Can we have some sort of 'warning' for people who repeatedly post without reading all of OP's posts?

In the last 3 months or so I think this has gotten so much worse. Not only does it fill up the thread with pointless posts that have been addressed (sometimes days or weeks beforehand), it can actually be quite horrible - in one case a woman being slagged off because a few posters didn't read her sympathetic circumstances.

Could there be a 'report' reason just for this, and perhaps the posts don't need to be removed (but they could be?) but the user asked to 'see all' of OP's posts in future and shown how to do it? And repeat offenders suspended....?!

Or could it even be a note before posting if you go straight to post on a page where you couldn't possibly have read all of OP's posts?

I know it's easy to do, and obviously sometimes OP will update while people are in the process of typing and posting or they haven't refreshed. But when it keeps happening it's really frustrating on a thread and good helpful posts get missed in all the 'OP has actually updated to say this' 'well how was I supposed to know' derails.

'Cancel the cheque!!!' is still as much of an issue now as it was back then!

We used to manage with the browser version for years before filtering to see just the OPs comments was introduced. It's a very useful convenience but not a necessity.
I use the iOS apps on phone and iPad - they do have filtering but don't have various other features. I prefer it because it's more readable (less clutter, more space for larger text is useful as one becomes longsighted!). If I need something that's not in the app, I just switch to the browser...not exactly difficult.

Maybe I'm just a dinosaur, but I tend to find that many sites are better in the browser than in the app.

It seems to me that it's just the assumed 'done thing' that everything has to be in an app, even if it's not at all the most practical way.

It kind of reminds me of the very early days of the Internet, where small businesses were urged that they simply must have a website.

Thus they would have their premium display advert in the Yellow Pages, alongside their address and phone number - and a great big highlighted bit screaming "VISIT OUR WEBSITE!!!"... and on their website, you would only find their address and phone number and no other info whatsoever Grin

Oh, I know what you mean, @FizzyBisto . I used the browser for years, and have no problem returning to it for the things the app can't do.

(Tbh if there was a command line version that'd probably suit me fineGrin)

But for just reading and posting, the iOS app does what I want without extraneous clutter, just the bits I want most of the time.

It's happening again, repeatedly, on a thread where MN have added to the thread title a specific request to read all of OPs posts, and there are STILL people wittering on about getting appointments.

Honestly, how self- centred do you need to be to come onto a thread where someone's worried about their child and just talk all over them without even bothering to look at single other post?

Is it genuine idiocy or do people actually not know how discussion threads work?

This is never going to happen, but I think the reply box shouldn’t appear until a user has at least viewed all the OP’s posts.

Anyone who responds to the first post on a thread with 100 or more posts in it risks making themselves look like an idiot. Unless it’s one of those ‘What have you got in your handbag?’ or ‘What’s your favourite name?’ type threads.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/02/2025 08:20

Sometimes it's not the OPs posts which get vast numbers of replies - a hapless poster early on this thread has hopefully worked out how to turn off notifications by now.

To wonder why.. (brace yourself) http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/5281522-to-wonder-why-brace-yourself

I wonder if it'd be possible to display a counter of how many times a post has already been quoted and if that would deter these people who read the first few posts of an already long thread and feel compelled to reply with the same thing as dozens of others.

BIWI · 28/02/2025 08:22

Link doesn't work and/or that thread has been deleted @ErrolTheDragon

NameChangedOfc · 28/02/2025 08:25

I agree (and I'm one of those who more often that I'd like to admit sometimes posts without having read the whole thread 😬)

ErrolTheDragon · 28/02/2025 08:27

Odd... the thread is there and I use the share button then copy from the app in the usual way. A small bug I think.

offmynut · 28/02/2025 09:00

Some post are so long i dont read all of it.
I scan read then go to the comments.
Other times i cant make heads or tails out of a post.

Why comment, though, if you can’t be bothered to read and understand at least OP’s posts?

Again sometimes this is relevant to do for example where there's been a long thread and you are referring to something in the OP.

Then just copy and paste the bit you’re quoting?

put it in bold

I agree - why bother? Just go and find a shorter post to read. You don’t HAVE to comment on a thread.

I love this!
Or maybe a reply box that just doesn't post to the thread and just gets filed in the special filing cabinet... 🗑

I wanted to add a comment.
Its not against talk guide lines.

HyggeTygge · 28/02/2025 09:41

I think this sums up the whole problem. "I wanted to comment for the sake of feeling like I'd said something, despite having no idea if it was informed, helpful, or relevant".

A tad bit dramatic

The Android App still doesn't have the See All or Next function, so not everyone can do this. (Not that I'm a guilty party, as I use a Web page to view MN for this and the voting function, which I assume is also still missing.)

On this point alone - if you're on an Android device and you're using the MN App, just stop.

Use whatever browser you have on your device and access MN that way.

Until MN put some genuine money behind developing and updating the app, using a browser on a remote device (phone/tablet) it really is the only way to access the site. The app strips out so much functionality it's crazy.

I am speaking from experience here. I had the app on my iPhone and I've uninstalled it and when I'm out, I'd access the site via the browser on my phone.

HorrorFan81 · 28/02/2025 10:50

I had to delete the MN app from my android device for this reason - you couldn't 'see all' and my phone wouldn't let me get on the desktop if the app was installed - just kept defaulting to the app. It's annoying they can't be bothered to invest in it given so many people use Android

But yes OP, quoting the first post and / or not reading the updates is so irritating
