after ‘I asked’ with the option below to ‘Read Drivel’.
