Can we have some sort of 'warning' for people who repeatedly post without reading all of OP's posts?

HyggeTygge · 02/01/2025 11:25

In the last 3 months or so I think this has gotten so much worse. Not only does it fill up the thread with pointless posts that have been addressed (sometimes days or weeks beforehand), it can actually be quite horrible - in one case a woman being slagged off because a few posters didn't read her sympathetic circumstances.

Could there be a 'report' reason just for this, and perhaps the posts don't need to be removed (but they could be?) but the user asked to 'see all' of OP's posts in future and shown how to do it? And repeat offenders suspended....?!

Or could it even be a note before posting if you go straight to post on a page where you couldn't possibly have read all of OP's posts?

I know it's easy to do, and obviously sometimes OP will update while people are in the process of typing and posting or they haven't refreshed. But when it keeps happening it's really frustrating on a thread and good helpful posts get missed in all the 'OP has actually updated to say this' 'well how was I supposed to know' derails.

'Cancel the cheque!!!' is still as much of an issue now as it was back then!

OP posts:

I've just come away from a thread where the OP had originally been incredibly unreasonable in a situation with her SIL. She was faced with a barrage of very blunt responses in her thread, but instead of running away and saying 'you're all horrible' she actually listened, found it hard, but reflected, recognised where her behaviour had come from, was mortified, and has done a U turn and apologised to the family member.

However she's still having to face posts from people who haven't bothered reading beyond the OP and are continuing to berate her. It's all so unnecessary.

Edited

I don't know the thread you're referring to, but if it's an "Am I Being Unreasonable" then in my mind the point of that board is judgementalism. You tell people what you've done in your initial post and they tell you if they think it's unreasonable. It's pretty binary, there are even a YABU/YANBU vote. I don't usually read all the replies and follow ups. I judge! The poster needs to include all relevant information.

If the poster wants more of a counselling session, with nuances and alternatives being thoughtfully explored then they should probably post on a different board.

Cancel the cheque.

Fnar fnar fnar...

What does fnar fnar fnar mean?

Well yes; but if the poster is fairly new to MN they may not understand how to choose a specific board.

Also, some people are really very poor with technology. On many occasions, I see people asking if a previous thread can be linked. They are incapable of using AS and finding it themselves - or an OP who has started a second thread about something asks someone to link her previous thread, because she doesn't knew how to herself.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 03/01/2025 11:01

I've noticed that when I mention to someone that there was no need to quote the opening post, they get very defensive.
Some people even respond with "well, how else do I answer?" - which just demonstrates an unfortunate lack of comprehension.

I'm trying very hard not to get annoyed about it.

🤣🤣

By different board I think they mean different site - ie, not Mumsnet.

No, I often see people advising posters to ask MN to move particular threads to Relationships, Special Needs Children or Legal (for example).

It's to get their threads off the bearpit which is AIBU.

One more thing which infuriates me is when posters fail to quote the person to whom they're replying.

Yes. Particularly if they don't tag the person. Although in slow moving threads it's not such a big deal.

Christ.

Look dudes, this isn't a nursery. You're not going to get your hand held and nor can you police how other people use this site.

Years people whinged for a quote button. Now we've got one there's still whinging. Years people whinged for a like button, now we've got one it's not enough. There should be something to show disapproval as well. Go to Reddit if you want Reddit.

Mumsnet isn't moderated, it's never been moderated. Just scroll on by if something irritates you. Report posts that break the sites T&C's...

It's not hard.

I wish they would take the quote button away again me. Much simpler to copy/paste/bold.

Only if you're technically capable of doing so.

I'd happily walk everyone who needs it through it if I never see another complaint about someone quoting the OP. GrinIt just doesn't matter.

Mumsnet is very heavily moderated. One of the most if not most heavily moderated forum on the internet. Infamously so.

BIWI · 03/01/2025 12:48

Mumsnet isn't heavily moderated. And when it is, it's only post-moderated, i.e. when a post or thread has been reported. And even then, a report doesn't necessarily lead to a deletion.

I dunno - I think people should be able to type anything they want on the internet. You don't need to have completed a tutorial to access Mumsnet - and you shouldn't have to. New posters ought to be able to make mistakes without getting reprimanded (or banning threatened!).

Also I don't think people should be banned unless they write stuff that is highly offensive.

Guilty as charged, public shaming maybe?

It's quite heavily moderated in some ways. I once got deleted (under an old name) for being disablist. I think I was writing something about my autistic DS and it was obviously in no way disablist. Even having written "autistic DS", I expect someone will want me to write "DS with autism".

It absolutely isn't.

Posts are only considered for deletion if they've been reported by someone.

Even then, they're not always deleted.

And the criteria for deletion is ever-shifting.

I think it might sometimes depend on which moderator receives the report, too.

This is a difference of opinion between you and the moderator.

That doesn't mean this site is heavily moderated?

Whilst I don't think you should have to "complete a tutorial" to use MN, I do wish new posters would spend a little time learning the posting convention here. When i first joined we couldn't @ people or quote. I learned to copy/paste and bold/italics names and quoted comments. I realised that DS7 meant 7th son and DS(7) meant 7 year old son.

Sometimes now someone will post DS7 leaving 7 year old and it takes me a moment to realise they dont have 7 children yet somehow this is the first time they've come across whatever the issue is.

HyggeTygge · 03/01/2025 17:40

I dunno - I think people should be able to type anything they want on the internet.

Perhaps, but if all the people that wanted to post spam on here were allowed to, most people would stop reading MN.

There is a sweet spot where people are able to have a productive discussion without the exact same argument breaking out in every thread that gets past 25 posts. That's presumably why trollhunting is banned. If every thread got filled up with 'this sounds made up' 'no it doesn't' 'yes it does' 'prove it then' 'no you prove it', no-one would spend any time on here.

The Talk Guidelines aren't difficult to understand. It's common internet etiquette to learn the general ways of the place you're posting in - people are mostly sympathetic if it's not obvious but if it's happening all the time then perhaps something could change to help.

I’d like to be able to partially quote rather than copying / pasting the bit I’m replying to in a longer post

But surely you'd then have to highlight the bit you want to quote?

Once you've already gone to the effort of highlighting your focused-on part, pressing paste is the easy bit!
