Hating the "Load older posts" feature

No one asked for it, and if they did, this isn't what they want.

There isn't enough space in this box to explain how incredibly poor it is.

There's unlimited space to explain, just keep typing.

i agree though it's just annoying & pointless as it is. The threads I've had it on have been new threads with very few posts.

Hi OP

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We'll keep a close eye on your thoughts about this new feature. It would be good to know how you access Mumsnet (device and browser).

ImaginaryHorse · 21/11/2024 15:35

I hate it too. Good idea on bookmarked threads but otherwise it just adds to the existing issue of people not bothering to read the thread before blundering in with their Very Important But Irrelevant Thoughts!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/11/2024 16:06

It is awful. What on earth is the point of it on a thread with just a few posts? I want to see the full thread, not just the last one or two posts and the OP. That's what we had for the many, many years I've been on MN. What's the reason for making this change?

KatyMumsnet · 21/11/2024 16:15

Thanks for the feedback on the recent updates! I wanted to take a moment to address some of the points raised and share what we’re working on.

We’ve introduced infinite scroll as a new way to navigate through threads. Instead of loading all posts at once, posts will now load dynamically as you scroll. This approach helps to prevent slow loading times and potential crashes that can occur with large threads.

For users accessing threads via bookmarks, notifications, or direct links, you’ll see a ‘load older posts’ button. This is to avoid the thread jumping around when landing on a specific point. For those visiting a thread for the first time, all posts will still load as usual.

We’re rolling out an update tomorrow morning that will load some earlier posts above the direct link you clicked when you land mid-thread. We’re hopeful this will make navigation smoother, and we’d love to hear your thoughts once the change goes live.

Additionally, we’ve already resolved the issues with the OP post colour and voting settings. We’re also addressing the issue where the ‘load older posts’ button appears incorrectly, and this should be fixed shortly.

Rest assured, we’re keeping an eye on all other reported issues and prioritising fixes as quickly as possible.

Thank you again for your patience and input—it’s incredibly valuable as we refine the experience. I’ll keep you updated as things progress, and please keep sharing your feedback!

I'm accessing MN on my laptop and really find this feature irritating!

SerendipityJane · 21/11/2024 16:37

You really can't polish a turd.

If you are hiding some posts (bearing in mind my settings are to "load the whole thread") then it's hard to see where you left the conversation.

A really good idea before diving in with someones "wouldn't it be great if ..." idea from the morning huddle, is to understand what problem you are trying to solve.

There is a reason why people like me cost a lot of money. And that is because we are very good at stopping the bright idea brigade from cutting their toenails with a scythe.

Frankly this is the sort of nonsense I can see an AI review of the site suggesting when the grown ups were out.

E2A. If you really have to have this feature to stop someone from crying all day, then at least a tweak so after the first "Load Older Thread" you get the option to "Load the whole sodding thread" rather than play clickety click to get back to where you think you were.

There's no need for it, if anyone needs it, it should be an opt-in feature.
I have chosen to view all replies to a thread on one page, so I don't need to load older ones, I selected to see them all already.
(Website, on a phone)

notworthanything · 21/11/2024 16:55

I can't even put into words how shit this feature is. I can't even access the Christmas bargains thread as I try to go to bottom (most recent) posts (because the whole point is current bargains!) and yet I have to press "load newer posts" a billion times despite my settings being "show all posts".

Honestly so irritating that the website keeps being "fixed" but you're just making it unusable.

Sparklfairy · 21/11/2024 16:55

I hate it too. Could you at least add the ability within settings to switch it off? You've implemented this yet kept the setting for how many messages we want to see on a page - I've got mine set to all but the new feature overrides it! What's the point?

BertieBotts · 21/11/2024 17:00

Oh yes please make it a toggle! I find pages works quite well enough for not causing threads to crash. I hate endless scroll and usually turn it off on other sites.

Plus, I quite frequently scroll back and forth while composing a reply - that's just going to be impossible, isn't it??

greengreyblue · 21/11/2024 17:01

Me too!

SerendipityJane · 21/11/2024 17:02

With a reply as long as the one MNHQ have posted, looks like this feature is here to stay.

A/B testing ? "Who's Abbey ?" 😮

I hate it too.

Passionately.

It has a very negative impact on reading threads.

I am on apple laptop.

YellowAsteroid · 21/11/2024 17:05

Can we turn it off? I hate it. It's clunky and if I'm catching up on a thread (multishirking at work) it takes ages to load & I can't skim read through a thread.

EmeraldRoulette · 21/11/2024 17:07

Is this on the app? I don't think I have it but using a browser.

YellowAsteroid · 21/11/2024 17:08

No! it still means I have to click endlessly to load posts if I'm going from "Threads I'm On' to catch up.

I'm accessing from a laptop or my phone. It's even more annoying on my phone.

At least give us an option in our settings to Turn.It.Off

betterangels · 21/11/2024 17:09

Let us turn it off. It is really so annoying.

Samsung phone and Windows 11 laptop.

I can't tell you how much I love this post. Spot on.

Grecianrainbow · 21/11/2024 17:13

I hate it. Especially on my watched threads- it doesn’t go to the last post read anymore!

wisewomanmummy · 21/11/2024 17:13

I hate it too, I want to be able to scroll up and down and check replies without faffing about.

Is this code for "it's so rubbish that we are having to correct it within 24 hours".

Make it go away MNHQ. It was fine before you messed with it.

After8Mints · 21/11/2024 17:19

I selected the whole thread option to be able to save the thread on laptop (ctrl s, then save as mht on internet explorer or opera) as too many times start reading a thread and then browser refreshes and then its been withdrawn or deleted etc

with the new click method , may as well set it to 100 comments per page.
