Virus scam appearing only when on Mumsnet

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/10/2024 22:05

Just wondering if anyone else has had this?
As in the title I'm getting frequent "warnings", supposedly from McAfee, claiming I've got various viruses and inviting me to click a link (not done of course)

I don't use McAfee anyway and they're not from them - their site has images of a common scam which matches these - but it only happens when I'm clicked onto Mumsnet

Anyone know what's happening by any chance?

I've switched laptops, now on the old machine running an older version of Firefox. I've installed Adblocker on both machines and this one hasn't yet done the white screen thing, although on the other machine it was every thirty seconds and I couldn't even read one entire page of a thread without it happening. Adblocker has stopped the MacAfee thing but it can't be sustainable for Mumsnet if we can all only access the site with an adblock running. Let's see if older version Firefox gets the white page of death...

TeaandHobnobs · 22/01/2025 13:24

But I can't even report my post above, because the browser is freezing and going blank every time I try! WHAT is going on???

I've done it for you TeaandHobnobs. Have now got Adblocker on and can navigate the site again

TipsyKoala · 22/01/2025 13:48

I keep getting this too. I thought I'd google it and it seems it's not only me. I get sent to a page about Avast I think but I just quickly shut it down because it looks like a malware pop up to me. I'm on a PC using chrome and it happens from clicking on links to threads, not clicking on ads.

TeaandHobnobs · 22/01/2025 13:49

Thanks @TessoftheDobermans ! 🙏
I tried switching to my Avast secure browser, but I'm still getting the site attempting to send me to these spam sites - Avast is blocking them, but it is still taking me off the MN page.

StrongFemaleCharacter · 22/01/2025 14:16

Adblocker installed. I hope it works otherwise I'm off. I can't believe @MNHQ haven't responded with an update. It's been going on for months and getting progressively worse.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 22/01/2025 14:17

Which ad blocker is the best? I'm going to put one on now too

MissConductUS · 22/01/2025 14:46

I use Ad Blocker Plus (free version) and have never had this problem on MN.

pusskins06 · 22/01/2025 15:21

Installed free adbloc yesterday and seems to be working well Pages still freeze at times but pop ups seem to have stopped

Can report no white page attempts on the old laptop running an older version of Firefox. Whereas on the newer laptop with everything up to date, Mumsnet was unusable, despite having Adblock installed.

Userccjlnhibibljn8 · 22/01/2025 15:56

Just had this while on this page - using firefox.

MN are absolutely useless Its their job to sort

Uricon2 · 22/01/2025 17:30

I've just got the blank screen 3 times in about a minute. I've tried multiple other browsers, same things are happening. This really does look like a MN issue and I'm sure for everyone of us trying to flag the problem there will be many others just logging off.

Pomsy · 22/01/2025 17:34

It's making the site almost unusable. I have both Microsoft edge and google chrome on my laptop and it happens with both of them. I have an ad blocker and virus protection. At times it happens every 2 minutes and it occurs on multi threads.

It never happens at all on any other site. Clearly other sites can protect their users from this type of scam but Mumsnet some how can't? I don't think they are taking our safety seriously.

I'm sorry if I sound arsey, its just incredibly frustrating when people have been highlighting to MNHQ for a long time and nothing improves. This thread alone was started in October.

Yes the blank screen is a new one on me today. The weird virussy pop up has been going on for months. I stopped using MN for a while and I now remember it was because of this.

venusandmars · 22/01/2025 23:50

The blank screen happens so often that the site is unusable.

@BeckyAMumsnet @HebeMumsnet @JoMumsnet @LilyMumsnet etc. This has been going on for months and us getting worse. You need to get it sorted...

IwantToRetire · 23/01/2025 01:04

Lots and lots and lots and lots x 100 blank screens today.

I dont know if the MNHQ techy has tried to come up with a program that stops links to external sites and instead you just get a blank screen.

It happens when scrolling when going to a thread you get a notification about, when trying to start of new thread, when trying to post on this thread, in fact just about all the time.

Shall be have a crowd funder for MNHQ so they can employ the most experienced IT expert ever.

Or alternativelyl go back to the version of the sotware when this wasn't happening - last summer.

That would be a mucn better use of time than adding in the cringy choice of post recognition. Who came up with that waste of time.

It doesn't happen on my old laptop, running an old version of Firefox, which is interesting.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 23/01/2025 09:06

...might be speaking too soon, but the 'blank paging' seems to have stopped - anyone else? Or at least not be the every ten seconds that it was yesterday. Back on the newer laptop running the latest version of Firefox (actually updated this morning, if that makes a difference).

Greybeardy · 23/01/2025 09:49

same...so far so good today..

CaveMum · 23/01/2025 10:33

I still get a blank screen on my HP laptop using Edge. Cant access the site at all.

Cant we get some tech lab to take this on as an interesting puzzle.

But doesn't change the fact that is seems to only happen on MN.

IwantToRetire · 24/01/2025 02:33

Hasn't been so bad for me today, well yesterday.

Has anyone had this web link come up as trying to collect data from you.

aax-eu.amazon-adsystem.com

Just wondered if this is the source of the problem

(have installed s/w that supposedly tracks intrusive web links.)

edited to add that saw this on a discussion forum:

That site is a fake Amazon website. Do not attempt to login it. Amazon would never use a hyphen in the domain.

I have only been getting it as an intrusion after being on MN

Igneococcus · 24/01/2025 07:41

It was fine yesterday, but just now had the white page issue again.
