Are pms disabled for everyone, or just me? Anyone know why?

I didn't know the pm function was so popular. I think I've only intentionally used it once and don't need it or want it.

BeckyAMumsnet · 01/03/2025 17:25

Hi everyone - as you've noticed, PMs are still off. We are very much hoping they'll be back early next week and will post to let you know. We have added some measures that block links like this being sent, but we're doing a few more checks to ensure it's all working as it should. This is certainly an occasion where we'd prefer to err on the side of caution.

Thanks also for your other suggestions - we will discuss all points raised.

And me!
I am hoping that I will still be able to send links to Google photos in my PMs? How else am I going to find out what is wrong with my plants/share screen shots and other stuff.....?

@BeckyAMumsnet I hope so! I'm hoping to send someone some names of medical contact which I don't want to make public.

@unexpecteddrivinginstructor missing being able to PM you!

Yes will hopefully catch up soon.

AnotherDayAnotherIdea · 05/03/2025 14:48

I want to read one of my old PMs. It had a link to something important (government admin) that I need to do for my kids!

KorneliyaSky · 06/03/2025 08:49

Any news please? @BeckyAMumsnet

ScottBakula · 06/03/2025 08:59

I didnt realise how much I'd miss pms until they'd gone !

But I would much rather they were disabled until mn have gone through everything with a very fine tooth comb to ensure it doesn't happen again.

MaeDaymon · 06/03/2025 15:17

Is there an update (date?) on the PM's being reinstated?

AlexandrinaH · 06/03/2025 17:03

How could they stop links being sent in PMs though? Is there a way to do that?

I think the suggestion of having to make so many public posts before being able to use PMs is a really good one, and may weed out all but the most determined troublemakers.

AnneKipankitoo · 06/03/2025 19:35

Maybe DO NOT OPEN LINKS!

Canipickmyselfup · 06/03/2025 19:44

@AnneKipankitoo i think in some instances for example photos they were loading automatically hence so many people being impacted

everywhichway · 06/03/2025 19:55

I only open links in PMs if they're from people I've known and communicated with on here for several months or years - or from someone who has an established posting history that I've checked out first. If they've regularly contributed to threads on topics such as holidays, gardening, parking, neighbour disputes, parenting or suchlike, then I'd generally regard the link as safe to open.

Did they open without clicking on links @Canipickmyselfup ?

noblegiraffe · 06/03/2025 20:24

Not in PMs, the affected poster opened a link. You can’t send photos via PM.

I thought that was why private messaging was disabled.

noblegiraffe · 06/03/2025 20:27

Because someone was sending links to child abuse photos via PM, not that they were sending photos.
