Disabled private messages

Are pms disabled for everyone, or just me? Anyone know why?

I had no idea PMs had been disabled. I have tried to PM a couple of times and thought the person concerned had disabled it themselves. Why has there been no info on this?

I definitely feel that MN should have done a better job of keeping us all informed.
And if they decide not to reinstate private messaging, are there any other platforms that people would recommend?

Are you new to the internet? Is Mumsnet the only platform you use? I use a variety of places and they all have PM systems.

Well what an unhelpful post that is. You are basically saying:

I thought MN was meant to offer a supportive environment .

I have many different social media accounts however all are in my real name or at least a readily identifiable form of it. Posters might not feel comfortable sharing their identity with someone in order to continue communicating with each other

You could set up a random email account and post it on here asking for the poster to email you (giving some proof of being the poster from the PMs). They could also set up a random email account for the purpose. MNHQ could delete the post once contact made?

This is what I do - email account with no identifying features.

However, I would still only give that to someone I was comfortable communicating with, and indeed if I wasn’t, I wouldn’t communicate with them anyway. That said, it takes time to build any kind of trust or relationship. You just need to be careful.

I hope PMs are reinstated soon, or you all find ways to get back in touch.

If it has to be a choice between PMs without any links or no PMs on here at all, I'll take the former please - though I really hope it doesn't come to that.

I’ve suggested repeatedly that it shouldn’t be possible to disguise links using text. For instance, at the moment someone could write something like ‘What do you think of this M&S dress?’ & instead of being a link to the dress it could be a link to a porn site.

If it was only possible to show links as they are then it would be harder to trick people into clicking on them.

I've been on Twitter for a while but prefer MN for PMs. Twitter is not the same.

It would just be sad if we could no longer contact MN friends.

All the old private messages have disappeared too!

Has there been any recent update regarding PM's anywhere?

It's over 2 weeks now isn't it?

I'm expecting that PM's won't be back if they aren't reinstated tomorrow.

No update since last weekend when they said PMs should be back at the start of the (last) week. Absolute silence since.

I personally think they haven’t been able to find a way to prevent links being sent/hidden so haven’t been able to reinstate them because of the risk the perpetrators will just do the same thing again.

I can’t see how the testing they were supposedly doing has not been finalised by now. I don’t know. I hope that I’m wrong but I’m quite cynical these days.

@BeckyAMumsnet can we have an update? Is it possible to temporarily restore PM so people can swap details if they want to? Accepting that there is a risk.
