Virus scam appearing only when on Mumsnet

Just wondering if anyone else has had this?
As in the title I'm getting frequent "warnings", supposedly from McAfee, claiming I've got various viruses and inviting me to click a link (not done of course)

I don't use McAfee anyway and they're not from them - their site has images of a common scam which matches these - but it only happens when I'm clicked onto Mumsnet

Anyone know what's happening by any chance?

I am not sure if this belongs here or the one about massive ads.

Was scrolling through notifications. Then without actually freezing the page became really slow and then suddenly I was directed to a huge ad for ... not sure what. Was so p'd off that I just closed by browser down.

It's all just getting too annoying.

not only the terrible virus scam, but the notifications not even working properly, and now the web site being slowed done by hijacking ads.

And what is bad (not sure if its just me) that it all makes me so bad tempered that when I do get on a thread, I suspect I am bit OTT about something that deserves quiet and thoughtful comment.

Can I claim compensation for having a facility causing me distress?! Grin

TheITCrowded · 23/12/2024 23:43

Still not fixed then 👀

IwantToRetire · 24/12/2024 01:46

Just had it again exactly the same but this time via yet another newly set up web link

63btvlfe dot mom

Register a few days ago, and as before with contact details blocked.

The all seem to have been registed via dynadot dot com

There is a report abuse email address: abuse @ dynadot dot com

IwantToRetire · 28/12/2024 23:27

Happened again while scrolling through notifications.

Same dot.mom url as previously posted.

Wouldn't it be nice to start the New Year with everything sorted and no more hoax virus redirections.

Continually still happening here - I've just realised that it's been happening when I'm not logged in to Mumsnet just browsing, but has just happened now when I'm logged in too.

JoMumsnet · 03/01/2025 14:52

Thanks @IwantToRetire and @Vroomfondleswaistcoat - we're taking another look into this and will be back with an update as soon as possible.

Thanks - have not had so many instances recently, but have been having something else off happening.

Cant quite work out how it happens and 99% certain it is after being on mumsnet.

So I dont get taken to another web site, or whole page ad, but when I close down my browser I find there is a random ad in a stand alone box open.

But as I dont know it has happened, I cant pin point what action has caused this to open.

LilyRose88 · 04/01/2025 11:25

I've been getting a virus notification continually again! 🙁

IwantToRetire · 05/01/2025 21:45

I had the strange floating box ad again to day.

Was just scrolling through notifications. Hadn't clicked on anything.

Got an error message, and sure enough there was the floating box, which I couldn't screen grab but is for something called Nero Platinum 2025.

Digital software?

But no URL so not sure how or why it appeared.

Have never had this whilst on any other web site.

Wonderknicks · 05/01/2025 21:52

I got the DDOS one today. Laptop using Edge.

Abra1t · 05/01/2025 22:01

Yup, me too, with the Edge version. Just now. I've given up using Chrome for MN. My iphone 13 Safari still works. IPad won't load MN without taking ages.

Escaperoom · 05/01/2025 22:36

I have also had this problem. It purports to be from McAfee but I am sure it is not as I don't have that installed. Again only when I am on Mumsnet but not every time, although the days it does occur it happens several times in succession. I usually just try to get rid of it by clicking on the 'x' in the corner and if that doesn't work just exit Mumsnet and log in again. Hope you manage to fix it as it is very annoying.

MissRoseDurward · 06/01/2025 18:18

Just had the fake McAfee again. I shut it down at once, didn't take time to notice any url. Windows 8.1 (I think, not using my usual device) and Edge.

bobbythejobby · 07/01/2025 08:27

I’ve also just had this. Windows 11 laptop using edge. This is the first time I’ve seen it. I done a virus scan after just in case but didn’t pick up anything. I was just scrolling through threads on active conversations at the time

bobbythejobby · 07/01/2025 08:29

When I had it it opened in a new browser page. I closed it so quickly I didn’t get a chance to get the url but looked the same as previous screenshots people have posted.

TeaandHobnobs · 07/01/2025 13:12

Happened again - this time I think directly from the Active Conversations page (not having clicked on a thread as in the past)

LilyRose88 · 07/01/2025 14:38

Just got the fake McAfee notification. It makes my screen flash too and is a bit alarming. This really does need to be fixed!

GCAcademic · 08/01/2025 11:42

I've just had this too.

WhoPutTheBomp · 08/01/2025 11:45

Same.

I have abandoned MNing on my laptop. Now on my mobile. Uch. Such a shame no one is sorting this.

TheBunyip · 08/01/2025 12:37

Getting this on my super secure laptop

GCAcademic · 08/01/2025 12:40

I was on an actual thread when it happened (but can't recall which one)

LilyRose88 · 08/01/2025 14:58

Happened again! Please fix this Mumsnet it is getting ridiculous.

StrongFemaleCharacter · 08/01/2025 15:13

Still happening here. Strangely - I have 2 laptops and it only seems to happen on one of them 👀
