Virus scam appearing only when on Mumsnet

Just wondering if anyone else has had this?
As in the title I'm getting frequent "warnings", supposedly from McAfee, claiming I've got various viruses and inviting me to click a link (not done of course)

I don't use McAfee anyway and they're not from them - their site has images of a common scam which matches these - but it only happens when I'm clicked onto Mumsnet

Anyone know what's happening by any chance?

Hi there @Puzzledandpissedoff . Could you let us know what device and browser you are using? If you're also able to send us a screenshot of the messages you're seeing, that would also be really helpful. Thank you.

It's a laptop running Chrome, @HebeMumsnet - the messages were closed (obviously!!) so I can't access them now, but will copy them over to you the next time I get one

Thanks, OP. We'll wait to hear from you (and hoping it doesn't popup again).

Morning, everyone. We're still working on this one, but thank you to everyone who has sent in info so far. The info we need at the moment is the following:

  • Device you are on
  • What page were you on?
  • Did you see an ad or click on one? If so can you share the click through URL, or give a description of the ad?

If you're seeing these pop-ups and haven't yet sent us the above info, we'd be really grateful if you could do so next time you see it. Many thanks. Flowers

Hi everyone, thanks for alerting us. We're working on this now and will be back if we need further info. As before, any info including screen grabs, where you saw it, device/browser, etc. is very helpful.

JoMumsnet · 18/12/2024 18:13

Hi all,

Thanks to everyone who's posted about these pop-ups, and for all of the screenshots.

We've been informed that this is a security issue across multiple publishers. The company's security team is on the case and working to resolve this, so we'll let you know as soon as we've had an update from them.

In the meantime we're really sorry for all the disruption this is causing.

JoMumsnet · 03/01/2025 14:52

Thanks @IwantToRetire and @Vroomfondleswaistcoat - we're taking another look into this and will be back with an update as soon as possible.

JoMumsnet · 17/01/2025 14:18

We're sorry to hear this pop up has returned for some of you.

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat are you still using Firefox / laptop? And can you please let us know which thread you were on when you saw it.

@burnoutbabe can we ask which device / browser / version of the site you're using?

Thanks in advance.

HebeMumsnet · 10/02/2025 10:31

Hi there @IwantToRetire. Thanks for letting us know about this. We've blocked several sites that were causing this problem but we've added this one to the list now, too.

JoMumsnet · 10/07/2025 13:39

Thanks, everyone. We're still trying to block all of these ads but will be back with an update as soon as we can.

JoMumsnet · 10/07/2025 14:04

In fact as this is an old thread, can we direct any new issues over to this current one - https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/site_stuff/5368896-fake-virus-page-taking-over www.mumsnet.com/talk/site_stuff/5368896-fake-virus-page-taking-over]]]]

Thank you!
