@ the backwards one!!!

I have never read any MS stuff

LittleBella · 24/04/2008 09:59

I read a couple, but the only one whose title I can remember was called Bestfeeding.

It was very important the cultural discussion in both books and bits about how little knowledge there is in our culturea even among medical professionals. When I actually read the books, I assumed this was out of date and didn't take much notice of it, but when I had my ds and my first piece of advice was undermining of breastfeeding, I instantly recognised that this was a woman I should not be asking advice from, which I would not have realised if I hadn't read the books. They were really, really important for me.

moondog · 24/04/2008 10:06

Very gratifying to see lots of people take note of this.In particular the big cheeses.

No,of course MN can't ban anyone who has at some time been connected with something dodgy. You'd never see me and just about everyone else here ever again in that case. Who would remain? Probably Tiktok,Mears and er....... that's it.

I think though that most of us see that breastfeeding is a unique case and that the use of greedy public figures who actually know feck all about what they are accepting big fat cheques for is beyond te pale.

Furthermore,MS conditioned me to believe that being pregnant means you must instantly start wearing large floral sacks and for that I shall never forgive her.

Hillary Flowers' 'Adventures in Tandem Nusing' is a fab bfing book, but I suppose it's targeted at those who have already successfully established bf.

MNHQ's publisher will make decisions on projected sales figures and nothing else (unless MNHQ have managed to negotiate a killer contract). I guess bfing books just don't have the sales projections of recipe books. If the book project provides financial support that enables MN to continue to operate an ethical ads policy then that's alright with me.

I think Justine's posts are eminently reasonable, and I'm impressed by MNHQ's ads policy

I think targetting Miriam StoppitforGod'sSake is a better use of our time than haranguing Justine. (Not that haranguing Justine isn't fun.)

MP, My sister gave me an old falling to pieces edition of NCT's breastfeeding book. i found it really useful especially when my MIL was telling me how her milk 'just dried up one day' or that I should drink lots of milk. My health visitors were being too careful to not put pressure on me but I interpretted this as lack of support that I wanted to BF my initially tubefed baby.
The book plus my sister's advice really helped. Admittedly, I didn't know mumsnet existed back then which i'm sure would have been fantastic.
Where were you all when i really needed you????

moondog · 24/04/2008 10:33

Am liking her new moniker Policy.

Any doctor who takes drug company cash to promote their products loses any credibility they might have had.

I don't like nestle, but my objections to Dr. Stoppard's advert are based on her whoring out her title for cash.

good god, MN can't do anything right can they

not everyone is against Nestle
not everyone is into reading about breastfeeding
not everyone is bothered about formula advertising

I could go on

this site is for 1000's of people, not a select few who feel they can decree how everyone else should think or feel

harrumph"

Couldn't put it better myself.

I really feel for HQ over this, as I did over the whole Vicky Thingy business.
I am very proud of MN for the stance they have taken over certain issues. Just because it's not quite enough for a few (a very vocal few) doesn't mean it's not enough.
Also, I feel that most people with 'moderate' views on BF issues tend to stay away from the topic because, well, it's draining, so often it can seem that those who shout the loudest are representative of general opinion. Glad to see alternative views being aired on this thread.

Oliveoil · 24/04/2008 11:43

SheikYerbouti · 24/04/2008 11:54

I'm in the OO and JV camp, me

Not that it's about taking sides.

I don;t care whose dirty money MN takes. To me, the most important thing is that it runs as a FREE resource for woman in need of support at the most vulnerable time of their lives.

I am v pro breastfeeding. BUT, if MN chooses to boycott all of the companies/personalities ever associated with Nestle and its offshoots, there's BE no Mumsnet.

WinkyWinkola · 24/04/2008 12:26

How can you not be against Nestle though knowing what they get up to?

SheikYerbouti · 24/04/2008 12:44

I am not a Nestle supporter.

My point is that NO big corporation is whiter than white. If we avoiided all of them, and thier offshoot comapies, there would be NO MN.

I dont think MN are getting a particularly hard time.

It's also tiring to hear the same old twaddle trotted out about the "vocal few" pro-breastfeeders ruining it for everyone else. There are plenty of vocal people who constantly perpetuate bollox about infant feeding, but get away with it, because, bless them, they can't help their ignorance

There needs to be much more accurate info on infant feeding out there, MN has the resources and support of many many people to help do this, and at the moment they arent.

They are involved in a campaign re care surrounding miscarriages (and I'm really pleased about that, dont get me wrong). They have been asked to write 6 books. I dont think it's unreasonable to be disappointed that infant feeding hasn't been put higher on the list of ones being written out, since I put quite a bit of time of mine into this site and it's a subject I feel passionate about. I'm not suggesting other people's ideas override mine, just that I am as entitled to anyone else to voice it. This is my mumsnet I'm talking about after all - MNHQ can worry about keeping happy the thousands of others .

For someone who doesnt care about breastfeeding/nestle/formula etc you dont have spend a lot of time popping on threads to say you dont care OO. I think you doth protest too much

I really do think MNHQ could easily remove all advertising for Nestle subsidiaries. If they choose not to, they are perfectly entitled to do so - it's their website. It doesnt stop me being disappointed about it. It also doesnt mean I'm not pleased that they dont run ads for formula. I just think one step further really wouldnt hurt their pocket. At all. There'll always be another company in line wanting to have their ads plastered all over a website that attracts thousands of people every day, and hundreds of thousands of visitors every month.

Twiglett · 24/04/2008 13:20

sometimes this site feels like you're back at uni with socialist workers giving you the evil eye for daring to go to the bar for a drink rather than signing up to one of their futile attempts to change the world .. eh vive la revolution

I absolutely detest socialist workers activists btw

VeniVidiVickiQV · 24/04/2008 13:24

Sometimes it feels like this website is full of people with a great many opinions about not an awful lot - including about how much they dont care.

I think that's rather pointless, btw.

LittleBella · 24/04/2008 13:25

"not everyone is against nestle"

So who is in favour of them then? Apart from their executives and shareholders, I mean?

Oliveoil · 24/04/2008 13:25

is that vvvdq or hunker?

as you are coming across as hunker atm
