Virus scam appearing only when on Mumsnet

Just wondering if anyone else has had this?
As in the title I'm getting frequent "warnings", supposedly from McAfee, claiming I've got various viruses and inviting me to click a link (not done of course)

I don't use McAfee anyway and they're not from them - their site has images of a common scam which matches these - but it only happens when I'm clicked onto Mumsnet

Anyone know what's happening by any chance?

I had this yesterday. I do have McAfee, but obviously didn't click on any pop up link. I didn't keep it open long enough to note any url. I ran a scan and all was clear.

Windows 11, Edge browser.

MissRoseDurward · 17/12/2024 16:02

And just had it again. Same device.

Coming back to add a screenshot of another one that just popped up.

Just had this twice in about a minute. It really is most tiresome.

bigdecisionstomake · 17/12/2024 16:35

I've suddenly had this twice today. Is it something wrong with the site, I'm not getting it on any other websites and I don't have McAfee?

IwantToRetire · 17/12/2024 17:02

I've just had it on a thread about the WASPI women decision.

And then again when scrolling to the end of this thread!

Same phoney URL as before pcsy3hx1 dot online.

Still think mumsnet should make a formal complaint to those who register these obviously dodgy web adresses and also the hosting company that allows them to peddle this.

pointythings · 17/12/2024 18:50

Happened again just now. Come on, @MNHQ ! Same URL as post above mine. Chrome on Windows 11 laptop.

TeaandHobnobs · 18/12/2024 12:45

Just happened again, this time from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5232873-how-soon-should-i-make-this-journey-after-birth

Have had this a few times over the last weeks, using Chrome on my laptop. Most recently on this thread.

I've not had the scam/ad/virus thing for a couple of days now, but checking my spam folder on my emails I notice that I've had an email allegedly from Mcaffee thanking me for 'renewing my subscription.' Which I haven't done, obviously, and neither has any money gone from my bank, but I just thought I'd mention it in case there's a link.

PandoraSox · 18/12/2024 14:33

I keep getting it still.

LilyRose88 · 18/12/2024 15:05

I keep getting the same message. It started a couple of days ago. I am using Microsoft Edge. It's really annoying!

TheITCrowded · 18/12/2024 16:02

It's getting worse 👀

museumum · 18/12/2024 16:11

The image on @TeaandHobnobs post is exactly the same as I'm getting on my windows laptop in chrome. I have to close the browser entirely to get rid of it.

StrongFemaleCharacter · 18/12/2024 17:10

Not sure if it's connected but my anti-virus software just blocked a link with the reason given as "phishing":

I'm still getting this and it's pissing me right off.

Hi all,

Thanks to everyone who's posted about these pop-ups, and for all of the screenshots.

We've been informed that this is a security issue across multiple publishers. The company's security team is on the case and working to resolve this, so we'll let you know as soon as we've had an update from them.

In the meantime we're really sorry for all the disruption this is causing.

MissConductUS · 18/12/2024 18:15

Google "browser high jack".

You'll have to clear your cache and cookies to get rid of it.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 18/12/2024 18:22

is this related? I'm getting this too.

Yes, but whoever is doing this is registering new domain names every few days.

One thing we could all do is report these web sites (just the main part of the URL not the long string of letters after) to https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/collection/phishing-scams/report-scam-website

Report a scam website

Two and a half months.
No sign of a fix. And you haven't even put out a warning to alert users that this problem exists, to be aware if it, and to not be phished into putting payment details into a "Renew License" scam.

Mumsnet doesn't really care about the online safety of it's users, does it? Just as long as the ad revenue keeps coming in.

Well I suspect that mumsnet does care, but it seems to suggest the tech team, and the other multiple publishers, aren't as tech savvy as their salaries or contract fees would suggest!

If this was a common problem, you would expect nearly every web site with ads suffering from this. eg I read quite a few different newspaper web sites, many of which rely of advertising to cover their costs. Cant think that it has ever happened on one of them.

IwantToRetire · 18/12/2024 19:01

Forgot to post that a short while ago I had the same virus scam, same url when looking through list of notifications.

This is what's always stood out to me too, @IwantToRetire
I get that MN's a big site and is probably seen as worth targeting, but so are others and the fact they seem to cope without this sort of thing disrupting them is very noticeable
